You can't beat this. I've listened to all the greats and not so great singing this aria. and then this, in a class all by herself. The equivalent to Callas' Tosca. There are all the Toscas and then there is the Callas Tosca. Not one Sop has even attempted to sing the forte and the pianissimo in one breath. Truly mystifying.
@divaphoenix ... è vero sono gusti. In questo caso però vi sono anche dato oggettivi sulla qualità della voce: se avremo occasione ne parleremo. A presto!
my being vibrates. even through this recording, her warm voice is soothing my own throat like honey.. how beautiful it is when gifts like that are shared!
i agree with huge gusto to the poster's surprise that this stunning interpretation isn't more famous. i was knocked onto the floor in tears 20 years ago, and i still haven't heard anyone else just casually decide not to take a breathe in between those 2 long, high, difficult phrases. that is just the epitome of bel canto "beautiful singing" . !! she also hammers the infamous "italian songs and arias" btw
@davinapons I agree. Montserrat is the one singer that can get me crying from the pure beauty of her voice. I know something is wonderful when I cry and I cry every time I hear this.
Just amazing... in my opinion this is the best rendition of this aria. The way she sings ah mio sogno, and ah mia vita at 1:46 .... divine. The legato line.... the killer high notes sung pianissimo like that. She had an incredible technique coupled with grand emotional capaibilites... brava
Che bella voce! In general,Caballe is not one of my favorite sopranos but there are few singers who sang such sweet, floating pianissimi as Caballe. She sounds wonderful here.Grazie mille for posting this piece.

As a dramatic coloratura myself, this is by far the highest a person can achieve with this aria. She is truly the best!

I can hear the smile in her voice. She is not just singing this song, she is feeling it.

There are a lot of great recordings of this aria, but I think Caballe owns this one. None of us other divas can compare Im afraid.

I agree, none of the other singers can float that high phrase the way she does, true sweetness.
