There is one line of wisdom repeated in this song that is the most uplifting positive piece of advice for all people. "Hold On To What You Got". No matter how little you may have, hold onto it for life and be lucky you have it.
"Video not so good, but such a great song." Well, you got it half right. The song is among my Top 5 ever non-instrumentals...wicked guitar, bitchin' sax, great lyrics and outstanding vocals. As for the video: IT'S A GAS! Whoever came up with this video did a magnificent job of matching the action clips to the lyrics. I'm ROFLMAO!!!!
I love this song ... from the strummy guitar to the sophisticated baseline. It has such a freespirited feel that takes my mind off of any worries in the world. Oddly it is slightly melancholy while being so uplifting.
there is an actual video of this band playing the studio track with all the members. i remember, because the bass player looks like paul davis. this bass line is superb. you won't hear playing like this is a current radio band.
It's a wonder it ever made it into the US top twenty singles chart in 1979 with this amount of video promotion from the UK record label in 1978. Perhaps it was a hit because it was a fookin good song written and sung by a fookin good singer! You could always just close your eyes and listen to it?

I've always loved this song. It's underrated and underplayed. I try to play it to as many people as I can, to get them to be fans as well.

Ian Gomm also co-wrote the Nick Lowe hit "Cruel To Be Kind" with him, as they were both members of the group Brinsley Schwarz in the early 70's.

1979 seems to have been a year for such diversity, musically. The doors were really open then.
This song has it all, which is why it was a hit. The vocals are a dead ringer for Nick Lowe, who also hit the top 20 in 1979.
