The conductor, using the new Bärenreiter edition, interprets the "soli" indication in Violas (bar 59) and Celli (bar 63), as indicating that this variation (bars 60-75) is to be played by a string quartet of soloists. The 1st and 2nd Violins however do not have this "soli" indication in their parts and so Beethoven's intention is therefore not entirely clear. The charm of the decision here cannot be denied.
Bellissimo -- tutto bene qui. Although I know this Third Symphony from the distant days of my youth, I have made an important discovery hearing this musical ensemble. Music is indeed very much alive and will live forever.
There are so many things to enjoy about this piece. I love the string quartet within the larger orchestra that starts at 1:24. And the fugue that starts at 2:37. Such genius.
@FruitMeate I'm going to have to agree with you on this. And I've recently realized that I too haven't sufficiently appreciated this movement of the Eroica. This must be corrected.
These guys are having so much fun! It's really inspiring to watch them make such great music and have such a great time at the same time. This is maybe the best Beethoven I've heard.
I listened to this whole performance! Thanks so much bunkyosan for posting this piece. It's one of my favorites. I love this orchestra, such a musical group who plays so well together. Paavo Jarvi is an amazing conductor! The flute solo in the 4th mvt was amazing. The strings seriously worked it! The woodwinds played with such grace, and the brass so triumphant. Btw, the violas were seriously playin! Great performance of a great work by a revolutionary composer! 5 stars all the way =)
OH MY Gosh....this id def for me the best recording i have heard so far on youtube. I love the Erocia and this movement is my fav esp 7:48 to 8:35...what a beauty!!! An absolute magnificent moving bit of music....Those horns that come through just make my heart want to melt....Brilliant. I maybe only 12 but this piece does something to me....:)
I so can't wait to her a live recoding of the whole Piece.
how did so much incredible music come out of one man? wow.. also I love how playful the beginning is, how everything builds up on this funny little exchange between winds and strings.:D
That's the first time I've ever seen somebody do the variation before the winds with string soloists only (1:24) Apparently a few sources suggest Beethoven may at one point have had this in mind for this variation. I think it sounds great!

interesting how he put a string quartet at 1:24 in a symphony, no else before had done that

@lindzyIsAwesome yes, a very original idea that Tchaikovsky later stole for his 1812 overture (not a symphony, but still..)
