  • Proud to be Manx, not the actual anthem but at least we got a tribute to our beautiful Isle from these guys, which is a lot more than most will give us, including our own....

  • this song should have been re-released two years ago to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the "Ellen Vannin"

  • I don't think people can read. The video uploader said it's the UNofficial anthem of the IOM, so stop saying it's not the anthem!

  • @bacabu30 It isn't Even an Anthem, Its just a song about the Ellan Vannin Wich sunk on its journey to Liverpool, i know this Because im a Maxie! but i hate it saying that this is an Official/Unofficial Anthem, because it isn't even an Anthem this is coming from a True Manxie. So this is kinda fact (at least i think it is XD)

  • @polopandar Well it's a SONG associated with the Isle of Man, even though it isn't its anthem or even an anthem at all! It's like Danny Boy is associated with Ireland, but isn't about Ireland nor is even an anthem!

  • @bacabu30 Yeah, but what I hate is the fact that people say its the Anthem or the say its the Unnofficial anthem.

  • @Blackrapperable

Oh also Groser is spelt Grocer. Looks like you need to learn how to spell as well.

  • @Blackrapperable @Blackrapperable

I would actually pull you finger out and do some research before you start spreading lies on the web.

For a starters the birch was only used on offenders UNDER THE AGE OF 21, Secondly the individual had to have been CHARGED either in the juvenile courts or the magistrates court for the sentence to be given by the court.

Finally the last time someone was actually given the birch was 1976 as in 1978 it was ruled as degrading at the human rights court.

  • not my national anthem and I'm manx born and bred

  • @warble1000 In fairness, the video uploader did say it was the UNofficial anthem!!

  • @Blackrapperable You have no idea about manx culture and every one here is Proper nice, yes the people here all have their ups and down BUT DOESN'T EVERY ONE you cant just take the piss of manx poeple because everyone has ups and dows and they have their own faults and maybe your watch wasn't stolen maybe you misplaced it! and dont you dare say that the Isle of man it the worst place ever and dont say The benny hill's theme is our anthem BECAUSE YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO PICK ON US MANX PEOPLE

  • @Blackrapperable You have no idea about manx culture and every one here is Proper nice, yes the people here all have their ups and down BUT DOESN'T EVERY ONE you cant just take the piss of manx poeple because everyone has ups and dows and they have their own faukts and maybe your watch wasn't stolen maybe you misplaced it! and dont you dare say that the Isle of man it the worst place ever and dont say The benny hill's theme is our anthem BECAUSE YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO PICK ON US MANX PEOPLE

  • -.-' They only time the Isle Of Man gets publicity it the TT races and it gives traffic jams and all, and for the manx people (me being 1 of them) its not really nice

  • This song is so moving it brings a tear to my eye,i would love to visit the isle of man but in summer im sure its lovely and the ppl are to. Whats it like on fags there are they taxed like in england.

  • They say no man is an island . So where does that leave the Isle of Man ?

  • @Blackrapperable Thats the trouble with people like you,you have probably met one person from the ISLE of man and think everyone is the same.. yeah its not the best place in the world but its my home u cheeky twat and saying we arent well travelled is a load of crap just because we live on an island ? IDIOT!

  • @Blackrapperable You need to fuck off u twat your doin my head in , you fucker.

  • @Blackrapperable u cheeky fucker ! im from the ISLE of man, get it right TWAT.

  • Hey! This is NOT our Anthem!!!!!! This is Ellan Vannin! Our Anthem is O' LAND OF OUR BIRTH!

Ellan Vannin is beautiful though :)

  • Gah! Robin has a lovely/beautiful/huntingly spine-chilling voice!!!!

  • the iconic bee gees fantastic song and people.

ive allways been a big fan

  • em, this is Ellan Vannin, not the National Anthem. It is beautiful though.

  • Right i'm English and work on a cruise ship which was in Douglas for the day this year, it is a lovely place and it felt like i was in wales or south england. Nice people and nice scenery views/buildings.I don't understand the hatred between 2 places we shouldn't bother them like they shouldn't bother us we should just get on. this is a comment form for a song, so what if its to do with isle of man judge it on if you like the SONG not the people.

Thank you for the hospitality i received.

  • not the manx national anthem its land of our birth but a great song any way

  • ManxMistress, you rock!, beir bua agus adh mor ort!

  • beautiful...simply beautiful...

  • @Blackrapperable Not worth the effort easier to block you goodbye

  • @Blackrapperable Oh don't worry little boy I would say with the fact your country is billions in debt and mass unemployment compared to here with surplus budget and virtually zero unemployment Bob would be a greater aid to you. Now run along and strengthen your right arm, there's a good boy.

  • @Blackrapperable Would you care to come over to my Isle and repeat this for me you pathetic little worm. Although I doubt you would due to the fact you have no balls.

  • @Blackrapperable Pardon?

  • @Blackrapperable Pardon?

  • @Blackrapperable

    Making a comparison.

  • @Blackrapperable

    No, Switzerland shouldn't invade Liechtenstein.

