Ethanol is a failed experiment and needs to be abandoned as a source of fuel. I hear what you are saying about alternative sources of oil. Since NASA is no longer exploring space, why can't they be tasked with developing a fuel cell that allows a car to travel 500 mi on one charge @ 65 mph? If affordable, THAT would solve a lot of our dependance issues. If the trucking companies were to convert first that would at least help to insulate the cost of goods & products from fuel price increases.
Municipalities could use methane from sewage disposal plants to run their vehicles. If guys like Al Gore started living like he wants the rest of us to live, then this would add credibility to the green movement. Otherwise, they stir up disbelief and resentment.
Similar issues many years ago when there were people talking about manufacturing electric vehicles - the big auto manufacturers made sure it didn't happen at that time. It's all about money and power - always has been, always will be.
