  • "But when I am alone in the halflight of the canyon..........I am haunted by waters." There is nothing like Nature to remind us of what we have, and what we have lost. Maclean's words of reverie and loss are heartbreakingly beautiful. And Redford captured it perfectly. Thank you so much for posting.

  • I will not die. It is the world that will end. -Aristotle.

  • Arnold Richardson, the man who played the elderly Norman Maclean in the movie died on Dec. 6th, 2010.

  • Dammnnnn!!!!!!!!! This ending is "DEEP" I´m a grown man, and wow this touches your soul and brings tears to your eyes....

  • I sit through this entire movie for these final words

    "I am haunted by waters"

  • Great movie, reminds me of my Dad and all the other old boys we used to fish with BC Kootenays over 40 years ago. Sure isn't the same today. I know what the words really mean.

  • I have watched this movie atleast 3 times in my life and had written two essays on this movie and I look back at it ten years later and do not understand this movie ending..all i remember from the movie was brad pitts charater was making a mess of his life and his brother was heartbroken to see it. can someone give me the message of this movie. i read one of my essays from ten years ago and that only confused me .

  • Eventually,

    all things merge into one...

and a river runs through it......

  • Longing for a "better life", we fail to recognize or appreciate the good things happening in our lives now. Its only later, realizing our imaginary "perfect life" recedes from us faster than we can chase it, that we understand how precious moments were, and long for them. "So we beat on, boats against the current, born back ceaselessly into the past".

  • Watched this lastnight wanted so bad to go fly fishing, thanks for posting

  • The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops, under the rocks are the words. And some of the words are thiers.

I just love those lines, this movie is one of my favorites.

  • It's hard to think of a pasaage in any book that is more evocative and more moving than the one read at the end of this film.

  • omg i just watched it. didnt expect such a sad end

  • perfection.

  • as an okie who has just moved to sinclair wyoming, i have a small house on the North Platte River......I can so relate to this movie, or at least the sentiments.... "Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it."

  • Best movie I ever saw!

  • I read all these comments... and it touched my heart. We have all experienced pain and loss, I for one wish all of you joy and peace. I know life is an unexpected gift, but with those memories, comes death and sadness. As you get older those memories fade. But, for all of us our childhood is the formative base for all of our motivations and set backs. I wish all a good night and hope for a new morning for recompense and redemption. We all have words, time, and dreams to fulfill! God Bless!!

  • A world that is lost in time 4 all of us Sad really is'nt it!

  • Brad Pitt is a great actor... He plays a great part in this movie and plays a great piker in snatch...

  • The older man is actually Normal himself.

  • @JackLivesTogether No it's not him. Norman Mclean died in 1990.

  • Based on a true story these are my distant relatives, I know most of the story..people who like this movie asked to put it on and then I usually ruin it because I know the story different then Hollywood version in some points.

  • This move stands the test of time ... my all-time favorite movie then AND NOW!!

  • 1:52.. every flyfisherman dreams of this scene.

My favorite quotes of this movie......."All existance seems to fade to a to a being with my soul and memories" and the silence without my wife's never ending nagging, a 4 count rhythm and a hope that a fish will rise."

So inspirational! It just lifts my soul!

  • @Tuberidin01 Agreed, and one day.. I will find one..

  • One of my all-time favorites. I wish there were more movies like this.

  • Oh my goodness,Tom Skerrit, and Brad Pitt should have won academy awards for this one.Awesome and beautiful. No place in the world is prettier than Montanna USA.

  • Beautiful! Just beautiful!

  • i saw 1:20 on when i was rreally high and thought it was the funniest thing ive ever seen in my life lmfaooo. now that im sober it is sad =.(

  • well done, norman mclean, not robert redford

  • "Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it" that was my favourite quote in my elementary school graduation year book.

  • I can't watch this with out bursting out in tears. I think of all the people that I didn't understand and who are gone now, especially my late wife. Still, I watch this ending over and over. I don't think this is motivated by empty sentimentality but rather by some profound catharsis that this scene evokes. Something that I can't put into words at least not ones as powerful as Robert Redford recites in the voice over.

