Madeleine: Thanks for telling the truth about SatC. Especially its affirmation of "someday my prince will come." The commercial culture that created SatC has turned love and sex into economic acts for personal aggrandizement. The polluted narratives of SatC and Rom-Coms corrupt our collective consciousness until we believe we are living on a soundstage. The sorry truth is, many of us are aging, ugly, and poor. We stand no chance in such a sick fantasy!
Great comments. Congratulations for carefully justifying your interesting viewpoints. Hopefully this video will make some fan reconsider what this show is about. Well done.
I HATE sex and the city.. teaching young women that going around fucking every man who looks at you like a desperate slut is GOOD.. that materialism and no sexually morality is GOOD.. but marriage is bad and kids are awful.
i think most "real" feminists have a problem with this film garbage. it's sending out a lot of negative messages to women and about women. binary garbage--women buying clothes and shoes to attract "mr big"--submission to the dictates and desires of the alpha male. stupid women portraying stupid women. epic fail to whomever had creative control of this rotten tomato/es (prolly the man--mr big himself)
I dislike the show quite a bit. I'm a guy, but if it's an accurate portrayal of women, I think it's very scary. Fortunately my girlfriend isn't like that. It reminds me of high school where being trendy, materialistic, and shallow was more cool than just being yourself like University and beyond. I also find the women to be incredibly unattractive in spite of being fairly good looking physically, their characters just repulse me and seem so stereotypical and one-dimensional that I can't help
I used to love Sex & The City because it truly is an accurate portrayal of men and women and romantic relationships. Then I slowly began to hate Sex & The City because it truly is an accurate portrayal of men and women and romantic relationships! I agree with you 1000%. The show glorifies the vapid and the shallow and the mundane. Then the people who love the show and "relate" to it wonder why their lives are so empty! RISE ABOVE these hollow experiences - don't revel in a kinship with them!
DEAR Madeleine, I would give you ten stars if I could. Your comments reflect the views that most men have about the program and our frustration with vapid, narciscistic (NPD/Malignant) materialistic, hyper-critical women with absolutely no self awareness.
Real sexual liberation, is about truly truly being comfortable with who you are and the choices you make, Youve just contradicted yourself because you are not allowing her to be comfortable with who she is (a woman who likes casual sex), and the choices she makes (having sex and buying shoes). Youre basically dictating other womens behaviour and scorning them as having no self-esteem if they dont behave how you want them to.
Well if there's a happy medium between abstinence and promiscuity, I don't want it. Abstinence is extreme. Abstinence is hardcore. It ain't no joke, and that's where it's at.
What's actually wrong with defining your self-esteem based on your relationships (or lack there of) with the opposite sex, amongst other things?
Dont you think that if everyone were happy without those relationships, no one would bother getting together? No sex = No more human race. Thats why we are programmed to not just want the opposite sex, but to want a good quality specimen as well.
Pyschiatry's attitude and toward and wording of self esteem is indeed a crock, and nature cares not for suffering as long as that species sucessfuly reproduces and creates viable offspring. However I wouldn't say happyness isn't important, happyness is what we strive towards, what we want and what we need.
This is a really intuitive and thoughtful viewpoint. It is a depressing fact that these models of "womanhood" are emulated - leaving little but a trail of emptiness. If men are supposedley the goal, what kind of self respecting guy would find any of these central characters remotely attractive?! This programme says "its ok and normal to be a complete screw up materialistic self obsessesive; men will still love you!" Errr, no, they won't! They will RUN! (if they have half a brain).
wow......marry me.....YOU are truly a modern woman. This video should be broadcast to every women in the western world. And what many women here seem to mistake is that it is "just a show". They could not be more wrong, people REALLY do emulate celebrities and the like. In my humble opinion that show has created a generation of shallow, materialistic women just as you have described.
I did take a different view on SaTC after this video and a lot of what you said is true. You picked up on the sterotypes very well. I still love SaTC though, no changing that. No reason to hate it!
whether you like it or not, these "women" ARE already intended to be role models. Sadly, they are what our market-economy-driven media wants them to aspire to,despite a blatent lack of substance. Historically, Women have been the more socially constructed gender. Generally speaking (NO OFFENSE), few women can actually move outside of societal constraints to think for themselves. This show has worsened this, and has confused both male and female both as to what their valuable assets truly are.
