Thank you England for sharing the Small Faces. I never get tired of Ronnie's bass lines through this song. Playful, melodic, clever, and always amusing and charming. Perfection! Man! Steve Marriot was very talented. But talent is not enough.....you need temperament and talent. Steve, by his admission did alot of drugs and booze, and was very difficult to get on with it. I mean, Glynn Johns and Ronnie Lane couldn't stand him in the end..and they were/are probably 2 of the nicest most agreeable people in music. It's a real shame what happened to him....but ultimately he simply did not live up to his massive potential. RIP.
@xpat73 There are plenty of difficult artists out there who do tons of drugs and piss people off royally and still make it to the big time. And Steve had far more talent than the vast majority of them. I agree that he did not live up to his "potential" from a fame or money standpoint, but I really believe those things weren't very important to him and he lived - and I guess died - on his own terms. Part of me wishes he'd been far bigger than Rod Stewart. Another part is glad he didn't.
This was the first song I ever bought it was on an EP along with Tin Soldier and it is still one of my favourites today. I just heard it on a radio station and had to look it up and play it again on You Tube, just great.
It's unbelievable that Marriot never really made it......and that scumbag Don Arden ripped them off and they never made a dime. I hope Arden rots in hell.
@MyNoah23 Steve Marriott was one of the most beautiful men who ever lived. Anyone can see that but I think you must be male. ( with eyesight issues!! ) LoL
just about had the sixties, the slightly older kids had a groovy time.I remember the small faces being interviewed and saying they based the record on a park where they chilled and often got stung by wasps or nettles,,itchy...itchy cooo
@gropingwithastoker When Ronnie and Steve insulted each other in later years, they always started out with "the little......" The little bastard, the poor little sod, etc. Seeing as one was nearly as little as the other, I always found that funny.
@DAK56 Where are they now? Two are dead, and the two survivors will be on stage in Cleveland in April as the Small Faces are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Just because a band only had one hit in the United States doesn't make them one-hit wonders in other parts of the world. They were an incredibly important and influential band.
@robertemmet321 Hi, Robert: I certainly didn't mean any disrespect to the group or their hits. like you, I, too, really did enjoy their music. I was only referring to their only U.S. hit, "Itchygoopark" which I loved. I'll be happy when they're inducted into the Hall this April. I miss this music very much. Thank you for responding to my post. Cheers, David
Steve never sold out to the big business of the music industry..like a true bluesman he kept the music close to the people in taverns and pubs..RIP...
I loved this song but I did not get high. And VERY GLAD I did not! This sort of stuff is what kids who followed a crowd would listen to and mimic mindlessly. But I still lided the song. I was in 9th grade.
@outerrealm Sorry, I don't mean to question your wisdom... but, I'm from that era so that means I'm old, please bear with me.... I couldn't find the "tagged as live" part (reference, you made) help me out here, where is it?? If you mean YouTube search engine that sorts files/videos for people? I see no reference in the discription to "live", When you did your search did you type in "live"? if so, you need to get out your stick and stripe YouTube's legs for giving you a bogus video!!!
what a shame Steve and Ronnie can't be there ( Hall of Fame) to accept this honor. You know how some songs become part of you, more than just a favorite? This is such a song...
It was the phase shifting throughout the song that really was the hook for this great pop song. The Animals used this effect in Sky Pilot which was a big hit as well. The effect was created by putting your finger on the tape while playing causing a delay that we now know as phase shifting and flanging. Thank you Small Faces for a classic!
@robertemmet321 =- Well, I could never describe what category this song fell into. It's a bit psychedelic. It's a bit pop. I always considered this to be a bumblegum -It's a post-psychedelia tune from about 68 or 69. I'm in my 50's and I actually remember hearing it when it came out.
@geoffolehane It was recorded in '67 and was a part of the SF's relatively brief foray into psychedelia. It's one of the more complex songs of the era, complete with early phasing techniques and layered keyboards and percussion. Listen to the lyrics. Bridge of Sighs, dreaming spires, getting stoned. I’ll agree it’s a pop song, but it ain’t anything like Sugar, Sugar.
It cracks me up when I think about top 40 in the 60's and I was still a little kid (under 10 years old) and the drug songs that I never knew at the time were in reference to drugs. Even one as blatant as this.
I have always associated this song with tripping on acid, out in a park, it was popular when I was in high school in the late 60s and early 70s, both the song and tripping.
Where better to trip ? Out in the summer sun at your favorite park. I get a memory, head-rush, flashback-like feeling every time I hear this song played,.....smiles all around.
When this came out in 67 it was, for me, instantly linked with psychedelia and drugs and books like Go Ask Alice (which came out a few short years later). I was 10 (and not doing drugs), and I remember how adult this song felt, esp when he sings
Tell you what I'll do (what will you do?)
I'd like to go there now with you
You can miss out school (won't that be cool)
High school seemed so far away, and though I didn't understand all of the song, it mixed a sense of danger with innocence.
Check out the Grand Theft Auto V trailer, Small Faces people. It features Odgens Nut Gone Flake (the instrumental) and hundreds if not thousands of kids are asking where they can download the "new" track. Amazing.
I love this song so much. Listening to it takes me back to junior high, skating rink, holding hands, first kisses, first love....it was all too beautiful. Thank you for this song.
@stoneydog1000 I'm sure Ronnie's spirit will be there. Steve's? It will probably get lost in the Cleveland traffic. Honestly, I don't think Steve would much care about the honor while Ronnie would secretly be very chuffed. And we know Ian and Ken are happy about it. So all and all, a good thing.
@robertemmet321 It's about time! I hope that Steve M. is mentioned lovingly. Steve was (and remains) a genius! The absolutely-soulful tune, Tin Soldier, was better than this tune (my opinion, of course).
@Fredrockroll No. Both the Small Faces and the Faces are being inducted at the same time. Although I agree with you that they are totally different bands, the Hall of Fame in their infinite ignorance doesn't see it that way.
@robertemmet321 they should have been in years ago.....if only for this song! at this rate of induction...........deep purple, king crimson, ect. will be inducted in 2030!
@robertemmet321 I've read artists generally see at least a 50% bump in catalog sales after being inducted into the Hall of Fame. The Small Faces are to release a comphrehensive boxed set this year including remasters and rarities. Kenney and Mac would do well to make sure the public knows the Small Faces existed entirely apart from Rod Stewart and the Faces and that to the extent they can, that the bands are dealt with separately at induction.
