You got a point too Per. :-) And there's one interpretation that the America the world once looked up to as true liberators of the first and the second world wars has now become something else. And the context of Willie's song is that the people in power at the moment took away that high favourable regard by creating war in Iraq specifically. Hence 'we' need to take the steering wheel back so we can drive America towards greatness the right way again etc.