I'm not the one implying that these characters are role models. The many many many women who openly admit to finding these characters inspirational and model their lives after do. This show is widely acclaimed as a powerful feminist statement, that is what I take offense to. If people watched the show with the same guilty pleasure as watching say, Jerry Springer... fine, I wouldn't be bothered to comment. But they don't, millions of women watch this show as if it represented the ultimate ideal.
You have way too much time on your hands. This is a freakin T.V show that's for pure entertainment. I don't understand why people take this so seriously. I never thought this show was about in powering women. To me Sex And The City, is a story about female friendships and what they experience with men. If Sex And The City was a serious show it would have never lasted for 8 years.
I think you're very right. It not meant to be a serious show from the beginning. It's not about telling you what you should be. The main dish of this show AND the movie is about friendship. The show was about finding love. falling in love, falling out of love, loving the wrong people, making mistakes, and most of all it was the friendship of those woman. If you never bothered to find out exactly what it is you can't just assume it's what it is by the title.
I watched the series, watched the movie. I haven't changed one bit, if I have to choose something then all I've really changed is to be more appreciative of the supportive people around me during alll my hard times.
5513011 - Why would you be so rude? Why? The worst part of men is that they can separate pleasure and love - And there's nth wrong with that. And when a woman does that, it makes them a slut? Double standard. Anyone?
I have watched every single episode, just so that I couldn't be accused of not knowing what I was talking about.
I didn't get the impression that these women genuinely cared about each other. Their conversations were unnatural and their interest in each other was superficial.
When you describe Samantha, you talked about real sexual liberation is being comfortable of who you are, and the choices you make. I think she has no problem being comfortable of who she is, and the choices she make. She is clear and forward about her desires of continuously seeking sexual pleasure and very comfortable in being who she is. Then, she was labeled as a slut when she infact did follow your definition of "real sexual liberation".
I'm not into the idea of debating on every character, perhaps it's just a difference in opinion, it's fine. It's not like I work for HBO or something. But it's thrilling to think you hate this so much and you managed to watch every single episode. Why would you do that though since you hated it? Or you continued on so you can take notes and make a review out of it?
What really kept me watching the series was the bonding of these woman. I didn't get why you didn't get the impression that these women didn't genuinely cared for each other. Friends fight, they argue, it doesn't mean they don't care.
After watching the series the only thing that managed to stick to my mind were the touching moments of connection of these women; carrie's 35th birthday when they talked about soul mates, Miranda's wedding slash Samantha's breast cancer, how Charlotte was able to put aside "her style" and gave miranda a miranda-style baby shower.. etc. Oh dear. I think it's pretty genuine.
Fantastic points! I agree completely. And also, what makes it worse is these women are in their 30s and now--40s!!!! Way too immature. I'm so glad you brought up the fact that Carrie is absurdly selfish. But I will be seeing the movie. It's my guilty pleasure. And you do kinda remind me of Miranda...sorry! ;)
And yet, I don't chew with my mouth open, don't blame men for my struggle up the career ladder, don't proclaim that I can't get a date because men are threatened by my success...
All tiny nuances in a very well written character. Overarching theme of the video was very Mirandaesque. Don't get me wrong however the character of Miranda annoys me greatly, especially the chewing with the mouth open and general picking at every little thing when it's never needed (hence why the video annoyed me). The movie was great by the way.

Yes they exist, but there are massive societal pressures on women to not admit such things.

@TruthBeyond i know they exist, i know them, it just that they probably won't like it from age 15 to 60, they eventually get exhausted by 40.

Self esteem is a crock and happiness is irrelevant. Should Eeyore be eliminated from the Pooh books because he was so negative all the time? Heck no.

Eeyore is a fictional character or an inanimate object. Granted, stories don't always have to have happy endings or even happy characters.

So you don't think anyone in life is like Eeyore, and if so, those that are are wrong for being like him?

Eeyore is one of Winnie The Pooh's best friends. That alone validates his character.
