  • goddamn I love this art work!

  • @Ghaiyst I mean why did you subscribe to my channel check it out in a while and thanks

  • @geishagurl84 I subscribe to anyone that catches my interest. I find interest who likes to analyze stuff I like too. I mean I find an interest in a lot of things, but I sure as hell am not interested in anything lustful. So, I mean if there's like someone hoeing them self on youtube, I don't subscribe to them. I mean this in everyway possible such as doing random dances, idk there's different criteria in my mind to judge that which I cant list on the top of my head, but you seem interesting.

  • This song reminds me of the book The Catcher In the Rye. Anyone else see that connection? But its very beautiful. Ivory lines lead suggest undergarments, yes but i started to think it might mean ropes or sticks or something used to control this girls mind, to lead it away from what her heart is really thinking.

  • @geishagurl84 I think it pretty much means what it says. Don't base decision on instincts, but rather decide base on what is best for you. I see this instinctual thought processing happen everywhere which leads to total disorder for someone's life. Someone who thinks this way are real big party goers and do random stuff and have no real morals. I noticed in the song he mentions about a tear in the fabric of a dress, which suggests someone is dressing up like a slut or a whore or somebigpartygoer

  • @Ghaiyst such that the tear refers to the skin you can see; the explicit way the woman dresses to the point where it's skimpy and you could see like their ass or tits basically.

  • If I had a soul, this song would touch it :)

  • @1idkmybffjill1 you do have a soul :]

  • why cant i find the original transatlantisism on here any more :(

also, ben gibbards voice cuts into my soul :)

  • 18 dislikes=0 hearts beating

  • This song is fairly obvious when it talks about ivory lines (bra/panties and just general undergarments). The entire song is about lust and fighting natural instincts. There's also a philosophical book called The Unbearable Lightness of Being, which Gibbard could have very well written this song about, in which case the main character is a womanizer who battles with the philosophical concepts of lightness and heaviness in life. Lightness = decisions being definite and only meaningful at one time

  • Death Cab, Is Simply Amazing. Just the sound...Glad I found the band, and wish they were more well known. They have the talent to broaden minds...

  • one of the best bands to listen to.. ALONE.

  • @sr52712 or with friends... lol...

  • Such a beautiful song

  • what does this song mean?

  • Comment removed

  • I always thought it said, "Ivory minds bleed" and I liked that imagery much better. The milky white of ivory and the scarlet red of blood (in a metaphorical sense of course). Sad day..

  • I love death cab, and this song, but do they say ivory minds lead??? If so isn't that a touch racist... Just sayin...

  • @sunchickyable I don't think Death Cab is racist and I don't quite see how that line is racist in the first place

  • @sunchickyable How.. Is that.. In any way racist? xD I think you have to redefine the word in your head, broski.

  • @sunchickyable umm...it's ivory lines lead...not minds.

  • this vid was uploaded the day i turned 14 o:

  • These guys are the modern Beatles.

  • @lesbiansexinthecity interesting never thought about it that way :p

  • I love this song!! makes me feel like a mellow marshmellow. :)

  • @roxeegee I assumed he was talking about her bra strap ;) but maybe you're right?

  • sohpmore year, i had moved away from my best friend, she got me through all the time i was there in foster care, she meant everything 2 me, that year she invited me 2 homecoming, an so we both went, we were the sideliners lol, til some other friends told us to atleast slow dance, we both didnt want to cause we thought id be weird, but we did anyway just for the hell of it, THIS song played, and it was perfect, it was magical in a way that now i regret forever now letting her go. . good memories.

  • Can you post the song Transatlanticism? It was taken down and I have been wanting to hear it again.

  • @TruZer0 How about you buy an album? It's an fucking awesome album at that.

  • @TruZer0 Try playlist dot com, that's where I've been listening to it.

  • lyrical god.

  • buy a walkman player and put death cab's songs into. Im pretty sure you will feel that any death cab's songs reach the core of you.

