  • In spite of the change to his face from his car accident injuries he is still handsome. He still exudes a certain kindness and gentleness too. You can see it in his eyes.

  • Strange thing when some people said that someone was the most "sexiest". Whats the relation beetwen sex and talent ?

    Bizarre....

  • a troubled soul rip

  • bald spot! monty was human!

  • He is so handsome!!!!

  • "Freud" was wonderful - Marilyn Monroe wanted to play opposite Clift in this film, but her analyst thought it might well destroy her (in reaching into the darkest places of her existence). Monroe loved Montgomery Clift and never forgot the kindness and great talent of her "Misfits" co-star.

  • Accident or not, Mr Clift was THE sexiest & one of the most talented actors ever!

  • Greatest of all time, forget Brando and that other loser Dean, they just copied his acting style and took credit for it

  • It would've been nice to hear Clift speak. I did like hearing Cerf pronounce "Los Angeles" with a hard "g." I'm always wondering when that was overtaken by the English soft "g."

  • Shit, you can recognize his voice from his Mm-hms and uh-uhs.

  • Actually he was NOT bisexual, he was completely gay. His brother said he was "homosexual," Elizabeth said the same. Monty was only interested in men. And why should it matter anyway?

  • I think I would have lost my shit if Monty Clift had been that close to me.

  • Mr. Clift never discussed his sex life in press interviews or on "What's My Line?". The only publication that could have published anything about it during his lifetime was Confidential. It chose not to. The man was admired for his artistic talent, not for his contributions to tell-all books that were published many years after his death. Ms. Taylor thought her co-star / friend was talented. She was a smart lady and was horrified by the increase in gossip about dead people's sex lives.

  • @giuraesuda One thing I truly despise about "entertainment" today is how everyone seems to feel somehow entitled to know about and discuss the sexual lives of stars. Why can't they just be human beings who happen to act, and not have their personal and private lives dissected at every turn?

  • oh my God....I absolutely adore him....

  • He still looks pretty good to me.

  • "Encomium"- I've just learned another new word from the uber-intelligent John C. Daly. Love when he uses such high-falutin' language!

  • Monty Clift was such an incredible actor and such a tragic sole!

  • This was a very sad and low point in Monty s life sadly he would be dead just one year later, a genius and so talented, nothing or nobody like him today.

  • @mickeyh1961 I think Monty himself gave his own best epitaph: "What the hell have I gotta do to convince people I can act?"

  • Monty - what a genuine sweet humble man he was - a worldwide star and no flash celebrity cr.p, look at how he shakes hands with the public, wow

  • Was that bald spot a result from the accident, too?

  • "The Los Angle us Times"? - W T F !

  • Was such a handsome man and so talented yet was another mega star whose life was so tragic! More so because of what the studio system did to him (ie....Judy Garland). Had he lived beyond his depression, who knows if he would have been able to stave off the "sex appeal" that he shared with Rock Hudson....but noticed that here, when walking in, was already balding terribly (least of his personal problems but major for the studio). Gave us great films but was so sad, so tragically sad! RIP!

  • he was quite sick here -

  • @anthonynewsome Yes, and you can tell that John Daly and the panel were filling in with conversation at the end to spare him.

  • @xander7ful I Confess is perhaps my fave movie of all time - MC was sublime - but injury drink & prescription drug got the better of him -

  • montyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

  • What an incredible actor he was. Just unparalleled.

  • @audrettajones Spoken like a classless moron.

  • I wish I lived in this time; I'd scream everytime I saw a signature

  • Imagine if Cary Grant or Clark Gable or Stewart Granger had suffered the same fate as Monty, being in a car accident that caused damage to the face and it required plastic surgery, which ended up changing his career?...It must have caused great pain to Monty to have lost some his looks because of the car accident.

  • @pagalley1 whoops didn't mean to vote down your comment, anyways, not just that! But after that he was in great pain, poor darling. <3

  • @pagalley1 I think the car accident may have been an early symptom of his problems rather than a contributing cause.

  • @Kenmorfdublin Yes, but no doubt the accident made whatever problems he had before, worse, because he lost the one thing he could always rely on, both on and off camera, his looks.

  • YOUR LOOKING AT ONE OF FOUR OF THE GREATEST ACTORS WHO EVER LIVED. MONTY, MARLON, JAMES & JUAQUIN.

HE ONLY APPEARED FOR A SHORT TIME IN "J.A.N.", AND WAS SO ASTOUNDING AND PITIFUL. IT CONTINUES TO HAUNT ME IN MY MEMORY OF HIM. WHAT AN ARTIST. EVEN MORE AMAZING, FOR MANY YEARS HE WAS SUFFERING FROM MANY DEMONS IN HIS LIFE. AS STANLEY WAS SHOOTING THIS SCENE, MONTY COULD NOT GET THE LINES CORRECT.

HE WAS GIVEN PERMISSION TO AD-LID AND CREATED A MASTERPIECE. ONE OF THE GREATEST SCENES EVER.

  • Monty got a raw deal! Drug abuse, anti-gay era, personal issues

contributed to a tragic waste for such a talented actor. Gone but

very much alive in the history of cinema.

  • Monty didn't look quite as handsome as he used to, after the car accident, but that's life, very unpredictable...Monty died young and James Dean died young, 45 and 24, respectively...Two wonderful talents cut down in the prime of their lives...Today's Hollywood stars should learn from the mistakes made by Monty and James and modern day stars like River Phoenix and Heath Ledger, who died at 23 and 29, respectively...Denzel Washington and Tom Hanks are two of today's stars who should be emulated.

  • I think Mark Harmon would be an excellent choice to play Montgomery Clift...He bears a striking resemblance to him.

