@jiggyturbojim im just trying to understand this as an american who is interested in irish politics and history. but didnt Michael collins negotiate the country of ireland from britain?
@republicanshield An Independent Irish Republic was established by the Irish people in 1919. What Collins negotiated was the partition of Ireland and for it to remain under the British empire. His 26 county free state army was armed by the British government to enforce this in Ireland and he waged war against the IRA, who were Ireland's national state army.
Collins negotiated it, and then the Dail here in Dublin RATIFIED it in 1922, by a Democratic Vote! But some refused to accept the result of the Vote, so that led to our Civil War.
Never underestimate the power of the Irish for self-deceit & hypocrisy: we're masters of it!
He didnt wage war on his own country the rebels took over the four courts thats who started the fighting. And dont say it was because he accepted the treaty no one could of got the whole of ireland
@STARRS961 The IRA was Ireland's national army. He did wage war against the army of the Irish Republic and his own country. He shelled the four courts with British artillery and was helped by British soldiers to do it.
@TomBarry192I Micheal collins was the hero and nobody could of got the irish republic at that time, read your history,,,he did the best for ireland, its a shame that the misguided thugs under dev murdered him..
@kevj247 Nobody could have got the Irish republic at the time? If you read your own history you would know the Irish Republic was already established by the people in 1919 and British collaborator Collins waged war against its forces using weapons supplied by the Brits.
Michael Collins was a traitor - a West Brit and all who sided with Free Staters are and forever will be West Brits...the current government are Free State Bastards!
For God's sake any reasonable person who looks objectively at the treaty must concede that Collins was put in an impossible position by those who were in authority over him, notably dev. Dev was smart, if Collins came back with 32 counties deValera would share the credit, when as was expected he did not, Dev was sufficiently distanced from the treaty to oppose it. This opposition however caused more bloodshed for no gain.
@martialimapartial Thats more historical revisionism that has been handed down through the generations. Erskine Childers was also part of the team that went to London, was he put in an impossible postition? He rejected the treaty, exposed it for what it was so well that the free staters had him killed.
@TomBarry192I but childers wasnt a huge part of the delegation, whatever happened it was collins who would be held accountable, childers was the secretary of the delegation and therefore was not required to sign it so no he wasnt put in an impossible position
@TheDeserthunta He still opposed it. De Valera should have sent a better team to London. The men sent weren't up to the task and the British ran rings around them. Arthur Griffith was a complete fool and not even a legitimate Republican.
@TomBarry192I De Valera should have gone himself but he had previously failed in talks with Lloyd George and he probably knew that a 32 county republic was never achievable ( thanks to the pressure on George from James Craig and the conservatives) and so De Valera chose them. @TheDeserthunta The Irish Republic was already established in 1919. The delegations were seeking a British withdrawl not seeking permission for a Republic. Grittith was a nationalist fool not a Republican same as Mick Collins. Griffith was a monarchist when he founded Sinn Féin, before it became a Republican orginisation. When it came to being part of the British empire and swearing an oath to its King, they agreed. They were not suitable for the talks.
@TomBarry192I collins was a fool? no point trying to argue with u. clearly too stupid to listen to reason. your video is about praising collins for fuck sake
@TheDeserthunta The video is an eye witness account of some Republican prisoners showing respect for their fallen enemy, not praising him. He was a fool for waging war against his own country.
@TomBarry192I they were showing respect for their former leader and the man who made them. the IRA would not have existed without collins, he made them, he trained them and when it came down to it a few rogues decided that the man that had finally put ireland on negotiating terms with the british was wrong. he beat the british and in doing so managed to achieve peace, this peace was destroyed by the rogue IRA who plunged ireland into a civil war collins did not want.
@TheDeserthunta The 'rogue IRA' as you describe them was the national army attacked by the counter revolutionary and British backed free state army. The civil war was started by Collins using British supplied weaonry against the fourt courts HQ, not the IRA.
@TomBarry192I counter revolutionary? collins MADE the IRA collins was the leader of the IRA against the british and in doing so brought the british to their knees. when the free state army was made it was made from the IRA loyal to collins which was the majority only a few decided to break away. and how it really happened was the IRA rogues invaded the four courts and at first collins let them be trying to avoid war but then these ROGUES captured general JJ O Conner and he was forced to act.
@TheDeserthunta Collins did not 'make' the IRA. What history books have you been reading? The people who broke away from the IRA were the Free Staters, who were a 26 county army, broke their oath to defend the Republic and attacked it using British guns to bring Ireland under the British Empire. The counter revolution was replacing the 32 county Republic with two partitioned states to prevent Irish independence which goes on today. You have been watching too much Neil Jordan.