  • @Michirukov hey me too :3

i still dream at my celing all day sometimes. i don't like the new DCFC stuff but this old stuff is just great.

  • Love this band.

  • beautiful...

  • reminds me of holidays. I love love love death cab.

  • i love this song but i seriously can't stand the high pitched sound in the background... kinda ruins the song for me :(

  • @TheillMadeKnght Check out the Acoustic version of this song.

  • I really dig this album.

  • what is this sound?............. woo hooo

  • Simply...odd. Yet beautiful.. makes the mind yet attractive to the ear. Curiosity kills the life.

  • Does Death Cab For Cutie not craft the best melodies, lyrics, and vocals of any indie band you've ever heard? It just all comes together to create subtle yet powerful tunes like this. I'm always in awe everytime I listen to them, because the lyrics mean something to me and the melodies carry me through my emotions and the vocals are so comforting as I'm going through this journey :) DCFC <3

  • reminds me of brooding over this one girl. feels like im covered in heavy spaghetti.

    goddamn you ben gibbard

  • Ben Gibbard and Steve Wilson are my favourite lyricists and singers.

  • I played this song and my cat started purring from across the room. Huh.

  • I think life makes more sense when you're not thinking about it.

  • @JasonTchavarria true that

  • there still the postal service, no matter what :)

  • I heard this song yesterday for the first time in my life. but still, it feels like I have always known it ...So intense.

  • MIRA!!!!!!!!!

  • Does anyone else feel like they're floating when they listen to this song with in ear earphones laying down?

  • @TheAngelsDecay indeed ...

  • @TheAngelsDecay Yeah, I feel like this song is the soundtrack for my orientation into Heaven.

  • @TheAngelsDecay that's because you're high and laying down

  • this song makes my heart heavey

  • this song is awesome to drive around on a cold weather.whoa oh.

  • Love this soo much.

  • 17 people think Justin Bieber is talented.

  • that guitar is like silk. <3

  • "You shouldn't think what you're feeling." Ever

  • Comment removed

  • I've been listening to this song a loop for the past 20 minutes.

  • "instincts are misleading

You shouldn't think what you're feeling

    They don't tell you what

    You know you should want"

<3 made SO much sense to me. i love when a bit of a song just strikes you so personally.

  • excellent! :D

  • @singertina *there*. yep.

  • Genius band.. best kind of music out their.

  • I totally thought this was The Postal Service when I heard it somewhere else.

  • Death Cab for cutie is a hit and miss band for me.

  • I really like the lyrics and the style of this song. :) Its really nice and serene (sp?). And Lyrically speaking i can compare the writing style to that of the lead singer of Say Anything. (Max i think is his name?) and the song Woe (acoustic), i recommend it. its good. :)

  • i realize whenever i listen to death cab that i should slow down, take time for myself, and really study and understand everything thats going on. i'm not sure why. also, it makes me think of comparisons more. haha(: i love this song.

  • "Your brain is the dam, I am the fish, I can't reach the core." Genius.

  • @mrsmartin01 i dont quite understand the meaning of that lyric. can you enlighten me?

  • @Rosariogalio you should come up with your own conclusion, even if it sounds funny. that's the beauty of lyrics and metaphors, you can draw from it whatever you need depending on your mood.

  • @Rosariogalio "Your heart is a river that flows from your chest through every organ. Your brain is the dam ,And i am the fish who can't reach the core." later in the song "you shouldn't think what you're feeling"

It seems like he's in love with a girl. He wants to get to her heart/the core (wants her to love him back) but her head is getting in the way. If she just went with her emotions and how she truly felt, then she would love him, but she's constantly over thinking the circumstances

  • @TheillMadeKnght thanks that actually makes great sense. good lyrics

  • @mrsmartin01 wow, at the exact moment he sang that line i started reading this comment. freaky shit man. lol.

  • @mrsmartin01 You're retarded. It goes like this

"Your heart is a river that flows from your chest

    Through every organ

    Your brain is the dam

And i am the fish who can't reach the core."

