this comment is for shoopdawhooperful. Yes u can light other things than vaseline coated cotton balls. Birch bark burns great so does the fluffy stuffing in cattails found near water among many many other natural things. Key is finding dry tinder and the right kinds. The vid may not be the best but these firesteels among other brands can be real life savers if ever in trouble or lost.
i live in miami florida, do u guys know were i can buy one like at a store? cause i dont want to buy one online. please help me out!! i really want one!
Nice tip on not scraping the whole rod . They will break with heavy use if you do., Matches and lighters are easier to damage and will stop working WAY before a fire steel! I never enter the forest without a firesteel , blade , metal cup , poncho and some 550. So light and easy . These light my fire .. Gizmos are a sure bet!
you do realize that your not supposed to shave any of those off. those just create a spark, they don't actually burn in a fire (at least not the way you need), when you shave off some it you are using magnesium, you have a ferrocerium rod, what you have is just meant to throw a shower of sparks, not to burn. when you shave if off you are just wasting it, magnesium is a very soft, very burnable metal, it looks similar to lead. it usually comes in blocks about the size of your thumb.
For once a video that shows a firesteel or magnesium starter that isnt a 10 year old kid burning things that they shouldnt and not using it properly AND not using a good camera and you are none of that so great video
what a waste..just buy 10 cent matches.. i can get instant fire... put in plastics bag water proof...for my survival in the jungle..heheheh. survival doesn't mean u need to use primitive stuff...
I have the same one except it's orange instead of yellow I also bought the army fire steel I camp aaaalot during the summer and I love the fire steel. It doesn't hurt to have a few of them handy.
@ATF6281914 thanks...... nope don't plan on many fires, but just like you I feel that I have to have one... not sure on what model but every one seems to recomend the one you use.....thanks a gain.. merry x=mass.
This is certainly a good tool to have. What about storing it? If you keep it in your pocket or the trunk of your car with the ends uncovered, is it possible that friction caused by movement could cause a spark and possibly start a fire?
LMF sucks no offence it is better than nothing but the steel is small and the striker is crappy somthing like the blast match or misch metal is a lot better avalible from going gear.
@matteg02 yes, sweden rocks. we got some awesome survival knifes called Fällkniven here in sweden two. Nutnfancy have done a review on the Fällkniven a1 and a2. =)

The point of using a fire steal is so it even works when wet and if u had common sence you would take more thin one fire starter

You know that the coating is just a safety veneer coating? It's not what starts the fire. The silver metal underneath is the crucial part...

@nasadll Yeah you are right, I have matches with me too but when they get whet in anyway you're fucked.
So It's easy to attach the firesteel onto your sheath of your knife cause it always works.

You won't need the Army model unless you really think you're gonna be starting that many fires.

@dcavalli9
I highly doubt that could happen. It takes quite some force to get any kind of spark.
