What the video doesn't mention is one of the other female paramedics from this same episode, Marlena Yomes, who also went on to become a flight medic for Hawaii Air Ambulance was also later killed in an air medical crash in Hawaii. They are both missed everyday
Relax people. Kayala died 10 years ago and at the time transporting prone was within protocol. If you took 2 min to google her name you would know this. Instead you choose to bash someone using your EMT basic chapter 3 knowledge. Ignorance is bliss. RIP kalaya
@jewishpinoy I think he's brave, but not a hero. That's also the government's fault, unless there was some war i missed out on which was impossible to avoid, and not fought for resources
for a patient like this, simply talking to them in a soothing voice may seem like a good idea to you- good luck not getting murdered in the back of an ambulance.
for someone who wants to know appropriate care for a patient like this, here it is. First, use PD, second, physical restraints should be properly applied, third, use chemical restraints if 1 or 2 dont work.
and by the way.. DO NOT EVER PUT A PERSON IN THE PRONE POSITION!!
@upstatemedic He wasnt calm enroute to the ER. She told her partner to stop the ambulance to assist her with a guy who should have been restrained in some way, the first place. What if he was hit by a car when he had to exit the truck at that time? What if the patient attacked or killed an ER staff member? She would lose her certification and be subject to serious criminal charges.
But what do i know? It sounds like i have run more calls in the past month than you ran in your carreer..
@m2inla Yeah i thought about the prone thing 2 but i guess since he didnt have breathing issues it was acceptable. And for the fact that he was a Psychiatric patient she did that. idk though. But ur right. The cop should handcuffed him and road with them. So ur a Paramedic urself?? im new at this. Im training 2 become an EMT-B

that kind of care has put people into cardiac arrest with a pt like that. it happened in my ems service about 15 years ago, because some genius hog tied a patient who had no significant Hx. he coded in the ambulance.

@david30918 If you do this for a living, you have to think ahead and not give a violent patient any benefit of the doubt. getting home alive at the end of a shift is the most important thing.

hi, is this how they deal with pts like that in the USA? as an ambo in australia - they can be restrained properly and even given an injection to allow them to sleep during transport... seem the usa is way behind the times..
@loudmouthspeaker you can sedate the pt it just depends on the local protocols every area is different. In fact the ems community in the United states has changed significantly in the past 10 years due to the war on terror and lessons learned over there. So please save the USA is way behind the times bs for somewhere else.
@Elleleila You can see that the guy had to sit on the pt and tie the guys hands to the stretcher with a roller bandage..... the pt could of gotten out if he really wanted and the lady in the back wouldnt of been able to stop him...
@loudmouthspeaker I work with animal patients, so I'd say on average my patients are much worse than this, and rarely do I need to resort to chemical restraint.
@loudmouthspeaker Again, it appears that everything worked out in the end. No one was injured & the man did not need sedation. Sedation definitely has its place, but it also comes with risks, especially when you don't know the person's previous health history or existing medical condition.
Kalaya loved helping people, she is the only genuinely altruistic person I have ever met. Most of us will spend our entire lives trying to accomplish the good things that she accomplished in a short time. On the rare occasion that you are blessed with someone like Kalaya, be sure to remind them of how much you love them on a daily basis. I've missed her so much! It's nice to hear her voice and see her face...thank you for posting this video.
She was a real gem to work with. I spent a month with her and Mitchell. She loved helping people. She was tough and sweet at the same time. Will look for some more material on her to post.
@andersonk12312 I'm sorry for her loss, she seems like she was a wonderful person. Its a shame to loose a loved one, especially someone like Kalaya. So brave, I would have not ridden in the back. So professional and caring. If I am ever in an emergency I hope I get a medic half as good as her. A true inspiration.
@andersonk12312 I never knew her as I'm just now seeing her for the first time here on this video, but I was a paramedic for some years at a very busy service. She seems to be all the complimentary things you folks who knew her and worked with her say she way. To me it's very important to have some good female medics. They can sure accomplish things that I'd have a hard time doing with/for the patient as well.
Yes you were a girl in an all guy world, doing what you loved to do, and now my Jaycee is continuing to do what you were not able to finish, she will graduate soon and become a Paramedic.
The medic did a great job with the patient, but patients should not be transported in the prone position. It restricts breathing and there have been many documented cases of patients that have gone into respiratory arrest due to the positioning. Often, they are associated with excited delerium.
It's medics like her who incite and inspire the passion and drive for all those who are or will be a Paramedic. I can only hope, once I finally become a medic, I'll become a portion of what Kalaya was.
Always treat your patient with the least invasive measures possible. Not sure if placing combative pt is accepted practice overall, but yes...sometimes it just takes a gentle voice/touch and the ability for pt to focus...can make all the difference in the world. RIP, Kalaya
shes awsome! i work in aged care and deal with these types of behavioural out bursts by patients all the time she did the right thing! gentle touch will calm them for sure!!!! well done!!
Mamasmann, PTSD is not reserved only for those who have been affected by the ravage of war. It is anything which has been so incredibly traumatic to a person that it has made effect on a person's psyche. It could be from a death to a relative, any sort of abuse, etc.. It can be as small as a facial tic or stutter (my father acquired this slight stutter from Vietnam) to incredibly violent and abusive people. Either way, it needs to be recognized, treated and sympathized with. It is hell.
man.. thats crazy.. while watching i was scared for her i thought the guy is gonna start swiinging..one point tho i dont get why they dont have any leather restraints on that guy???
being deployed. in fact a lot of guys did it this year before my husband's deployment to afghanistan. they fake illnesses and ptsd so much they make it hard for the people who actually have it. you'd be surprised what goes on at military bases behind closed doors. We fought my husbands Company about it, no one listens.
When he comes home he is going back to counseling...sigh.
youre an idiot. most everyone in the world has some form of ptsd. it doesnt just come from military.
Anyone who has experienced a traumatic event, gets this way at one time or another in their life. They might not make television, but believe me. My husband is military, he had ptsd before he joined and they diagnosed him with it here - before they deployed him. So don't just say military has it and don't pity them.
I am not saying this is guy is faking it, but some idiots do to get out of
aww thats sooo sad...RIP Kalaya Jurbsunthie... its so sad when cops, paramedics, and firefighters die on duty. they live to help people and its sad when they need help and cant be saved.
i am actually thinking of being a paramedic and first i so excited but when i started to do research on the field it started to scare me i dunno what to do last year in high school and it all comes to a decision
She seems VERY NICE may she rest in peace. I don't know why any medic with a reasonable mind will fly under current conditions (in some states). When I had to go into one (only a few times) there were less helos. Now, there are so many PRIVATE FOR PROFIT COMPANIES THAT DO AIR TRANSPORTS THAT A GROUND CREW COULD HANDLE! I would not want 2 work 4 a company that FORCED ME (aka threaten me with being fired) 2 fly someone totally stable so they can make a buck! WHAT A SHAME 2 LOOSE A GOOD MEDIC!
poor, troubled man. i feel for guys like this and we're only going to have many more cases like this with our troops returning from Iraq. it's a terribly sad thing to see. i worked with an ex soldier who bugged out and drove his UPS truck into the side of a macy's because he thought they were harboring terrorists.
wow this is really really sad. he says "we're in a chopper!" then "we're(or they're) going down!!!" and "if you got some problems, ill fly for ya" "we're in the jungle." he must of been a helicopter pilot in vietnam. war is hell.
I've worked in the field as an EMT for 7 years with many great Paramedics. This woman and her partner did an excellent job treating this patient and deescalating the situation. RIP
That's really too bad that God took her home, but I believe her job was done. That we learn how to be compassionate towards others when they are hurting. God Bless the Troops no matter what country you are fighting for . . .and the Medics who out of respect understand, because heck they are human too.
PTSD is the real deal, I see it often and it's very tragic. Rest in Peace Kalaya.

