There are combinations of runes that make the sword work, kind of like a combination lock. She's naming the runes by their meanings, so the blade rune and the birth rune are supposed to be on top of each other. The other is love on death.

I know most people won't like this, but I really don't see how it could be possible for Jane to marry in that age. She's in essence the first feminist and that would come at a cost. It would be very hard to be a pregnant knight and there would be wifely responsibilities that would also compromise her knighthood. And there's the issue of status. That said, it doesn't mean she couldn't have a romantic interest.
