Paul Morphy's sacrifice of the queen for gaining the mate was astonishing. I don't even thinked on such a brilliant solution there. That move completely kicks out the black queen's power. In fact he paralizes his opponent with this unexpected mate. Thanks for sharing it.
Great vid. Wish I were beginner enough to learn from it. I think you handled the switch from opening principles to master play analysis very well. One for the Godaughter to watch I think.
You know what, just fucking show the game as it was played...I cant stand all this, Well you could play this, or you could play that.. Just show the game as it was played!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
at 2:27, not only can the knight win a pawn. The black king loses it's ability to castle and the only valid move black can play next is Nh6. And a knight on the edge of the board is rarely any good
personally I didnt like it because the comments eventually became annoying and distracting. I understand it was for beginners, but truly this does show some pretty deep thinking and at a beginners level this might not be appropriate. I'm not very strong player, but I would have preferred this without commentary but with pauses between the moves to decide on the causes myself.
Really enjoyed this video. I love your pace and saying B7 and G6 really helps a beginner like me who is still trying to get the board down in my head.
well this was a good game, but to give it the most famous game ever title was a little much. No disrespect but Byrne vs Fischer had alot more on the line and the fact that Fischer was like 13 and won by far out ranks this match, yes this game was over in a few amount of moves but black played like a dumb ass, in fact it look like Morphy was playing me in terms of skill. not sure who he was playing or how good they really were but this game didnt show it
nice vid... tho for utter beginners which is not my case... u sounded a bit stressed out with ur voice or maybe it was just my impression... but still, very interesting way of commentary, I agree... gl with other chess stuff on youtube... M
Notwithstanding the instructional value of this game for amateurs, it should be noted that a good player will occasionally have short, one-sided, tactical games like this one against inferior opponents (I certainly have). Of the many games he must have played in his life, I'll bet Morphy would not have regarded this game as highly as many amateurs do today.
57 seconds in and still no moves (besides the first one).. its a fucking 17-move game that was stretched to 9 and a half minutes of monotone narration. Why is that all the "intellectual" videos on youtube have these boring ass people?
How much valium did that guy take before making this video? He sucked, his "insights" sucked, and stretching a 2minute video to 9 minutes also sucked. This was worse than the guy who posts moves with classical music in place of commentary.
As an IM, this is the single worst I analysis I have seen on a game that is in no way a famous game.
The commentary is elementary, and lacks depth and analysis. It is blatantly wrong at several points, and even goes as far as asking the viewer to identify mate in one.
As for the game: both white and black make elementary errors in their play. White's piece placement is weak at best. Black makes obvious blunders, starting with 5. ... Bxf3. If 6. gxf3, white wins a pawn or displaces black's king.
@XaviarC I'm surprised an IM would go as far as to comment falsely on this game. First of all, this game IS a famous game, MANY of Morphy's games are quite famous, though this is probably not the most famous game ever. Second, your line as 5. ... Bxf3. 6. gxf3 is bogus. Talking about Morphy's play first, Morphy was probably the strongest player to never become World Champion. Also, what you call "displacing" the king after 7. dxe5 Qxd1+ is FINE for black. The black king is alright in the center.
This is easily the worst commentary I've ever seen in a chess video. I actually prefer itzospain's videos, even with no commentary at all and all of the explanatory text in Spanish.
This video is what you get when you combine chess commentary with the story structure of Pulp Fiction and the narration style of Thomas the Train Engine. Five stars.

Haha, the author sounds like a narrator from a children's movie. Video starts out quiet, and then... "This was the end of the game. -pause- Checkmate! -pause- How did this... Happen? It only took 17 moves..."
I'm a chess teaching and I understand that this video is for beginners. However, the comments were still a bit lame and don't hold your interest. On the good side, at least this guy made a chess video...which is more than what most of the people writing comments have done.

No your right. I totally see your point I guess i was just looking to enjoy watching the game. The very first comment explaining that what they were doing was normal felt unnecessary. But yes i totally understand and your point is valid. As to your last comment, yes beginners have come to me for advice. And my comment was a bit crude i apologize. :)
@Evilbible What is so unbelievable about it? I started studying chess when I was 5 and this was THE first game my instructor showed me and my classmates; a simple tactical game for beginners. I still remember this game by heart

Morphy took advantage of the unprotected king and lack of piece development by Thomas. At first it looked like black might get smothered mated, but then it becomes apparent fairly quickly that d8 is a winning square for white. All of the subsequent exchanges are not about gaining or losing points, they are about reducing material and exposing a winning square.

People who are whining about "how the comments are too simplistic" don't know a thing about Morphy, or chess for that matter.
