As political junkie who tends to shy away from "cold-hard" political science, I found it difficult to make my way through this book at first. But, the weight of Bartel's arguments present such an effective, all-encompassing perspective into the relationship between the economy and political enfranchisement that only a fool would die before reading Unequal Democracy.
Larry Bartels book Unequal Democracy is filled with factual errors, misleading statements, logical fallacies, and at some points he just flat out lies
just cause you don't like the conclusions of the book doesn't mean its filled with factual errors, misleading statements, logical fallacies, or lies. Neoliberalism sucks, and the longer the nonelite class falls for it, the longer we will lead miserable lives.
@153dana I didn't like the conclusions because he used dishonesty to get to them....one simple example(note i sold the book, i read it for a class so I can't pinpoint the page #), when talking about inflation and unemployment he said that regean lowered inflation greatly at the cost of the greatest unemployment levels since the great depression.....this is true, but INCREDIBLY misleading because unemployment at the end of reagan's presidency was around 5%
Simple non-manipulated numbers rarely make it to the end user, in this case the voter. The current socio-political environment is one of sensationalism. The average voter has no desire to become self educated. They instead defer to the agenda driven media, (be it left or right) to manipulate their perspectives. It's a sad state of affairs when the voting public won't actively pursue independent source information such as the data presented in Larry Bartel's new book.
Yeah ... unfortunately so and I have noticed this general lack of interest from the American taxpayers at large.
In another website, I recently posted a lengthy message going over the current recession and the ongoing health care debate and how the Republican/right-wing version of macroeconomics are flawed.
One reply that I got said something like ... 'I'm sick and tired of another health care thread.'
Yeah ... I just do not find that many folks out there interested in self-study.

This book is a real trip.
Not often do number crunching statistics meet poignant critisism so effectively.
It was hard to put the book down.