That chick is a bad medic. These are the things she did wrong:
Putting a patient in the prone position is bad care.
When you have a combative patient, sedate them with versed.
She should have had a police officer handcuff him and ride in the back- as he was clearly combative pta ems.

@Elleleila You can see that the guy had to sit on the pt and tie the guys hands to the stretcher with a roller bandage..... the pt could of gotten out if he really wanted and the lady in the back wouldnt of been able to stop him...
what ever happened to danger first....
loudmouthspeaker 1 year ago
@Elleleila and how many pts have you had to treat like this?
loudmouthspeaker 1 year ago
@loudmouthspeaker I work with animal patients, so I'd say on average my patients are much worse than this, and rarely do I need to resort to chemical restraint.
Elleleila 1 year ago
@Elleleila so why isnt the pt secured with proper restraints... i dont see roller bangdages as a safe option do you...not a safe work practice
loudmouthspeaker 1 year ago
@loudmouthspeaker Again, it appears that everything worked out in the end. No one was injured & the man did not need sedation. Sedation definitely has its place, but it also comes with risks, especially when you don't know the person's previous health history or existing medical condition.

nice work trying to "restrain" the patient never transport prone, they get out easier that way. transport with PD if you think your in danger.

@andersonk12312 I'm an EMT-B, I understand everything your saying...I was wondering what happened to Kalaya?
Helcomlatly 1 year ago
@andersonk12312 I'm sorry for her loss, she seems like she was a wonderful person. Its a shame to loose a loved one, especially someone like Kalaya. So brave, I would have not ridden in the back. So professional and caring. If I am ever in an emergency I hope I get a medic half as good as her. A true inspiration.
jasaenz2 1 year ago
@andersonk12312 I never knew her as I'm just now seeing her for the first time here on this video, but I was a paramedic for some years at a very busy service. She seems to be all the complimentary things you folks who knew her and worked with her say she way. To me it's very important to have some good female medics. They can sure accomplish things that I'd have a hard time doing with/for the patient as well.

Kayala You Rock!!!!!!!
You went out there and did it!!!!
Yes you were a girl in an all guy world, doing what you loved to do, and now my Jaycee is continuing to do what you were not able to finish, she will graduate soon and become a Paramedic.
jranderson2269ja 2 years ago

RIP, Kalaya

mamasmann 2 years ago
Mamasmann, PTSD is not reserved only for those who have been affected by the ravage of war. It is anything which has been so incredibly traumatic to a person that it has made effect on a person's psyche. It could be from a death to a relative, any sort of abuse, etc.. It can be as small as a facial tic or stutter (my father acquired this slight stutter from Vietnam) to incredibly violent and abusive people. Either way, it needs to be recognized, treated and sympathized with. It is hell.

being deployed. in fact a lot of guys did it this year before my husband's deployment to afghanistan. they fake illnesses and ptsd so much they make it hard for the people who actually have it. you'd be surprised what goes on at military bases behind closed doors. We fought my husbands Company about it, no one listens.
When he comes home he is going back to counseling...sigh.
themysticknight 2 years ago
Wow. I sympathize with your situation and don't doubt what you say.
SmartX 2 years ago
youre an idiot. most everyone in the world has some form of ptsd. it doesnt just come from military.

That's really too bad that God took her home, but I believe her job was done. That we learn how to be compassionate towards others when they are hurting. God Bless the Troops no matter what country you are fighting for . . .and the Medics who out of respect understand, because heck they are human too.
