There is a very interesting list of MANY famous people who had polio on the website for Disabled-world. The list includes Donald Sutherland, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Alan Alda, Sir Arthur Charles Clarke, Olympic Athletes Wilma Rudolph and Georgia Coleman, Australian Billionaire Kerry Packer, American Billionaire Dennis Washington, Jack Nicklaus, Mia Farrow, Marion Davies, Neil Young, Saxophonist David Sanborn, Joni Mitchell, Supreme Court Justice William Orville Douglas & Francis Ford Coppola
Wilma Rudolph: After contracting polio and losing use of her left leg, Rudolph was fitted with braces. Refusing to accept the limitations imposed upon her, when nobody was around she would take off her braces and practice walking. Then she went on to win GOLD medals for running! :)
@hadarnan8 most likely when they gave polio vaccines at school is was the live weakened virus that you had to drink which could give you the virus. now most people get the dead virus which is a shot. you most likely got it when you were born because babies must get it. if you are living in the u.s.a you dont really have to worry about getting the virus because the U.S.A. is considered a polio free country but some parts of africa still get polio.
@Grubba22 Please keep in mind, most of us were too young to know TODAYS facts, and certainly the doctors did NOT know what they were dealing with back then. I was FOUR, my parents passed away LONG ago. My doctors from then are dead. We know what we were told and what we experienced. So PLEASE be kind in your responses, people are posting what they know or experienced, and this should be a safe place to do that.
In my personal experience, the "bad" vaccines, came at a time when doctors did not know how to diagnose the kind of polio that came about 30 days after the vaccine. Some called it Guillaume - Barre syndrome, others called it a "form of polio". All I know was that my life was permanently altered, and still is to this day.
Dr. Bernard Greenberg, UNC before Congress in 1961 that polio, which declined prior to the introduction of the first polio vaccine, *increased* following the introduction of the vaccine, for 2 years, and authorities deliberately manipulated the statistics to cover that up--i.e., the polio vaccine was a complete disaster. Entire countries refused it, and saw declines as well as those that did. Studies showed that polio paralysis occurred 4x more often in vaccinated people
This reminds me of my great aunt, when she was 15 she was diagnosed with polio and was bound to a wheelchair. She took gymnastics and was planning on becoming a dancer. She passed away about five years ago, we like to think that she can dance again now.
I got polio from the vaccine. It was the supposedly killed vaccine. Polio virus was injected into me, a perfectly healthy child, and next thing I was in the hospital in isolation for weeks. I did not vaccinate my children. Vaccines are poison.
@Imogen1885 sorry to hear that my condoplences for what they are worth.polio is nt a virus and is not cotagious it is from environmental toxins, has been identified as long ago as greece , workers in tannery would get it from exposure to type of metals used in it. at the time polio came mainly iomproper use of ddt and others.its a form of meningitis and pathologists doctors the name at whim.all vaccines are harmful. all of them.and not of any good in deaease prevention
Also had Polio in 1959 in Portugal. I am having alot of trouble now. I feel for you and was in the same situation. Love your attitude. I did the same things (surgeries etc...).
The shot now days is safe, nothing live in it, and the oral vaccine hasn't been given in the US since 2000. But I understand why people would worry. I'm one of the hidden numbers effected by OPV. I was a year old when my life changed forever, but they didn't diagnose it. I'm finding that that is a real trend in the late 1980's. They wanted to make it seem like polio was a worry of the past. The won't diagnose it, but I am treated as if I did and I now know that I will have to deal with PPS.
I had spinal-bulbar polio in 1955 when I was 11. It affected my whole body. Now I have PPS. After living a regular life I now have gone most of the way backwards. I just want to respond to those here who warn against vaccines. I would not wish polio on anyone. However, the vaccines have prevented so many of us from getting polio. I think it's a no brainer to get vaccinated. Polio is almost eradicated worldwide.
I had polio in both legs beginning in 1955 at 11 months old. Had the ankle and tendon transfer surgeries at 12, 15 and 18 years old. Thought I had a mild case until I reached my mid 40's. Now am disabled with PPS
I had polio a few months after the shot in 1957. I was six yrs old and had just started first grade. Because it was a mild case I progressed to about 80% in time. About 30yrs later I began to fall for no real reason. I was diagnosed with Post-Polio Syndrome. I am in a wheelchair but am thankful I had those 30 yrs. I do alright in the chair.
Live vaccines were used and these were throught to in rare instances cause polio - however synthetic ones are now used. I caught Polio about 18 months after having the booster so it didn't offer 100 percent immunity.
I had polio in 1955, I was 7months old. Your right we have to find ways to keep on going. I have a problem finding someone to build a brace that works for me the one I have hurts in so many places. I search websites in hopes I will find someone that can make a brace that works.
@will1951 If you are in the States, in California, find Hanger Prosthetics in Orange County. They build amazing braces, as well as life-like limbs, and all kinds of prosthetics. We featured them on our TV series Miracle Workers, a Dreamworks/Renegade 83 production for ABC. You have to go and have them molded for you and adjusted, but amazing work they do.
It would be valuable information to see a statistic on how many people are getting Polio from the vaccine. Of course that's wishful thinking because vaccines are so wonderful and help people so much.
Are some of you saying that you contracted Polio after receiving a certain vaccine, and that the two are associated? I'm doing vaccine research on my own, and would like to know more about this aspect of the story. Thank you.
Hi.... im giovanni from philippines, i'm a polio victim myself eileen, i'm now 35 yrs old and i had this polio i think when i was 6 months young, thats waht they told me..... i hope we can have an organization of all polio victims all over the world.
@mamawisdom You will never get accurate statistics, because doctors don't usually acknowledge when vaccines cause the illnesses that they were intended to prevent, or when they cause other illnesses. I'm a case in point. Several days after I got an OPV when I was 5 years old my left leg became paralyzed. But the docs who examined me didn't diagnose polio. Instead, they called it an unknown disease with polio-like symptoms!!! The statistics lie. Vaccines are more dangerous than people think.
In life you rarely meet people that truly inspire you and help you search within yourself for that strength that seems to resonate from a etherial place within... Eileen Grubba is one of those people.
Eileen is absolute inspiration. The people who know her undeniably use 2 words to describe her, "angelic" and "heroic." The talent/looks combination is a plus to her defining character strengths. Love her!!!
You are the most brave and beautiful and wonderful and most generous and most inspirational person I've ever met. You are living more than most people know how to. You make me happy. Love you my friend. Anastasia.
Beautiful. But, knowing you, I think they missed a major point: You went from a wheelchair to cheerleading, hiking mountains, becoming an accomplished actress, and beating cancer. This barely shows the spirit that we all get to see. You shine.

@hadarnan8 Yes, it was caused from a bad vaccine. Too much of the live virus in it, is what they thought at the time.