  • they should do a movie of his life and have 'Jack' from Dawson's Creek play him - he looks very much like the young Monty.

  • I think I'd piss myself

  • Los Angle-less Times? DId people really pronounce it like that back then?

  • Monty, that was NOT a signature...

  • as if anyone cares that the host has been on the road lately all we care about is monty!

  • drunken writing...

  • Was he losing hair?

  • I never knew that David Starkey was a panellist on What's My Line?

  • One of the great gay men of all time. Too bad he lived in a time where it ws such an issue.

  • @Faygelah true

  • @Faygelah bisexual. confirmed by his brother and elizabeth taylor.

  • Think he was ...?

  • Comment removed

  • Clift, I believe, lived in NYC at the time. I know he died at his home there, four years later.

  • @librarybob1958

    one year later

  • @librarybob1958

sorry, 3, he died in 66

  • Don't hear the word "encomium" on TV nowadays ...

  • @Vitte4 Seems like you don't hear a word of more than two syllables in ANY entertainment medium, these days, movies or TV.

Call it the Dumbing-Down of America.

  • Thanx for posting monty was still monty the dam accident changed his looks but he was still monty with the same beautiful heart the talent and that one of a kind smile .Monty we all still love you

  • Saddens me....you can tell Montgomery was just not too high on life :(...what an actor, what a guy! What if that accident didnt happen?!

  • Chinema, LosAgle-ess, even the WML panel could descend to boobery at times (EXCEPT OF COURSE FOR ARLENE), and yes, I agree, why didn't they shut shut up and let Monty have a moment?

  • It would have been nice if they would have shut up and let him get a word in edge-wise!

  • Monty looks drawn and tired...

  • they got everyone on this show! haha which makes this show unique and special because they had so many stars and they all wanted to come and do the show!

  • i LOVE montgomery clift!!!

  • 2:12 so cute!

  • Poor Monty. He really was never the same after his accident and you can see John and the panel trying to fill the air time for him, which was so thoughtful of them.

  • 1963...so this was AFTER the accident? He looks older, and kinda haggard (as someone mentioned probably the booze & pills), but surely not UGLY... Why was he so hard on himself. :(

  • The sad truth is that Clift's behavior during the filming of Freud made him unbankable from 63 until his run through film Defector (a demonstrator intended by him to prove he could do Reflections in Golden Eye) in 66, I think the only work he got was recording a Glass Menagerie album for Caedman. Anyone know if I'm wrong, that is, did MC do ANY other work from 63 to 66?

  • @spagandtuna No, you're absolutely correct. Sad as it is, Monty's only work after Freud was indeed The Defector. In spite of intense lobbying on his behalf by friends like Liz Taylor, you're right, he was simply "uninsurable." Hollywood wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole.

  • @kitpackard Yeah, and it was probably for the best. He was probably a late stage alcoholic at the time. I can't imagine what type of role would have been appropriate for him (no way leading man) and Reflections cut too close to reality, one of which he was at least publicly in denial....actually, I thought Brando did a good job in that.

  • hell of an actor!

  • well...a face smash from a car crash would cause maybe some of the pain...now-a-days he might've been enrolled in some pain management/rehab......but back then nobody admitted to ANYTHING...I really like Monty as an actor but that doesn't mean I'm gay...can't I just like the man for what he's done?

  • @SolarTiger Actually, Monty was in regular therapy at the time of this appearance ... VERY regular. The therapy, obviously, wasn't working. Oh, you simply MUST read Patricia Boswell's biography of him because it goes into detail about the complicated situation surrounding his analysis! It's kinda pricey to buy, but it's EVER so worth it! :)

I absolutely love this clip, thanks for posting!

  • Bennett pronounces Los Angeles with a hard "g" the old pronunciation.

  • Its so sad to see Monty after the car crash

  • Oh he couldve made that more fun, I'm sure!

  • His face was never quite the same after his car accident!

  • this is a weak WML. clift could've made it more fun with his talent.

  • the booze and pills were already showing on his face.

  • @BlackenedForLife I wouldn't nessary say that.

  • @BlackenedForLife The only thing showing on Montgomery Clift's face is - Car Crash.

  • It did him unfortunately. IT took a toll on his face, his self-esteem and escalated his drug and alcohol use. Being gay at that time was also a bit of a hangnail on his career.

  • @mgoos9

I just wrote my cousin that Monty lost his lovely facial angles and softness due to the car wreck and many subsequent surgeries. You said it in fewer words...thanks!

  • @VTMCompany call, me weird or sick but i think that it actually added something to his face. A maturity i guess. I thought he was always too pretty before the accident. Somthing like Tom Cruise.

  • @auntbecky - you're weird or sick. :)

  • Thank you so much, for this video :)

  • Thanks for posting this - I didn't know it existed before. Good to see Monty relaxed [but not too relaxed!] and enjoying himself. I don't think his bald patch has ever appeared on screen before or since?

  • Bennett pronounces Los Angeles with a hard "g". Odd.

  • @wmlfan9

Dorothy's pronunciation of "cinema" was also a bit odd.

  • True, but I got the impression that she was deliberately giving it a cute Italian pronunciation, especially after both Bennett and John had prnounced it correctly.

  • THANK YOU!! I adore Monty!!

  • Fascinating fellow, gifted performer. Thanks very much.

  • Bless you for this! I have been searching online for this video! Thank you so much!

  • What a nice treat. One of my favourite actors, and a person who never did tv interviews or appearances, with one or two exceptions.

  • Monty didn't seem to give a you-know-what about the newspaper strike conversation.

It is also not fair to bring in someone too easy to figure out based on their recent workage.