  • Most amazing song I have ever heard

  • Most amazing song I have ever heard

  • this isn't are official national anthem

  • On a day-to-day basis, one could say that Dublin feels "just like Britain", but it obviously isn't. Same with the IoM. IoM has NEVER been part of England or the UK. Scotland and Norway yes :-) When I grew up, the Manx accent was distinct and we spoke differently. Nowadays it's been somewhat scouser-ised due to TV and lots of incomers. But to say that IoM is just a "glorified county" is outrageous. If you have a Manx passport, you can't freely live or work in the EU - if you are UK you can.

  • @MrSetzer I wouldn't say "incomers" we have lots of Manx on the mainland. I have family born and bred on the island in Santon, but with upmost respect, the IOM would still have to depend on "UK" to look after it in times of trouble. You only have to look also at the fact that when ITV went to one whole channel, the IOM opted to leave the Border channel and get Granada news!! lets not single each one out. Liverpool love that Island even though I am from neither.I still adore the island x x x

  • A seperate entertity or simply another English county? Fake patriotism? No more different than Devon is to Yorkshire? As a regular visitor to the isle I think such things are a bit disingenuous. I think some of it is partly true but I do feel that it does have enough of it's own character and a modest amount of independence to make it 'feel' different. I don't believe the Manx triskellion flag that is so apparent everywhere is simply flown for fake patriotism or to amuse the tourists.

  • Right, let's get the song out of the way first - this clip is lifted from the ITV series 'An Audience With' - in this case 'The Bee Gees', it removes the introduction where Robin very clearly says that it is the 'unofficial national anthem'. A fuller clip that includes this intro is readily available on You Tube.

  • Robin sings a bittersweet song like no one else.

  • chorlton cum hardy , albany rd

  • Love that song

  • Comment removed

  • @theredjediknight WTF? There has never been a prime minister of the Isle of Man.

  • Great song, not the National Anthem , but a patriotic song

  • beautiful. who cares if its a national anthem or not, just enjoy a beautiful song sung by such a gifted singer

  • If it's not actually the national anthem of the Isle of Man, then what's the name of the song?

  • @captainadam1 Ellan Vannin

  • While a beloved and lovely song, it is not the actual national anthem of the isle of man. The manx are quite proud of their country and the actual national anthem reflects this quite well!

  • this is not our national anthem! our anthem is O land of Our Birth .....

  • It's a wonderful melody. Robin's voice is so unique and fantastic.... I have tears in my eyes when i hear this wonderful voice and song.....For me they the best songwriter and singers of the world ( The Bee Gees)

  • guysseriously, i'm English and every country should be free, independent of another. Free Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and anything else you may claim.

  • this song is the mutts nuts and sang with such passion

  • independance is so important, and when you hear a national athem sung with such passion it brings a tear to everyones eyes.

wish the Bee gees were born in my homeland Wales.

  • I'm English and it upsets me how everyone wants to be independent from us :(

  • @GuysSeriously

don't know what England has to do with it as Isle of Man is nearer to Scotland.

  • @GuysSeriously

Isle of Man was never englands slave like scotland and wales. We have and always be independant. But it must be great coming from a country that went around beating up 3rd world countries then claiming it had a mighty empire.

  • And... this isn't that National Anthem =/ A manx tune, but not our anthem.

    O land of our birth

    O gem of God's earth

O island so strong and so fair

Built firm as Barrule.. etc etc

  • English Tosser!

  • they are mostly English u twat

  • i am manx (fully manx) and people think we are all green land and all its great here !

  • what a heavenly voice

  • I think the isle of man should be independent. But I want the opinions of the manx about this. Leave me some.

  • I (as a Manxie) also think we should be independant.. but then there are both upsides and downsides to this. For example, at the moment we get extra college grants, but they're considering changing that.. I don't know.

  • The lost Soldiers boom

  • To costedmn. Obviously you like to show your ignorance through your crass, uneducated comments. Yes, 24gwen24, the IOM is a separate nation with its own government. Its language is Manx, a form of Gaelic, and it is not reliant at all on funding from the British. Unfortunately the last native Manx speaker died in the 70's but it is kept alive by enthusiasts.

  • Comment removed

  • How are they crass comments?

  • crass- so crude and unrefined as to be lacking in discrimination and sensibility. ''..its just shop keepers and farmers deciding....'' ''The flag...represents..fake patriotism'' . Crass comments. The House of Keys has members who are neither shopkeepers nor farmers. You cannot know whether the patriotism people feel is fake or not.

  • Dry your eyes

  • Floattankman must be a true Manx. Maybe it's the 3 legs that make it so easy for you to kick costedmn's ass.

  • Comment removed

  • There's one in the evening too

  • I'm tony brown, whats your name boy. Actually don't tell me cos i couldn't give a shit

  • I wasn't aware that the Isle of Man was a separate nation to UK.

  • Does anyone know if this song has been recorded on DVD or CD?

  • @TheHypnotoad420

Yes it has. It was first issued in 1998 on a limited edition CD single (a total of 1000). The following year the Isle of Man post office made another 10000 CD singles available as part of a set of stamps.