  • @Cthulu54 Afew months ago I looked this scene up. It has always been very emotional for me. I happened to see your comment. It moved me a great deal. We lost our daughter a few months ago, and I didn't understand so many things about her. I don't want that to happen again. I am hopeful in that I will see her again. And I will be more understanding of the ones I love.

  • @nick1451 Thank you for your kind comments. I offer my condolences and I will remember you in my prayers.

    Respectfully Jeff Brownlee

  • Bravo...one of the greatest movies I have ever seen.

  • Perhaps the most beautiful conclusion to a movie (and book) ever written. A true work of art.

  • THE greatest, most enduring and life applicable ending to any movie....goosebumps, tears; the brevity of life and the human condition. I will never get sick of this. Thank you Norman. Thank you Robert.

  • I watched this movie when I was a teenager and this movie gave me a different dimension to life. And you know what I dream that when i will dry from this beautiful world I would be able to see the last part of this film in my last time. Who said the words are important in life. There are things that cannot be explained even with words. Words are just not good enough. This movie stabs us in good sense.

  • please, could anybody send me the text of the poem: Evetually, all things ....

    It would be very great.

    Thanks

  • @TheMatzee - Go to your local library and rent, "A River Runs Through It & other stories" by Norman Maclean. A River Runs Through It is just over a hundred pages. You won't be disappointed.

  • I have yet to understand how 3:30 seconds of film can summarize 41 years of life, though it does...I too am haunted by waters.

  • As a fisherman...this movie is so touching. I have chased trout my entire life, and i have come to appreciate the spirituality of it some time ago. I know that when i am on the stream ..it is my church...my sanctuary, and whatever problems exist in my life just fade away like the day sky to the night. Without it, my life would not be complete......

  • @Harrisononthesack me too bud

  • My heart and memory hurts every time I watch this scene and this movie. It makes one dream of better times, of those we love and the realization that as precious as life is, it's nothing without love and memory.

  • @skatze1

    well said.

  • Whenever I feel like a good cry.....I just think of this movie ending. Works every time.

  • Message is simple - cherish each moment but don't hold on to it. Enjoy and let it go. I live here away from my family, my parents, brothers and sisters. In 2005 I once ate after coming from work with my two brothers and my father and mother. I enjoyed that moment, and its been 5 years since I had such an experience. Life is in short, too short. We lose so many moments in anger, rage, hatred, arrogance, ego. Eventually all things merge into one.

  • @saywow2002 So beautifully comprehended...so beautifully experienced!

  • @saywow2002 I so understand what you mean... I don't talk to my brothers or sisters the way I use to. We lost touch and don't really know eachother anymore.. It's sad. But, I know that life is but a passover to the big picture.. I believe in god and hope he will have the answers to all the questions in my heart. I try to understand my family but like he say's you can love without complete understanding.

  • @730ian

As we grow older, we become the truth we are inside. I am sorry to hear about your brother's and sisters. I am close to all of them but I know who is what. Don't try to understand your family, its pointless. All siblings might come from same parents, but we are different people. I care for all my family members, some I love some I don't.

  • @saywow2002 Thank you for those words.. Yeah, it's becoming more clear as time passes by.. I love them as well, but I wish they would see me for who I really am.. They still see me as a young boy not a grown man. It's frustrating!

  • @730ian That's a good thing, that means you had a wonderful childhood with lots of love. If they still see you as a child, that means they love you more than you think. My mother still calls me piddu like a 5 yr old. She says to her I will be always a stupid spoiled 5 yr brat, no matter how old I get. It's OK if your family sees you as a young boy, cause they probably don't want to let go of their fond memories with you as a boy. How does the society see you? That's more important.

  • @saywow2002 Well said.............

  • @mech289 Thanks I appreciate that....

  • @saywow2002 I believe, the only simple message is; Text messaging RANTS are as stupid now as in Moses day. The movie shows Actions are much louder than words unless your Robert Redford. So it is very complex.

  • Man..... I swear this is one of the best movies i have ever seen ..... No.... This is the best movie i have ever seen or i will ever see ..... I cried after watchin this movie .....Hats off to Mr.Redford ..... I will watch this movie whenever i can.... and i want to visit Blackfoot and do flyfishing with paul and norman :) ..... atleast i can dream like that .....

  • or just the dream of fly fishing on the big black foot!

