Aw, why would you feed them live x.x Yeah, yeah, I know you've heard it all before, but I worked at a pet store for a while and I hated seeing people come in and buy all the live mice to feed to their snakes, when frozen prey works just as well--if not better. I've been feeding my corn snake frozen mice her whole life, and she's growing into a fine, healthy girl. Though today I caught what I think is a rosy boa, and I'm not sure what to feed her...
@Kailys3 Frozen mice are good for snakes who will actually accept them. But obviously not every snake will. And for me personally, live mice are the only ones available for single purchase. If I want frozen mice, I have to buy an entire pack of them and keep them in the freezer. Not everyone in my house really wants dead mice the freezer lol
There are a few issues at hand here. I realize this is not your snake, pgcrockhead, so perhaps you can pass this on to your friend for the well-being of the snake.
First, as mentioned before, cedar (or pine, redwood, etc.) chips should not be used for any reptile, as they contain toxic oils that will kill the snake eventually. Aspen shaving are the best substrate to use for Rosies, as it is more sanitary than sand and is non-toxic.
Second, your friend should not be feeding live adult rodents to this snake. Every Rosy I've worked with has converted to frozen-thawed rodents without problems. Live rodents are very capable or severely or fatally injuring the snakes they are being fed to.
I have worked with reptiles for years and I've seen literally dozens of snakes that were injured or killed because their owners fed them live prey. It's a very real possibility, which is why all serious snake owners will convert their animals to FT prey if at all possible.
Thanks for the words of wisdom. I talked to my friend about the cedar chips, and it turns out that the bedding was some other type of material, but I forgot what she said it was. As for the live rodents, I suppose it would be illogical to assume that we could stop the mouse from hurting the snake if we saw that it was trying to, but that was a concern of ours, and she never left the snake alone as long as a live mouse was in there. I'll talk to her about the frozen food though. Thanks.
-Smacks pgcrockhead.- Cedar chips? What the FUCK is wrong with you? Are you TRYING to give that poor snake scale rott? Fucking retard. -Smacks again.-
I had no idea cedar chips are bad for snakes... but that's ok because it's not my snake. It's a friend's snake, and I will let her know she needs to use sand. Thanks.
Just thought I would give you a quick word of caution: I'm not offended, but you may offend someone else if you go around talking to people like that. I hope that's not your goal. Either way, I appreciate you telling me about the cedar chips.
dag... that mouse is so fast, the snake couldnt even catch him... the only reason he got him was cuz the mouse landed on him. it was awesome how he fit the thing down his throat... i love your snake! i want him!
