Scotto has been my ideal Butterfly since I first saw her do it with Aragall at the Met in 1976. I realized then that the part is written for an Italian verismo singing actress, and not at all for an Oriental, which seems to be so popular nowadays. Also was blessed to see her Met farewell as Butterfly with Domingo in 1986. Great great artist and lady.
I really do not see what race has to do with one's suitability for a role, although being an Italian certainly helps with the pronunciation and one must understand the tradition Butterfly was created in. But yes, Scotto is my ideal Butterfly, along with de los Angeles.
humankind deserves a chance, despite all...for we blossom, even for a little while thanks to this genius..puccini can fill your soul with magic like no other
The version with Maria Callas and Nicolai Gedda is also a wonderful rendition of this love duet. In my opinion the Butterfly of Callas is more subtle, but Scotto is also very good. Victoria de los Angeles was also a touching Cio-Cio-San.
Indeed, I'd pick de los Angeles and Scotto as my favorite Butterflies, although that Callas recording is surprisingly good, and easily in the top three or four. The phrasing of the love duet is very tender.
This is the most beautiful love duet of the entire operaproduction (according to me of course !) I've seen at least 150 performances (even in Torre del Lago where Puccini lived) and eveytime I've tears in my eys, same with Mimi or Manon : and I was not always an old fool.
@raydebouvre Im not so sure this is the best interpretation. Have you ever heard the maria callas version?? for me thats the best interpretation i`ve ever heard. Download it at ares