  • Thanks buddy :) ...... I'll surely visit blackfoot when i go to America .... Till then i live in my dreams abt montana.... If what they have shown about montana is true .... it is really heaven in the earth :)........

  • i live some states away but i have been there, even the major cities arnt that big, and id say about 85% or more is still natural

  • May god have mercy on me to visit the "Big Sky Country" ....... :)

  • Yeah, Bonner (the town the Macleans lived in) is just east of Missoula. You can follow Hwy 200 east over to near Wolf Creek (where the Burns family lived)... just an incredibly beautiful drive!

Don't just consider visiting the Big Blackfoot... make sure you visit Rock Creek (Valley of the Moon is very nice), and take the drive on US 12 west past Lolo Hot Springs into Idaho (go to the Lochsa Lodge and Jerry Johnson Hot Springs over there). Then you will begin to know...

  • Thanks dude .... :) ...... But now i am in india and i dont know when i will be able to visit those places you have mentioned....... Till then i cherish the scenes from the movie about Montana and blackfoot :)......

  • yeah man you are right when i was little i watced this but i was like 7 years old now i am 14 and i cried when i have seen it i have matured and i understand feelings and emotions more that made me cry more because of the ending was too strong and in those 7 years i was looking for this movie i was always thinking of this movie

  • This exactly looks like same story of mine ......I watched this movie during my school days and i always wanted to see this movie again ...... no matter what your age is ....you simply cant stop crying coz the message is too strong(I'm 25) ....... This is THE movie about love ,,,,,

  • i 1st saw it when i was 13 or 14 im 20 now but when i saw i cried too its sad movie one of my favorites and just like you i always thought about this movie after i saw it

  • Well I love this Movie and its messg. It seems there are several folks who miss the whole messg of this clip. And of course it would have to be those who "claim" they are Religious or Christians wouldnt it. What is the Large Messg here? What was it that Your Christ said was the most Important of All? I love this Movie and its larger messg. I dont want to argue your faith(s) with you just enjoy this wonderful clip

  • To Supamaka. I'm sure there are some other films in a similar vein. I'll put my mind to it. So far though no other movie has hit me quite as profoundly as this one.

  • The absolute, most truthful, and greatest ending ever produced in any film of all time. Never have I seen a better juxtaposition of a narrative and words. So heartfelt, so truthful, so enveloping in its scope. This film really should be required viewing in every level of our education system. I get chills every single time I witness this.

  • Frost your "opinion is yours" but please dont think we out here must agree with Your Opinion. Christ was not Real but a MAN Named Jesus was he lived in a Town called Nazareth and he was killed for hos convictions. He was NOT God in the Flesh because GOD does not exist except in your Mind Frost. This Movie and this Clip serves a much larger Purpose on the grand scheme of the Universe than a Narrow Minded Religion like your CHristian Religion

  • 1234uz--Your choice whether to agree--YOUR CHOICE.

It seems you show a narrow mind more so than frost2047

  • I always amuses me when atheists refer to Jesus of Nasereth as "Christ". You are aware that it wasn't his last name? That be referring to him as "Christ", you are confirming his deity? If you're going to deny him as the Son of God, try not contradict yourself by simultaneously declaring him the messiah.

  • I basically sob my way through the end of this movie.

I fear growing older. I fear leaving home, and missing so much.. I fear not taking advantage of the right things. I fear missing the right things.

I fear that I will not catch my fish...so to speak.

  • Have no fear you have learned the lesson by stating the words you have written here. Life and Death are simply part of our journey, eventually all things do merge into one and the river does run through it. Live you life to the fullest and have no regrets that is the true part of being human.

  • I love this movie so much - makes me cry everytime I watch it - beautiful - thankyou for sharing

  • As I get old I realize that to become old is to some extent to become haunted. This ending is so powerful. Brilliant! Thanks for posting it.

  • pro1tein. I rarely sign in to youtube these days, but your comment inspired me - in a way. I'm older than you and I live in England. I used to know what you know, but I've let a lot of it go now. You could say I know less than I ever did, but in a way I can't yet define, I know more. Keep learning, brother. But don't forget to forget either. Some things are not worth remembering. Respect.