@Southsideshuffler Both bands are being inducted at the same time. Crazy, I know, but Rod has the US name recognition that Steve Marriott and and the other Small Faces do not, which is why I think they are combining the two. Plus, there are three crossover personnel - Lane, Jones, and McLagan.
I always thought that Stevie Marriot looked a lot like Kate Moss's brother during his Mod years. I guess it's the incredible cheek bones! Loved him during his Humble Pies years too, "Thirty days in the hooooooooooleeee"
Is this a recent stereo mix? It sounds great on here.Where can I find this mix? I have several versions on various cds, none sound as good as this one.
@madshadows830 Some versions do sound better than others and I'm not sure where this one is from but word has it that a boxed set due out next year is going to have a killa mix.
@MrRightwingextreme I love cars from that era. Roughly 62-72, just before the gas prices and emission standards killed off some lovely American cars of the day.
@p4ul1z No. Different ballgame altogether. The Beatles were not Mods. The Beatles never had this level of energy. And they sure as hell never had a singer like Steve Marriott.
@robertemmet321 Dead right! The Beatles just never had the energy or raw intense passion that Steve Marriott had. Marriotts voice is in a class of it's own. The band as a whole far outplayed the Beatles anyday on any song due to their combined talents, energy and unique creativity.
@fluffybunny451 So true. These boys added another dimension to what the Beatles offered. Bluesy Marriott blew every singer of the era away, and the bass lines, keyboards, and drums were just as amazing. Play this tune to every kid you know. They'll be as addicted to it as we are. (the "you can miss out school" line works like a charm.)
I didn't know that Steve Marriott was dead too... It just occurred to me that most of the music I loved growing up and still listen to were recorded by people who are now dead. Is that weird? I am getting weirded out about this.
Steve & Ronnie were the SHITS in '67-'68 and it's so sad to understand how their lives ended. Ronnie Lane lived his final years just south of where I live (Pueblo) in Trinidad, Colorado while everyone knows the story of the fire that ended Steve Marriott's life. I was 20 years old in 1967 and want to thank both of these individuals for making my own personal life just a little better in the day's of my youth. R.I.P. Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane ~ we will miss you, always............
WOW! Takes me back to early spring 1968. I was a 15 year old teenager listening to WHB 71 Radio in Kansas City. "Sigh"....Wish we still had good music like this. Excellent video. Thank you for posting this.
The general Pop Scene in the 60s was pretty bad. I was a teen right through that time. Thought it was great then, but looking back it was'nt that good. This band, and some others were great, and the Era produced some of the best bands of all time. What made the 60s great was the whole experience. A nice peaceful time, lots of work, hardly any violence to speak of. And respect in general. Wish the young of today could have them times.Even the Weed was good, not like the crap ( skunk ) of today.
@mr1168726 I'd take the 60's scene over this scene anytime! I was a teenager in the mid 90's so I was 10 years old when the likes of Blur, Oasis, Radiohead, Supergrass, Ocena Colour Scene were ruling... The 90's is by far the best decade for me... You had all the groups mentioned above along with the likes of Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine, The Stone Roses, Fugees, Nas, 2Pac, Seal, The Prodigy... Whatever music each individual was into, the 90's had it and it hasn't been matched since!
@SuperhelterYNWA As I said, it was'nt just the music that gave the 60s meaning, it was the whole scene. A lovely time to be young.Everyones teen years were the best, goes without saying, dont it? There has been LOADS of talent since my teen years Remember though, we had, Dylan, Hendrix, Floyd, Original Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Beatles, Stones, just to name a few. Loads more if you want. The general "pop" was crap. I would'nt want to be young these days. A horrible, violent time to be young.
@mr1168726 After I posted this I did think of alt 60's and that is truly untouchable! All of the names you mentioned along with The Doors, The Who, Zep (early) The Byrds, Pretty Things, Velvet Underground... You really could go on! 90's mainstream was great but the greatest era was definitely the 60's
@mr1168726 i wasnt born till the early 70s but i agree the late 60s era woulda been fkn awesome to part of,my fave song ever is a 60s classic by gary puckett and the union gap, everytime a hear it it takes me back to childhood and growin up listnin to my parents music and yeah my3 fave bands are the doors led zep and fleetwood mac
@MrRoadhouse1974 Alo Mate, If you like "the Mac", not the later line up, but the original, then treat yourself to Peter Green & Rory Gallagher, doing "leaving Town Blues". Should ( hopefully) take your head off. It's amazing. Met "Greeny" a coupla months ago in a music shop in Essex. Real Privilege. I used to go see The Mac regular in the early 60s. Check out Rory as well, he's great, one of the best ever. Was "Young Girl" the song you mentioned? A truly great Era Eh?
I can picture it now...on acid & chasing one another around & it was all too beautiful. Freek lived a few houses down from the park & wore his jammies & top hat sometimes. The song was a trip, the times were a trip. It couldn't happen now, kids have little innocence left in them having had to be warned about all the bad people. So sad the children must grow up so quickly.
Oh yes, the FLANGER effect, sometimes called a 'phase shifter'. Very psychadelic, one of the precursors to 'Acid Rock'. I also like 'Pictures Of Matchstick Men' by 'Status Quo'. It gives you the same feeling, check it out!
Ok...stuck again...18 times today....grrrr...can't let it go! Looks like my first drum set. Drove myself crazy playing it over and over back then...here we go again!
Incredible Leslie speaker! Never heard such good use since then.
Steve came from Manor Park East London and I believe he wrote the song about Little Ilford Park where the local kids would hang out.Its interesting that he sings about it being all too beautiful because too my memory it was a dump but there you are and iy hardly matters because its a great song
@dand666 Didn't know that thanks for the info. Ronnie was an east lad as well i think, as was Kenny, it was just Ian McLagan that came from Hounslow in West London. Steve lived in Alverstone Avenue Manor Park a a kid, which joins Little Ilford Park
Over bridge of sighs To rest my eyes in shades of green Under dreamin' spires To Itchycoo Park, that's where I've been What did you do there? I got high What did you feel there? Well I cried But why the tears there? I'll tell you why It's all too beautiful It's all too beautiful It's all too beautiful It's all too beautiful I feel inclined to blow my mind Get hung up feed the ducks with a bun They all come out to groove about Be niceand have fun in the sun
@GhilleSasanach Hi, thanks for putting the lines of this great song, and there was no one quite like the Small Faces especially Steve Marriot who I do miss very much as well as the lovely Ronnie Lane, to them both R.I.P.
Just wish to add I never realised in this song the words "Get hung up feed the ducks with a bun" Amazing ;) x

