This reply is a long time coming like, but apparently the song was written after an article in Melody Maker where Jane Crockford said they were crap, it was just a silly song to get back at her. And no, they weren't butch. Apparently a lot of the slagging they got back then was all because they were "too cute"!

Dolly Mixture were sooo fantastic!!!
I remember arranging a C86 20th anniversary party with a friend, when I had to leave the turntable, once I played this song, to jump onto the dancefloor (though I usually hate dancing).