  • Very well said, I watched this movie yesterday and it haunts me even now, whatever is said is absolutely true, and I have always dwelt on that subject, could you suggest similar movies like this, I would love to watch them

  • i am almost 30 yrs old now...my god how time goes by way to fast...way to fast...almost not fair...and i have a bit to go and more to learn, but i am starting to gather wisdom....some of those who were in my life when i was younger have died...familiy has passed on....

for younger people, it seems the older you get the more that gets taken away from you, try to enjoy what you can and take opportunities when you can and not worry about what you didnt do.

god i love this movie, great ending

  • @pro1tein - well do what you think is right and will not have regrets.

  • so much double meaning behind his words. such a great ending!!! a great book!! great film!!

  • I think being a fisherman, and all that comes with it, can help in the the understanding of what is said here...though obviously its not essential. I cant speak to my father at times, we are poles apart, but when we are on a riverbank it is as though we are the same person. This movie for me, captures that feeling perfectly.

  • The allegory of nature, the river, the idea of time and human longing absolutely capture my soul. Missing some one so much yet having endless hope that "a fish will rise" is brilliant. The poetry of the river of eternity with water formed by tears covering the rocks that protect the words of the past humbling our own always slays me. I am humbled by the strength of emotion that can be felt and the importance yet insignificance of ourself. It is one perspective and helps in understanding.

  • Try - That was beautiful :)

  • I cannot watch this scene and am crying as I write this. The waters metaphorically represent time and the things that float on it. I have reached to bigger things in my life and am successful doctor. But I am still haunted by the memory of my brother who died when I was 18. All things merge into one since we return to everything and yet nothing. Only some of the words are theirs, but they are the ones that matter most. I will never be free of pain but still reach out for the memory.

  • Excellent writing. You have a great understanding!

  • I am a young man, and even though I don't fully understand what the narrator means by what he says in this final soliloquy, It trully does move me. Im not sure exactly what it means "I am haunted by waters" "And the words are theres" but maybe someday i will understand. magnificant.

  • He is 'haunted by waters' because so much of his life and memories, of his brother, his father, his boyhood, took place near the rivers of his youth. When you become an older man so much of the past is still with you. And yes, haunts you.

  • Ganbare old man.

(Gambare)"to try hard," "to hang in there," or "to stick with (something)."

  • HERMOSA PELICULA

  • A very moving story. This should have won best picture & writing. Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. I too, could not hold back tears.

  • I'm man enough to say this movie brought tears to my eyes

  • No (hu)man would ye be , who could not allow himself to feel!

  • vary touching, one of my favorite films of all time! i cryed!

  • Great movie........probably my favorite of all time.

  • This is one of the best films of the last twenty years. It's real, timeless, and profoundly touching.

  • Agreed. And the wonderfully rapturous score from Isham helps.

  • Awesome film.

    Really touches deep.

  • montana is the greatest place in the world

i grew up there, and when i graduate i will return, and spend the rest of my life there.

  • and i am jealous of you, i live in seattle from kansas city. i drove through montana and almost just stayed there...fell in love with missoula...am going back there in march when i drive through....

  • ......... and a hope that a fish... will rise.....

I am haunted by waters..... This movie rocked! Very spiritual!

  • "I am haunted by waters" ..........

  • This movie rips my heart apart. Well done, Robert Redford..

  • Great film. *****

  • I just lost a friend that I may have been able to save if she had asked for help. This is a little comforting.

    I love this movie.

  • A beautiful beautiful movie and book; the bittersweet nostalgia is always there: "Tears, Idle Tears, I know not what they mean...."

  • In the waters of time.

    Everyone dies.

But not everyone, ever really lives.

    Gemma

  • Thats very nice Gemma.

  • Is there any scene in any film that provokes so much nostalgia and emphasizes how precious life is and spending it with those we love and hold dear?

    Beautifully written, great film.

  • Then in the Arctic half-light of the canyon, all existence fades to a being with my soul and memories and the sounds of the Big Blackfoot River and a four-count rhythm and the hope that a fish will rise.

Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of those rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters.

  • Under the rocks

    Are the words

    Of the dead

    Our loved ones

Who we really did not know

    Or understand

    I hear them speaking

    In the waters...

