The reason he stopped the fight was because of his ear. If you have ever seen the whole fight you would know that Thompson went into the fight with a HUGE cyst in his left earlobe. They almost didn't even let him fight, and once the it popped the ref had no option but the stop the fight.

That commentator there saying the stoppage was terrible and James Thomson himself taking it out of the ref; both seem to have no idea of the concept of safety and kudos to the ref. Kimbo is no great shakes; in fact he's God-awful and has been proven to be by messrs Petruzelli, Nelson and Mitrione, but the point is those shots were having effect and were potentially dangerous if not stopped so again, commentator: shut the fuck up!

Thompson's ear was popped, probably the eardrum also burst because of the swollen cartilage. So, his equilibrium was probably fucked; didn't know right from left, up from down, etc. So, he was at risk for a major concussion or worse if the ref let 'em keep fighting. Smart stoppage, if you ask me, even if it did look premature.
