Lending would’ve been financed either by deposits or by borrowing against deposits, bank-owned assets or expected returns, NOT out of thin air. I agree with you that if an institution is to be bailed out, it should have its transactions on its balance sheet, & that it should be upfront with people about what sort of contract they are getting into. But, there's nothing wrong with those transactions & it would have all worked had those people paid back those loans & loan requirements were relaxed.