@yonderdon1 The person was referring to the 67 who down-voted this I believe, not people alive in 1967. People are as ugly or as beautiful as they were then. Genetics and all.

@Fredrockroll No. Both the Small Faces and the Faces are being inducted at the same time. Although I agree with you that they are totally different bands, the Hall of Fame in their infinite ignorance doesn't see it that way.
gropingwithastoker 1 month ago 5
@gropingwithastoker Stupid morons. But both bands deserve it.
Fredrockroll 1 month ago
@robertemmet321 they should have been in years ago.....if only for this song! at this rate of induction...........deep purple, king crimson, ect. will be inducted in 2030!
coreyagraph 1 month ago
@robertemmet321 I've read artists generally see at least a 50% bump in catalog sales after being inducted into the Hall of Fame. The Small Faces are to release a comphrehensive boxed set this year including remasters and rarities. Kenney and Mac would do well to make sure the public knows the Small Faces existed entirely apart from Rod Stewart and the Faces and that to the extent they can, that the bands are dealt with separately at induction.
gropingwithastoker 3 weeks ago 3
A great song from 68
1hoffinator 1 week ago
@robertemmet321 I wouldn't think Rod would be included as it is Small Faces and not its successor Faces which is being inducted.
Southsideshuffler 1 week ago
@Southsideshuffler Both bands are being inducted at the same time. Crazy, I know, but Rod has the US name recognition that Steve Marriott and and the other Small Faces do not, which is why I think they are combining the two. Plus, there are three crossover personnel - Lane, Jones, and McLagan.
robertemmet321 1 week ago
@robertemmet321 Well I guess there is a chance that rod will be gracious.
I repect him for being a smart entertainer and businessman even if though his "I know I'm losing you" personna which I loved is long gone!