  • @TheAnonigirl that's basically identical to what he wrote, except for about two unimportant words. don't be a dick....

  • @geoffwoade That's what I was gonna reply lol.

  • Transatlanticism

  • Your heart is a river that flows from your chest through every organ, your brain is the dam and i am the fish who can't reach the core. :) so beautiful!

  • what album is this?

  • @greenbean22i This is from Transatlanticism. One of my favorites from them. :)

  • @AndrewVaz89 yh, kinda figured that out now......thanx anyways =)

soz im so dumb...i mean it even ses in the pic lol

  • @greenbean22i haha. It's all good. Easy to miss cause most people won't sit and stare at the album art.

  • @AndrewVaz89 spose =)

    but still it's kinda obvious.

  • @AndrewVaz89 The person who introduced me to this band is called Andrew Vaz and you just so happen to not be him. Wow this world is interesting..

  • death cab makes me feel warmhearted

  • Ben Gibbard saved my life..

  • there is a tear in the fabric of your favourite dress

  • Listening to this song in the earlier today and I actually heard morning doves outside :)

  • hes certainly not a lyrical genius, the lyrics are really good ill agree with that, talking about what you feel isn't genius.

  • @lamaluhvr16 I would love to read some lyrics that you have written that you feel are superior or more complex than any Postal Service song or Death

    Cab For Cutie.

  • @minamu8 So true

  • Death Cab For Cutie are musical geniuses. Their music is amazing, and their songs always have great beats.

  • crazy good! lyrical genious one of the best along with andrew mcmahon from jacks mannequin both amazing

  • Beautiful

  • Ben is also in Dntel - great music too.

  • @TammyZ87 Whoah. Tha'ts something I didn't know.

  • @TammyZ87 nope Dntel is just jimmy tamborello.

  • .... Wow I cant believe I just read that, its the same singer

  • the singer sound just like the singer from the postal service

  • thats because it is.

  • @123654171 It's the same singer. Ben Gibbard.

  • oh wow i didn't know that haha

  • @123654171

he IS the singer from the postal service.

    Ben Gibbard

  • @123654171 same person lol

  • the singer of postal service is the singer of death cab for cutie

  • i think it's about love. and pain. and cocaine.

  • the "your heart is a rivier..." part. i think that translates to. you think to much to just feel. he says that "your heart is a river" but "your brain is the dam". he also says "i am the fish who cant reach the core". something she's thinking about is preventing him from winning her heart. this also ties into the "you shouldn't think what your feeling..." line

  • And as for the chorus... Ivory Lines Lead Oo wha-ho, oo wha-ho.... symbolizes innocents and purity of a decision involving romantic relationships...

  • let me put my 2 cents in....

I think the entirety of the meaning of the song is a metaphor for someone whether it be a boyfriend or a girlfriend, figuring out (which explains the first part of the song) that they aren't good enough for the person they are interested in or in involved in (Which explains the second part of the song). And as for the final part of the song, I think it explains that impulsive decision making about getting into a relationship is not ideal... anyways DCFC is gold!

  • i totally agree...

finally someone that has a logical opinion about the meaning of the WHOLE song...

death cab for cutie is my life's soundtrack... ^_^

  • Eerie, beautiful song.

  • interesting...

  • AMAZING

  • beautiful, truly beautiful..

  • their songs give chills

  • most of their songs bring tears to mi eyes.....each one has an incredible meaning to it!

  • I did a nice little video to this song - an idea I had with after effects - duality.

  • This reminds me, does anyone else here background music/noise at the end of some of their songs?

I think at the end of The New Year, it's like there's drums in another room or something.

  • hay jjbozjet i was wondering the same thing when i thought ether a swingset or it sounds like a owl.

  • This is a very uplifting song :) I listen to it when im kinda bleh.

  • what is making that whistling noise???? i know i have heard it before, but i can't remember what it was.

  • a crow

  • Swing set?

