New video would come, if I had some good footage and time. School's coming into the mix and since I'm playing in a clan, I don't have much time to fly around in public servers that much than in the beta. Tournaments, etc. take priority, and I can't record them due to rules or I don't want to risk my effectiveness due to recording eating my comp power = lower FPS = not good.

If people are fine with Jet/tank gameplay, video'll come sooner. Chopper has taken a back seat lately.. Sorry.

Flying hellicopters is my favorite part of bf3! For anyone who wants to learn.. just practice in the second co-op mission. Hardest part to master for people is staying stationary and reversing in mid air cause your blind. Don't reverse too dramatically at first.

The mechanics of a helicopter is the rotors chop the air and push it downward to achieve lift. The higher you fly the less lift you achieve due to the fact the air is pushing on more air to make lift and as you go higher the air becomes thinner.

However, when you fly extremely low to the ground, the air chopped by the rotors has the ground to push off of accounting for an exponential increase in speed and lift.

I assume BF3 follows these mechanics to keep a realism aspect.

The cyclic on a (real) helicopter adjusts the pitch of the blades (through the swash-plate) and controls the "power" while the collective controls the overall pitch of the helicopter (nose up/down yaw left n' right) but you are correct about helos generating more lift at a lower altitude, or whenever they are against a solid object like a roof or the side of a mountain. They also generate more lift in the cold vs hot.

BF3 helicopters fly more like a plane on a string though.

The cyclic does, in fact, control the pitch of the rotor blades through the swash plate, however it only controls the pitch at a certain point in the rotor disc, resulting in yaw etc. The collective is what controls the overall pitch of every rotor blade, or the "power" as you referred to it.

@One5hot45 Actually a helicopter uses the same principle as planes (the shape of the wing creates low pressure above the wing and high below, creating a suction pulling the wing up). It's just that a plane moves the entire aircraft to get air to flow over the wing and a helicopter moves the wing instead. Although what you said about height is still true.

@Mrcreations515 Hm yeah, it also seems to have something to do with how you start your flight. I tried gaining some altitude and then tipping over to get some high initial velocity and then you can kind of keep that velocity with the right angle.

@GammahooX The closer you are to the ground, the faster your heli appears to move. You can also notice that throughout flight, he fluctuates (very subtly) between having his nose pointing at the ground and straight ahead. That fluctuation increases speed up to a certain point. The rest is just his building up momentum and maintaining it.

You won't achieve movement as fast as him since they reduced it slightly for the actual game release, but you'll get close.  Been there, done that.