@TheDeserthunta Richard Mulcahy was the leader of the IRA during this time - Chief of Staff. Michael Collins was Director of Intelligence. The flying columns were mainly organised by Dick McKee on the GHQ staff and trained and led by local commanders who acted independently of the leadership. The IRA were the men who fought the war. Collins was too busy riding around Dublin on a bicycle to fire a single shot at the Brits.
@martialimapartial Dev was the greatest Machiavellian character that ever entered Irish politics. Dev had already had exploratary talks with Lloyd George a few weeks earlier. But no, they start a civil war, and the British laughed while the Irish turned on eachother, and Britain continues reaping the income of Northern Ireland to this day because some upstart jackasses think they know it all. If Micheal hadn't negotiated those terms, all of Ireland would still be a fucking colony right now.
@WunderDoob Collins set up a counter revolutionary army called the free state army which was armed and backed by the British government. He left the IRA and Collins started the civil war against the IRA. Collins fought to keep all of Ireland in the British empire - a colony. You have a extremely warped view of Irish history.
@WunderDoob yeah, super dumb comment, cause first of all civil war was started by this upstart collins by shelling of four courts, second if platon would be alive then he must be proud of your logic by upholding the republic by killing fellow republicans instead of fighting with them against the british
You forget the facts: the IRA was finished before the agreement. They hadn't the weapons, ammunition, or manpower to continue fighting the British. If Collins hadn't done what he did, you'd all have been rolled over by the British in less than a week. @WunderDoob what did collins used against the irregulars?an ordianary weaponry, and according to tom barry's statements 9 out of 10 in ira is against the treaty and pro treaty recruited the ex british army too, that means that anti treatiates are neither children nor handful, and never opened fire until the shelling, and what about the border campaign "lorry load of volunteers" ?
It seems to me, an Americn, that Collins DID betray Ireland. He was someone who seems to have compromised his principles at a time when if he had united with the Irish who wished to not to pledge allegiance to the kind of England, much of Ireland's sorrow would have been avoided.....
@paddycentered maybe should actually get to grips with Irish history before you go spewing that shit all over the internet... Collins did not betray Ireland... The British never intended or were able to give a full 32 county republic... mainly because of the unionist in the northern Ireland... and as an Irishman im telling you know fuck all!
@wicklowmania maybe you need to get to grips with history rather than free state revisionism. Collins was a traitor and even admitted it when he said he had just signed his own death warrant.
collins was the one who was betrayed by develera and his cronies. only an idiot would say that collins was the greatest traitor ireland has ever seen.he gave everything for ireland.in the end he gave the ultimate, my "republican" friend from your united kingdom.
Collins was a traitor, to republicans that is not to west Brit free staters for obvious reasons. He murdered republicans that is not an opinion that is fact. Revise history all you like there what ever gets you through the night won't change the FACTS.
Collins is the biggest Traitor Ireland ever seen, he turned his Guns on Republicans and murdered them, he is a disgrace to this nation and no Republican should utter his name with any kind of reverence.
the choice was get blown to pieces or get a free state and achive a republic along the way and de ve lara made him to england because he didnt want to bring home the bad news and im from northen ireland and i support michael collins a hero in my mind the real traitor is the irish goverment today
he was an irish leader, and then he returned to fight the easter rising he was irish republic first minister of home affairs, and volunteer and director of irish republican army do i need go on?
people like you are real traitors free stares, what michael collins did was right, collins and the ira are hero's and im proud that my family is related to this hero and legend god bless michael youre never forgotton
@bigdiemarty. I can only agree. An outstanding leader,Courageous, Brave and upped the ante when it was necessary (Kilmichael) . But for me the number One spot was Collins. He had the" Castle" by the Balls. And they know it to this day. Sleep well Heroes. Our Day will come. P
Its nice to see that hard line Republicans, (which I've been told my family were) had the grace and respect for Collins even tho at the time he was the "enemy". Brilliant upload my friend.
It is a shame that Ireland (well 26 Counties) threw in all away again. The Celtic Tiger, what a joke!!!!! 26 Counties, another Joke. A Bird never Flew on One Wing :) :) :)
tom said ,eamon de valera was a man he admired, even though he was jailed by him many times, sometimes he was right and sometimes he was wrong,he said.he said of michael collins should have lived, but then it was that horrible fight between brothers
Amazing...shows how loyal they actually were to him, the prisoners. Poor Mick..

The British never intended or were able to give a full 32 county republic... mainly because of the unionist in the northern Ireland... and as an Irishman im telling you know fuck all!
wicklowmania 9 months ago
