Splash them mother fucker's yeah!!!I hope them pilots were jamming metallica-SEEK AND DESTROY!They shot them punks down like it was no thing...U.S.A. all motherfucking day.
The Libyans took the first shots in '81 during a similar engagement, hence why the Tomcats shot first this time. American aircrew do not just go down range carelessly with their finger on the trigger. Know your history and your enemy.
And some Lybian pilots learned a harsh lesson. DO NOT face up against an F-14 at what it was designed to do...take out multiple air targets at once. For their lesson, they earned an ejection and a cold bath. Many others here have already said it, and I agree, God I miss the Tomcats!
@DevilsRockContract After the Migs took off the F-14s painted them with their radar as a warning. The did not turn back. The Tomcats then attempted to turn their noses away 5 times, but every time the Migs turned back into the Tomcats (jinked back into them). The Migs were looking for a fight, and they got one. Its like a guy with a knife who keeps coming after you as much as you try to avoid him... at some point you have to fight.
@nfr201 But in that case F-14 is a guy with a knife because they are on "enemy" territory, there is absolutely no reason for Migs not to take off. NO ofence but wtf are americans doing there? Spreading justice? or they want a little drop of oil? I know they didnt defend and interrupt other countries that were in conflict, of course they didnt have any oil, so there was no profit from interference. :(
@DevilsRockContract Not really. International law recognizes 12 nautical miles off your shore as International Waters. Again, the US 6th fleet, and the Tomcats that were engaged above were over International Waters. They don't need a reason to be there, its international waters.
The Migs had 6 opportunities to avoid an engagement, again, over international waters. When they got painted by F-14s and any of the 5 times the F-14s turned away from the Migs.
@DevilsRockContract Also - I am all for having an honest international relations/international diplomacy discussion - but once you start the "war for oil" argument I'm out. I mean, I guess Somalia, Kosovo and Afghanistan got the US lots of oil right? nfr201 signing off...
@DevilsRockContract You obviously don't know your history of this encounter.1)We are only allowed to engage & fire after being fired upon & it doe's not matter where this takes place either, over international waters or over a foreign air space, unless of course "War"has been declared by either both or one Waring party. In this particuliar case our F14's had already been fired upon, which is not shown in this video. Our boys then pursued the 2 migs & then they, the migs turned around to engage
@alivewire13 I think F-14 had a nice cruise on shiny sky over deep blue sea when suddenly the mean-woman-rapist-terrorist-antihuman-911-neonuclear-AlahuAkbar-C4planted Mig-23 opened fire on USA F-14 for Holy reasons. That`s what happend. Damn that oiled country.
dumb ass americans, take on su-27 or mig 31...pick some one your on size 4 a change...we kick f-117 ass in Serbia...Sorry abot that, but we didnt know it was invisibile..xD
@SuperNjak Lol one F-117 was shot down, when you look at the amount of sortie's it's done in AAA infested area's and not been shot down it's very impressive. But like shown in 1999, there not invisible and definetaly not invicible, Stealth is the wrong word to use. Reduced Radar Cross Section is a better term. :)
"The Floggers accelerated and continued to approach. At 6 nmi (11 km) range the Tomcats split and the Floggers followed the wingman while the lead Tomcat circled to get a tail angle on them. The wingman engaged with a Sparrow and downed one of the Libyan aircraft. One of the US pilots broadcast "Good kill! Good kill!" The lead Tomcat closed on the final Flogger from the rear quadrant and at 1.5 nmi (2.8 km) the pilot fired a Sidewinder, which hit its target
This happens 20 or 30 years ago! Why is this even being discussed? I was in the Navy when this happened, got the patch from Oceana while I was in school with VF-101!
@leangle1988 Because Libyan fighters flew into international airspace, well beyond their typical patrol zone. They were heading directly at an off-shore training exercise involving US Navy A-6s, E-3s and F-14s among other aircraft. Once considered a threat, they were intercepted by F-14s which did exactly what this video portrays.
@leangle1988 Either (A) the Libyans were way off course, (B) they thought the A-6 was either violating their airspace or attacking their country(my guess), or (C) they were simply trying to show force in defending their area of thew world. I wasn't there and I have no evidence to support any of this though, so I can't give you an exact answer.
@Schizianity They got killed because the Libyan command didn't send a rescue team to get them, but no one dies in this video. Some planes just explode.
