I need to go to Court once in a while for work and judges don't take any shit as far as casual clothing. They take it as an insult and depending on the judge, aside from getting chewed out my department might get a monetary sanction.

I went to traffic court and nearly everybody there was dressed in sweatpants or jeans. What the hell? I was there for a lapsed registration and wore a business casual outfit. Nothing fancy. The judge immediately dismissed the ticket because I didn't look like white trash.

Standard contempt of court charge. Why are trashy people surprised that you're supposed to wear business attire in a fucking courtroom? I went to traffic court and nearly everybody there was dressed in sweatpants or jeans. What the hell? I was there for a lapsed registration and wore a business casual outfit. Nothing fancy. The judge immediately dismissed the ticket because I didn't look like white trash.

Freedom is all well and good but laws are required to protect that freedom, that's the paradox; if there were no laws then people who wish you harm could do as they wanted.
This may not be a case of endangerment of life, but the law is to be respected, she was told twice, she still did it. I have no sympathy and the judge was absolutely right to punish her for her insolence.
If you're in court, you make yourself presentable.

@bizarrefruit Judges are people and if there's one thing I've learned is judge or not people sometimes use bad judgement..It can even happen to a judge...In my opinion the judge was out of line here, who gives a damn if someone has on short shorts? A judge on a power trip who probably missed her coffee or was held up in traffic.. Difference is she can ruin someones life to blow off some steam. I've found that some judges use thier power to often through arrogance. Sad but TRUE...

I am certain you are correct about judges being harsher depending on their mood, but there´s a pretty good reason for wearing smart clothes, ESPECIALLY if you have been warned twice before.

Yes American is a free country, but there are certain things you should not wear to certain places. It's called common sense! You don't wear biker shorts to a wedding. You don't wear a formal dress to a skating rink, you don't wear a bikini to church and you don't wear a tank top with shorty shorts to court! The judge had warned this girl twice before, I guess this was the judges way of letting this girl know, she wasn't playing!

I felt sorry for her, but I don't think people really have a "right" to wear whatever they want. No, women don't need to wear a black cloth-cover from head to toe with only slits for eyes. That is a violation of rights. But I'm tired of girls (young and old) walking down Walmart with shorts up their cracks. I'm a girl and I don't want to show my butt cheeks and crotch to every Tom, Dick, and Hairy. Unless she was poor, I'm sure she had something more decent for court.

EVERYONE wears short shorts at my school AND outside of school (i've seen 13 year olds wear shorts so shorts, you can actually see there butt cheeks!). Unless it is an actual statute written in the law, NO JUDGE should be able to put a person in jail for how they dress. No matter how vulgar or distasteful it was, she had every right to wear what she wanted. That judge belongs in prison.
