Dear BernadetteSL, According to "The Biography"TV Tribute to "The Von Trapp Family"..Baroness Maria Kutcherer Von Trapp was not a nice person..she was known to be loud and angry and she took her anger out on Capt.Georg Von Trapp.She also forced her step kids to remain with the singing group and work on the ski lodge and have no outside relationships.

@immahershlag yes, the old lady is the REAL Maria Von Trapp. I've read the book too, it's worth a read, it's lovely, different to the movie, the didn't escape over the mountains, they caught the train out in real ilife.

Many extremely religiously-devout people, especially those that become abruptly impoverished refugees, become tyrants to many. If WE had lived the FULL life of Maria Von Trappe, I doubt that any of us would be as kind/loving/wise/responsible as we know how to be NOW! I ended up on a tv show out of Boston back in 1983 (on location at The Stowe VT. hotel) and met her a few times. She was a strong woman both mentally and physically (features). But she was very nice even when one of the TV guest ran a steak knife through my "lemon bar trick" into her newly built bar at the hotel. Caught on film but Channel 5 threw out all the old tapes!!

@WillScarlet16 - i think GOD had designed the real maria von trapp to be a strongly-charactered woman in order to drive the family to perfection. it was GOD's will that she attended to georg's 7 children; it was not a rose garden. GOD didnt want a wimp. at the time they moved to america, they lost almost everything because of the war. and maria von trapp had to drive the children to sing beautiful songs so that they would have income. she inspired the children to sing beautifully.