F-22 is NEVER use in Libya bcuz the sortie that the USAF planned doesn't require the use of F-22 since Libyan has small fighter jets fleet and the air-defenses are obsolete. The coalition has AWACs, large number of interceptors, many electronic jammers, and standoff weapons to easily knock out Gaddafi's pussy force.
You don't risk the F-22 against Libyan AF...they just don't have the capabilities to defeat us so you don't even chance losing an F-22 (mechanical issues or whatever...lucky shot from the ground, etc...) for something F-18s can handle.
your F-14 is no match to my favorite the F-22 Raptor..........the best of them all..Stealthy.......they would just whoop your ass without being detected...
My dad helped build the F-14's, FA-18's, and F-15's he says the F-14's were on of the best built fighterjets and were able to make incredible turns during dogfights, but were dangerous do to the fact they were unstable in highspeeds
@M4A108 Unfortunately, someone in the Pentagon decided the F-22 wasn't worthy of that mission. :( Fucking shame. We could've whipped the bastards into shape in minutes.
@M4A108 The US is still using the F-15 on some fleet you really expect it to have F-22?? comon! They'll probably not get more than 10 when it will be out!! The US is in giant debt! Get over it american, capitalism is maybe not the best system in the world!
@M4A108 haha yeah but one problem with that, no F-22 was used in the No Fly Zone, they all got grounded after that F-22 crashed in Alaska, There's a problem with the life suport system, basicly the air it is creating for the piliots is getting mixed with Co2, Anti Freeze etc, The transmisions just before the F-22 Piliot crashed were of him sounding like he was drunk, which is a common sign of hipoxia. they don't know how it's happening, but it's not the first time it's happend in an Air craft :)
@StiviGun1 Fox 1 is code fora a SARH missile , so i suppose first one was AIM-7 Sparrow (They could use AIM-54 Phoenix missiles, but it was to close for them, Sparrow is way more agile missile, and as so more convinient for this situation) . Fox 2 is Infrared homing missile ,and I'm sure it was sidewinder :)
@ZeljkoKG87 OK, thanks a lot. I just wanted to know if the US pilots had the missile advantage over the Libyan pilots, but it was not the case, since the R-23 missiles their MiG-23s were armed with have the same range and performance.
@StiviGun1 Yes , but in this case Tomcats had an decisive advantage-altitude. This was head to head merge, US pilots were higher above the ground (higher then Lybians) and got the lock tone first ( higher altitude gives you greater range because the missile speeds up using two forces- gravity and engine thrust ).
@ZeljkoKG87 Yes, but that was because of pilots skill, not because of the Tomcat's technological superiority. The F-14 and the MiG-23 have about the same service ceiling.
@ZeljkoKG87 The Tomcats relinquished the altitude advantage early in the fight in order to get lower than the MiGs. This was done in effort to track and shoot the MiGs. By the time the engagement began the MiGs had the altitude advantage for several minutes.
@ZeljkoKG87 The Tomcats relinquished the altitude advantage early in the fight in order to get lower than the MiGs. This was done in effort to track and shoot the MiGs. By the time the engagement began the MiGs had the altitude advantage by 6,000 feet higher than the Tomcats for several minutes.
@ZeljkoKG87 The Tomcats relinquished the altitude advantage early in the fight in order to get lower than the MiGs. This was done in effort to track and shoot the MiGs. By the time the engagement began the MiGs had the altitude advantage by 4,000 feet higher than the Tomcats for several minutes.
Yeah statistically speaking guys....The F-14 has never been defeated in air to air combat or shot down by enemy missles. Also American pilots have a modern warfare win vs. loss ratio that dominates any country in the world by a very wide margin.... Thats how we do things...
Technically the migs were pulling into deflection so you could say the migs fired first.
But the F14's were the first to actually fire anything.
Air combat is very technical and most of the time fights are won or lost not by firing a shot, but by working with your wingman to put the enemy into a no win situation.
This situation however, the migs were acting very aggressive and they decided to take the gloves off.
Time and time again American made planes have proven to be better than Russian aircraft in countless confrontations. You may say whatever you like but not one f-15 has ever been shot down and how many Russian aircraft has it put down?
@yawn3333 All russian aircrafts involved in dogfights after WWII are owned by third world countries, It's not a matter of aircraft quality it's a matter of pilot skill and experience.
Rofl at rusbp and stalingrad, your both russians am i right? Even if it was f-22 vs mig-21 you would find a reason why f-22 would be inferior.. Well i dont think all stealth aircraft look a like, look at f-117 nighthawk and b-2 spirit. Pak Fa really looks like its an cheap rip off from f-22.
Wow...talk about a unfair fight! lol!! Gotta love the F-14!!