  • yes it is either that or a wooden whistle

  • @jjbozjet ...a whistle

  • i really like them, but alot of there songs sound very similar..... anyone else agree?

  • kinda. but there old songs are majestic

  • this song makes me sad =( every time I listen to Death cab i can't keep myself from thinkin... but I really love them =)

  • Death Cab is simply the most expressive group ever. Ben Gibbard is truly a lyrical genius, never has there been one so intuned to the subtleties of our emotional existence.

  • wow that was really well thought out

  • eh, death cab is my favorite band, but i wouldn't go that far, he is a lyrical genius yes, but i think he is as lost in human emotion as the rest of us who revel in it, some of the most incredible artists are the ones who dont understand themselves

  • it was a mere compliment to be appreciated for what it is...in no way do i think he's not "lost" in his emotions...i simply stated that he has knack for expressing his and others emotions with wit and foresight(which does require one to be in tuned with their emotional subtelties) and p.s.-very few if anyone ever truly understand themselves or the world around them...and next time try comprehending one's comment before replying to it

  • hella dumb. yo brosis, "never has there been one so intuned to the subtleties of our emotional existence." ...come on now. that's kind of a ridiculous thing to say. if you had said "he has a knack for expressing his and others emotions with wit and foresight" we wouldn't disagree but you didn't. so comprehend yourself!! HA. pownt.

P.S. the most well known people are rarely the very best at what they do. im sure there are highschool students more intune than the death cab lyricist.

  • @flom54321

Wait, so because s/he said it in bigger and fewer words, we can't understand?

Maybe you can't get it without translation, but don't assume we can't.

S/He used beautiful language to describe a beautiful song. This is YouTube, we do NOT need more dumbing down.

  • that's not what im saying at all. wtf?

read the posts im refering to, then go back and read my post. then you'll understand.

    @Adiraha

    @blunger1516

  • That's funny, because your comment is nestled under theirs like a reply.

You even quote the post with the words, and make a comment on it.

What are you doing, then? You say "this and this" is ridiculous and then you 'rephrase' it.

    You even said 'hella dumb'!

And the you make a comment/PS, which I did not respond to.

If that's not what you're going on about, then please tell me.

  • now i get it thanks.. retard. art is human emotion and if you dont have it in music its literal, and then you get nickleback. just enjoy them and dont try to phsyco analyze anybody

  • @blunger1516 wow, man. that's a great way to put it. i really think that fact that he's so lost in our emotional existance that it is what makes him so brilliant. Almost as he's so lost that he's almost at the point to where he does understand what it means to be lost.

And i agree, some of the most brill minds don't even understand themselves. =]

  • @blunger1516 dumb

  • @blunger1516 I agree, take Elliott Smith for an example. An incredibly influencial and life changing songwriter but... well you know what happened =(

  • Adiraha you should listen to Counting Crows, they are just as good as DeathCab in my opinion, and trust me, i have pretty high standards to Death cab. Counting crows makes it!! lol

  • @Adiraha I agree, Ben Gibbard along with Elliott Smith remain some of my most favorite modern lyricists.

  • @Adiraha If you like this, than you should try out Owen, and American football - Never meant. You won't be disappointed :).

  • @Adiraha

I think it depends on who you are ^_^

lets say there diffrent groups of people who have diffrent emotional sets, this might click for group A while anouther band, say Linkin Park might click for group B and so on ^_^

I do like this band but the band that I can relate with most has to be Linkin Park :D

  • @Adiraha hmmm you forgot about mike skinner from the streets! but Ben is also damn fantastic!

  • @Adiraha if you like their lyrics.. go listen to The Spill Canvas

  • @Adiraha brian molko of Placebo.

  • @Adiraha Bob Dylan.

  • @Adiraha please shut up

  • One of my favorite albums of all time ;)

  • currently my favorite song by DCFC, and this album will ALWAYS be my favorite.

  • Death Cab is one of my all time favourite bands and I adore this song

  • yeah this one is by far one of my faves as well. ^-^