The same recording is currently available on the Robin Gibb CD "My favourite Christmas Carols" as issued by Edel Records in Europe (Edel 0177622ERE; EAN 4029758776223). This CD has been issued in the US and Asia as well but without this track.

  • As others have pointed out, Ellan Vannin is the Manx National Song. The Manx National Anthem is O Land Of Our Birth

  • I think Barry could not have sung it as well as Robin. Robin actually has the better range.

  • not a Bee Gees fan at all but a beautiful rendition of a beautiful song.

  • thanks for your reply mr.s.i suppose you're asked this kind of thing all the time, but i'm sure you understand the confusion.one nation, two official national anthems.(?_?)what would happen though if,heaven forbid, the UK adopts the euro i wonder?

  • Two different nations -two different national anthems. The isle of man has it's own money aswell. it is still £ but the the queen isn't wearin a crown because she isn't the queen of the isle of man she is just the lord of mann. If the UK adopts the euro the Isle of Man would still be using manx currency unless the goverment decide to change it -like mentioned before, it isn't part of the UK

  • always thought the bgs should do a trad.folk-rock album.now i'm certain.watch out fairport-steeleye! er,since when has the isle of man been a seperate nation?

  • It isn't - and never has been - a part of the UK or EU, has its own govt, currency, passports, language, flag er.....you name it. Its defence and foreign affairs are looked after by London however. It's more independent than Bermuda or the Falklands - would you say that were not separate entities?

  • It may not be part of the UK but it feels just like a small county of North West England. Its even been funded by England through greater VAT receipts than earned. The language is hardly spoken and most Manx people only recognise Ushtey because its written on waterboard vans. The currency is sterling but there are manx notes and coins which gives the govt a little extra revenue. The passports and numberplates are essentially just part of the UK systems. . . .

  • The government may be the "longest running" (or whatever nonsense they quote) but its just shop keepers and farmers deciding when to introduce UK law and with what minor tweaks so that people can think that Manx is different or to syphon more tax from other countries. The flag is everywhere and represents the fake patriotism people feel - locals and english comeover mail readers can hide behind it. The IoM is no more different to yorkshire, for example, than devon is different to yorkshire

  • @costedmn: shut up, dont have a dig at something you know absolutley nothing about! im fully manx and know the difference between people who have an opinion and people who want to make a point by insulting something they have no idea about!

we are different. we have our own language & parliment....but you are right about the tax...its awesome

  • oh, and this isnt our national anthem...but its still good

  • I have great idea about the island. Though i'm not "fully" Manx, so my opinion (obviously) is completely irrelevant.

  • @MrSetzer ? Arrane Ashoonagh dy Vannin is the anthem!

  • @MrSetzer So it is not a British Crown Dependancy

  • @QPSmiley Eh? Of course it's a Crown Dependency. Where did I say it wasn't?

  • @MrSetzer it's a self-governing British Crown Dependency.

  • RIP Andy Neill

  • this is ellan vannin not the national anthem!

  • Yeh he say's on a different video that this is the unofficial national anthem.

  • Proud to be MANX!!!

  • @stefton999

Intresting how you claim to be " proud manx " yet your profile clearly says " die hard liverpool fan from liverpool " dont try to be what your not.

  • @QuelKamos86 Well my Birth Certificate says Douglas, I lived in Kirk Michael for 5 years, still have family over there. I moved to Liverpool when I was 6, which is why it say's from Liverpool, because I live in Liverpool. If it had said Birthplace, then it would have Said IOM. Anyway, who are you to question me?

  • love them!

each of their voice is so unique

  • i love this song makes me want to be home and be with me friends

  • this was my dads favourite song and was played at his funeral R.I.P dad - david wilson died aged 42

  • The Brother Gibb's were true i-cons---no doubt about it. Great family men, and nice people. May Maurice and Andy RIP.

  • Its beautiful! The Robin voice is great.

Look at Barry who is in the emotions he went crying.

  • woooo my national anthem

  • that why the other guy the lead singer

  • so amazing makes me cry.

  • excellent très belle interprétation

  • Lovely ...

  • magnificent

  • where can i get a copy from cheers

  • Its the unofficial manx national anthem, doesn't mean people don't consider it an anthem.

  • This may not be the official version but it is an authentic spiritual one, not so?

  • I hate to tell anyone but this is not the National anthem of the Isle of man the manx national anthem is called Land of our birth

  • i love this song anyone know if it's available on cd.

  • no this is not available, i know because i asked barry and robin myself, the only place where you can get a copyy is in douglas, isle of mann

  • Comment removed

  • robin's voice is relaxing my ears and body *sigh*

  • oh really hi me!

  • i love this song, is there translation in manx gaelic? that's be great!

  • Yes there is, but I'm not sure where you can get it.

  • This is not the anthem of the Isle of Mann. It should be, but it's not!

  • Why? The real National Anthem is just as awesome as this!

  • true it is...but i think its just the melody of it...i think O Land Of Our Birth, sounds like a proper national anthem whereas Ellan Vannin sounds like Jerusalem or I Vow To Thee My Country, which you could classify as Unoffical National Anthems For England or Flower Of Scotland

  • So moving! Robins voice is just pure magic.