  • this movie and book got me to start fly fishing. and now have been for years

  • I really want to as well...

I sea fish, but there seems a lot of skill to fly fishing and iy certainly is something that connects us with nature and our thoughts.

    Great movie.

  • its not as much skill as just knowing what to do and where to look to fish. its easy once you get the hang of it..

and you catch lots lots lots lots more fish fly fishing

  • Sorry thats roughly what I meant, knowing seasons, when the fish are feeding, what fly's etc. I have watched a few salmon and trout fishing programs & I know its more complicated than it looks. All types of fishing with a rod are though.

  • ya. when you into line weights and tying flies it can get complicated, but its great fun

  • homeboy25327: It's pretty obvious that you're a twelwe year old white girl...

  • One of my all time favorite books and the movie is equally as good. Robert Redford does a fantastic job narrating this movie

  • great movie-especially ending-what great prose!!!

  • You're not Black homeboy. Your attempt at trolling has failed

  • Like I said, you failed attempt to troll as an angry black man proves even more now that you're a desperate POS. LOL

  • Comment removed

  • write english you dumb fuck....

  • Racist I am not for sure.

My Country guilty of course - from UK.

have a go at Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughan Williams

  • I love this movie

  • Just an amazing movie! Thanks so much for posting this.

  • For people who fish, isn't it amazing at that moment when the fist is caught, we forget about everything, at least I do. I am in that moment solely. It's so brief yet to fulfilling. What a great direction, it really is a master piece. Shows Redford as an artist of movie direction.

  • Beautiful excerpt. True to life.

  • Poetry.

  • Why don't you just go and buy the movie ? It's worth the investment !

  • I agree. I bought it today after having already seen it a few times over that past years. But watching it again just now made me realize "Wow, I really DO love this movie."

It's a beautiful life story, and it always hurts to see it end.

  • Good Move Soggy ! This is a story for the ages, And a must movie for anyones collection !!!

  • I read the comment of the preacher at my father funeral. It sum up perfectly what I felt about him. I could not said it better.

  • I grew up fishing the same rivers they filmed the movie, this clip has many meanings on many levels.

  • "I am haunted by waters." Some of the most heartfelt words in literature.

  • after all these years, STILL my all-time favorite movie. beautiful perfection!

  • i cry all the time when i see this part... my dad read this part at my grandpa's funural... he was a hell of a fisherman and a hell of a man...

  • Isn't it a great feeling, sometimes it just takes 3:29 seconds to just lean back and feel good about everything...I close my eyes, listen to the theme, and the words said, and my own pictures fill my thoughts. Thankyou, great job.

  • Sometimes 3:29 make an entire movie. I know these did for me.

  • wonderful

  • I read this when I was in 7th grade and I didn't understand the end. I spent years trying to understand it... I think I finally did, now that I am almost done with college.

But my favorite part is when he wrote of "spots of time."

"Poets talk about 'spots of time,' but it is really fishermen who experience eternity compressed into a moment."

    pure genius.

  • having lost my brother to suicide, this movie has too much meaning.

  • My sincere condolences on your loss, Jon8tha. I hope this film clip was a comfort to you.

  • One of my all-time favorite final scenes of a movie. Touching and beautiful.

  • the movie is great but the book is probably the best book ive ever read it changed my life

  • Is the book as good as the movie???

  • yes. Its a bit different but you should read it.

  • I really enjoyed the book however the second half did not measure up to the first.

  • the book is better

  • I can relate to this old man, and the thoughts of people who are dead and that I still dont understand. I lost friends and family members, and this movie sure bring peace in my soul and a sensation of eternity.

  • this makes me cry

  • I sport fishing to fly and I have this movie.

the words of Norman Maclean. If touch me . What always recommend this film to all who want to begin fishing the fly. Not because of the fish catch. But the poetry. And the love of nature.

  • I agree

  • deep, touches my soul

  • "You knew more than that my father said, he was beautiful". Norman McLean was the editor and chief for a comedy magazine at Dartmouth. His successor as Editor and Chief for the magazine? Dr. Seuss.

  • I never knew that part of Maclean or Seuss's history. Thanks so much for sharing

  • after every time i hear or read the end of this story i am overcome with emotion, and the thought that this man is one of the greatest writers of all time
