Hah! Beautiful song that I first heard on Mickey Spillane 'Mike Hammer'.... Anybody know who done that version?
The song became synonymous with cleavage and still, 30 years later, gives me a warm, optimistic glow. I always thought Earl Bostic performed the original, seems it was already a classic before he got to cover it. Always heard sax versions though until today when I found the excellent Viscounts version, only to trump it with the stunning Ventures. Damn, I love the internet. ;-)
harlem nocturne was written by earle hagen, the same cat that wrote the old andy griffith show theme song (he was even the guy that whistled the melody)
Tantalizing trivia! I've read that veteran character actor Everett Sloan (who played a moonshining farmer named Jubal on that classic 60's sitcom) wrote words to Hagen's theme song but which were never recorded (as far as I know). Read the lyrics years ago...something about going to the ol' fishing hole. THANKS for your illuminating comment! :-)
What makes this cover so great, they pulled it off without the benefit of a Sax!! Not too many groups could do that. Many thanks Mr. Stupullen. Haven't heard this in over 40 years.
Great Selection from The Ventures' 2nd LP: "THE VENTURES" This is one of my all time favorite Ventures LPs!! Brings back great memories... I have video footage of my brother and I catching star fish and rock crabs when we were just little kids... while my dad was filming us, you can hear The Ventures 2nd album playin' songs in the background like 'Harlem Nocturne' and 'Perfidia' and 'Ups and Downs' etc. FIVE STARS * * * * * A+A+A+A+A+A+A+A+A+A+A+
Oh man, one of my forgotten favorites by The Ventures. I had this song on a record at one time but I don't think I still do. This song used to play in my head sometimes. Good stuff. Thanks!