StiviGun1 1 year ago
@StiviGun1 Yes , but in this case Tomcats had an decisive advantage-altitude. This was head to head merge, US pilots were higher above the ground (higher then Lybians) and got the lock tone first ( higher altitude gives you greater range because the missile speeds up using two forces- gravity and engine thrust ).
ZeljkoKG87 1 year ago
@ZeljkoKG87 Yes, but that was because of pilots skill, not because of the Tomcat's technological superiority. The F-14 and the MiG-23 have about the same service ceiling.
StiviGun1 1 year ago
@ZeljkoKG87 The Tomcats relinquished the altitude advantage early in the fight in order to get lower than the MiGs. This was done in effort to track and shoot the MiGs. By the time the engagement began the MiGs had the altitude advantage for several minutes.

@ZeljkoKG87 sparrow is and was the only medium range missile the f14 could carry and fire
sidewinder is and was the only short range IR missile the us has till today
so guessing is not really guessing

@janssen70
F-14 could fire AIM-54 too. I said ' i suppose' because it's crazy to employ AIM-54 at these ranges.
ZeljkoKG87 11 months ago
@ZeljkoKG87 yeah but the phoenix is a long range missile and its not used against fighter aircraft its used primairly to intercept tactical bombers
janssen70 11 months ago
@janssen70 We're talking about the same thing but in a different way. I hope we'll meet somewhere in the middle :D

stupid american pilot..

Yeah statistically speaking guys....The F-14 has never been defeated in air to air combat or shot down by enemy missles. Also American pilots have a modern warfare win vs. loss ratio that dominates any country in the world by a very wide margin.... Thats how we do things...

its not about the Russian plane Its about noob Libyan pilots. Let the Russians handle this business. they know this very well
cruxader27 1 year ago
I think the outcome of this fight had more to do with the skill levels and training of the pilots than the superiority of the planes.
If the Americans had been in the Mig-23's and the Libyans were in F-14's, the Americans probably still would have won.

American planes beat russian planes ALL DAY. No chance!!!

so did the Tomcats get fired upon first, or was it the Floggers that got fired upon first?
MapleLeafAce 1 year ago
@MapleLeafAce
The first F14 rippled 2 Aim7's and a Heatseeker

Time and time again American made planes have proven to be better than Russian aircraft in countless confrontations. You may say whatever you like but not one f-15 has ever been shot down and how many Russian aircraft has it put down?
yawn3333 1 year ago
@yawn3333 All russian aircrafts involved in dogfights after WWII are owned by third world countries, It's not a matter of aircraft quality it's a matter of pilot skill and experience.

Rofl at rusbp and stalingrad, your both russians am i right? Even if it was f-22 vs mig-21 you would find a reason why f-22 would be inferior.. Well i dont think all stealth aircraft look a like, look at f-117 nighthawk and b-2 spirit. Pak Fa really looks like its an cheap rip off from f-22.