@madshadows830 Some versions do sound better than others and I'm not sure where this one is from but word has it that a boxed set due out next year is going to have a killa mix.

The GTO was a 1965 I bought in 1967. I loved those years ( except the servise)

@MrRightwingextreme I love cars from that era. Roughly 62-72, just before the gas prices and emission standards killed off some lovely American cars of the day.

I love the Beatles.so go fuck yer self...
doowaditti 1 month ago
@p4ul1z No. Different ballgame altogether. The Beatles were not Mods. The Beatles never had this level of energy. And they sure as hell never had a singer like Steve Marriott.
robertemmet321 1 month ago
@robertemmet321 Dead right! The Beatles just never had the energy or raw intense passion that Steve Marriott had. Marriotts voice is in a class of it's own. The band as a whole far outplayed the Beatles anyday on any song due to their combined talents, energy and unique creativity.
fluffybunny451 1 month ago
@fluffybunny451 So true. These boys added another dimension to what the Beatles offered. Bluesy Marriott blew every singer of the era away, and the bass lines, keyboards, and drums were just as amazing. Play this tune to every kid you know. They'll be as addicted to it as we are. (the "you can miss out school" line works like a charm.)

Wish the young of today could have them times.Even the Weed was good, not like the crap ( skunk ) of today.
mr1168726 2 months ago
@mr1168726 I'd take the 60's scene over this scene anytime! I was a teenager in the mid 90's so I was 10 years old when the likes of Blur, Oasis, Radiohead, Supergrass, Ocena Colour Scene were ruling... The 90's is by far the best decade for me... You had all the groups mentioned above along with the likes of Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine, The Stone Roses, Fugees, Nas, 2Pac, Seal, The Prodigy... Whatever music each individual was into, the 90's had it and it hasn't been matched since!
SuperhelterYNWA 2 months ago
@SuperhelterYNWA As I said, it was'nt just the music that gave the 60s meaning, it was the whole scene. A lovely time to be young.Everyones teen years were the best, goes without saying, dont it? There has been LOADS of talent since my teen years Remember though, we had, Dylan, Hendrix, Floyd, Original Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Beatles, Stones, just to name a few. Loads more if you want. The general "pop" was crap. I would'nt want to be young these days. A horrible, violent time to be young.
mr1168726 1 month ago
@mr1168726 After I posted this I did think of alt 60's and that is truly untouchable! All of the names you mentioned along with The Doors, The Who, Zep (early) The Byrds, Pretty Things, Velvet Underground... You really could go on! 90's mainstream was great but the greatest era was definitely the 60's

@yonderdon1 The person was referring to the 67 who down-voted this I believe, not people alive in 1967. People are as ugly or as beautiful as they were then. Genetics and all.
