Too bad we can't see the part where Marceau makes his obscene joke about "Jacko raping little boys". You should see how the old man moves his arms and pelvis, pretty INTENSE !!
The moonwalk or the backslide has been around since the early 20th century. Bill Robinson, Bill Bailey, Buck & Bubbles, Earl "Snakehip" Hines, Cab Calloway & many others were doing this move long before Marceau. There was even a dance in 50s called the slop which incorporated a backslide.
Thee are videos of them on YouTube. Especially check out Earl "Snakehips" Hines, he does early poppin & locking style. They all go back to vaudeville days. In Black America dance styles are constantly being resurrected and renamed.
the so called "moon walk" is a miming technique(impulse march), not a dance move , implemented looong before the fifties, obviously Marceau didn't invent it, but he was a master at it
He made his character more real. "Michael Jackson-real" (That could explain the white make-up) At the end of the day, no matter who gets the credits, like Claraserenaaa says here: MJ did what he professed "Get inspired by the greatest to become the greatest" (sorry, I don't know the exact quote).
It doesn't matter (at least to me) where MJ got his inspiration from. Probably all of them... and more we'll never know about. The interesting part (for me) is that, when people saw Marceau do that, they were in awe ; but for many people , mimes are kind of annoying and have a limited audience. Michael carried the art on to his and the next generations (3 at least). When people saw MJ do his thing, they also were in awe but they (many of them) were inspired to learn to do it too.
Hmmm... I've heard, that Michael was trained by Marceau (he was the greates mime in history, wasn't he?) and learned the Moon Walk from him??... Well not only learned but payed a lot of money to get lessons.. Does anyone know about that? I still think no one does a better job with dancing and performing than Michael Jackson did!! R.I.P., Master.
No no, Here, Marcel Marceau says that Michael admired him since he was a little boy, and Marceau had a huge infulence on him, and he says he's proud to know that an artist as Michael admired him a lot, I don't think he would speak about him this way if Michael payed a lot of monet to get lessons ...
Michael Jackson did not learn the Moonwalk from Marcel people. Jeffrey Daniels from the group Shalamar taught Michael how to do the dance (which is actually called the backslide). In fact Jeffrey Daniels taught Michael a lot of moves. And Michael's biggest influence of all time: James Brown, godfather of soul. Please get the facts straight.
He did not get it from Marcel or inspiration from him. He got it from Jeffrey Daniels who picked the dance up from kids on the street. Give credit where credit is due. The only thing he learned from Marcel is the miming moves.
"Michael Jackson could have been a great mime. We can see when we watch him that miming is both something that has influenced him and something he craves for.
I remember a scene in one of his video clips, in which he is with two black gangsters in the street, and there's violence, and at one point, he walks towards one of the guys and he makes that very simple gesture with his hand to tell him to go away, and the gangster leaves with a somersault."
"But it is as if Michael's gesture was really responsible for the energy that made the gangster leap in the air. In that gesture, we could witness at the same time a very ferocious casualness, so to speak, and an incredible calm ; and I thought : what a great way of using a dramatic twist."
people are made a fool, they appreciate and praises good works when the subject is dead.why do they gave bias criticsms and unjust when MJ faced the saddest part of his life.hope we could learn lessons from it.gud day!
I totally agree..bbut thas how it is...people become a legend after death...
but I wish MJ would have been able to see how much positivie attention he is getting now..if only he could`ve been able to see it..for only 5 minutes...it would cure lot of wounds and scars people marked him with...I`m so amazingly sad :`(
Can someone please translate what she says please and also what Marcel also says please especially when he mentions Michael Jackson. Do you know if Marcel taught MJ the moonwalk?
The girl : "Look for the error... There's no one. Michael Jackson, who has been a great admirer of Marceau since his childhood, took a leaf out of him for his choregraphies. A relationship Marceau is proud of."
Then, I can't translate everything (it would be too long), but Marceau says he remembers a scene : there were black dancers in a street. MJ had a hat and walked (0:45) and a dancer was just in front of him. He just did one gesture (0:53) and the dancer made a somersault.
Oh yes, and at that moment, Marceau thought it had been
calm and fierce at the same time, and he said "He (MJ) used a kind of dramatic intensity very well"
December 1995 : MJ and Marceau met each other, and MJ suggested they could make a show together, but as he had health problems, the project was cancelled.
That's all!!
And to answer your question, MJ incorporated some Marceau's gestures in his choregraphies. And he invented the moonwalk thanks to black child dancers all around the world.
yes, Marcel taught MJ the moonwalk ! they were friends
JerryFWI said that Marcel Marceau was great and MJ was his pupil in moonwalking. Jerry invites to see Marceau's vidéos "le coup de l'escalier" (in the stairs) and "the robot dance"
she says: spot the mistake, there is not. Micheal Jackson, great fan of Marceau since his childhood ,was inspired by him for his choregraphy. Marceau is proud of it
Marceau says: there was a really beautiful scene done by MJ, who could have been a mime because he's under the influence of the mime and he's looking for it.
There was a moment with black dancers, in the street, where it's violent, and he had his hat like this and he was walking like this...
...and there was a black dancer in front of him and he just did this gesture... and black dancer leaves with a somersault. But in fact it was him (MJ) who did it, so there was a trick casually and amazingly ferocious but calm at the same time. And I thaught: "now he's using a ... ressort dramatique ... in a really good way"
She says: december 95, bip meeting bamby. Jackson thinked about a duo but he had health problem and the project was postponed. Micheal's tribute stays an incredible advertisement for Marcel Marceau...
DONE... and sorry about the ressort dramatique thing.
