Heroes 4 is quite nice. it"s story and you also have alot to learn from it..I one liked it...givse you some ideas about things.And the castle could do with some changing
I really enjoyed 5. I spent a lot of hours on that game. But I tried the demo of 6 and couldn't stand it. I'm not sure if it's just me or if the game is actually any worse or different.
Sure, you can live in the past claiming you were robbed of your childhood, but the fact of the matter is that new games are created solely for the purpose, aside from making money and continuing the saga, of enhancing gameplay.
Say what you want, play what you want, but the fact remains that Heroes V has better controls and playability in terms of balance issues that previous series lacked.
Believe me, Heroes III was freakin' awesome, but things change.
indeed! the problem is that H3 was a milestone, simply a masterpiece. i really love H4, i also enjoy to play H5! but it is like a unwritten law: if one part is more than great, the next parts are doomed to "suck"! Also Heroes 6 has the potential to be the best ever - with lots of patches and some expansions. I'm not kidding. The changes they did fit so well i don't regret them.
What they need to change : fix bug, fix balance (necro OP, inferno sucks), make simultaneous turn, blood & tear for every hero and that's it. Optional : town screen.
did they fix the "Using Guardian Angel on your only stack of creatures when you are fighting the AI causes the AI to retreat" bug? I still have demo version... i'm not gonna buy the real version if that and pressing "D" as necromancer on a single stack of ghosts = win every single battle.

HOMM 3 is so unbalanced...It needs fixing some things (i'm talking about the In The Wake Of Gods patch btw) like the race conflux,some items(getting a certain items makes you indestructable),getting certain spell also helps for that...I win every game on HOMM 3 because of that.
Heroes 6 sucks imo,i don't like how they simplified it so much.HOMM 5 is my favorite so far.

@PifchoBG Heroes III was artistically the most beautiful one, yes, but in terms of gameplay, you have to admit that 5 and especially 4 provided lots marvellous ideas to keep the gameplay fresh. While H3 is pretty much the only flawless one in the series, they're all worth playing. My personal favourite is H4 for the awesome campaigns, the remade skills, the unbelievable music (probably my favourite soundtrack for any game) and the immense strategic flexibility.

If you want to play HOMM3, you can always create your own maps or randomise them. Heroes V and VI have their own qualities, and if you're not satisfied with the changes, go back to HOMM3 and keep quiet.
I hope they bring back the Devil in Heroes VI. They kept the Angel, why not the the Devil? Also, they need to make lots of neutral creatures. So far, HOMM 3 still hold the record for having the most neutral creatures.
People, stop whining about "ohhh I want new Heroes 3 with new graphics etc"... Is there any reason to make second 3rd Heroes if they already exists? Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge homm3 fan for ten fuckin' years and I love this game, but new one is also good. If you haven't played it yet for any reason, just download the demo and play. You will not be dissapointed (of course if you are not too conservative)

Starting from squared battleground and ending with all the rest. I agree heroes 3 should been remade just as kings bounty was remade as kings bounty - the legend armored princess crossworlds. You want to see real nice battleground and animations? Play kings bounty i mentioned here. Then tell us what you thing of Heroes 5 and 6.
@qaerkyr Agreed. Battlegrounds looks like shit, but this is not the main aspect of the Heroes which we love. I mean, when you play chess you care about how chess-board looks like? I don't. Same here. Yes, last games of the series looks like they was made for children, but it's still a strategy, where you play with your head, not hands. It's not like nowadays shooters or other staff - it's still better. But nobody won't remade Heroes 3, of course if NWC wouldn't get the rights to the series back.

Some of the coolest features were in your own town, where you could clearly see a development in the city, and it felt like your own. When an enemy came to capture it, you stood by your main town to the death. It seems some of the fun of creating your own town has perished by over-development, as well as moving adventuring forth in the adventure which in most cases were a Random map. They should COPY HOMM3 and just enhance graphics. HOMM3 was genious, and I still play it.
@texasSsplit I fully agree to it, but do you really want to play again and again the same system? In my opininon the HoMM 3 was the best part, but only making graphics better wouldn't help. More creatures, items, heroes, spells, and larger maps or even the world domination system would be awesome. Plus i think larger battlefields and more like heroes 5 would be better. I dislike just one thing. The recreate the same system each time making worse. They should upgrade HoMM 3.
I've actually played the Beta. I thought the game was actually very good. They may have made adjustments that might alienate long time fans of the series. But this seems like a solid strategy game for sure. I am looking forward to the next Beta Phase (8/16) and the Release (9/8).
This game deserves to be judged on its own terms. Lets cut it out with the "OMG HOMM3 roxxers!" and the "OMG 4 resorces" comments.
I liked heroes 4, it's map editor was more precise than the 3's and the campaigns were interesting. I think it's greatest fail (beside of the lack of upgradeable dwellings) is that the heroes could become a one person army (especially in the campaigns).
Looks great, but I wish when you enter a town it goes full screen. There's a whole atmosphere in all the heroes games when you enter a town, for instance, the rampart in heroes III, its full screen and there's pleasant music and fantastic scenery. This heroes game has murdered that aspect.
@Kaladraz Heroes 5 wasn't a bad game, I didn't like the squares they are obviously sticking with nor the artstyle, it's all happy and standard fantasy. Which actually doesn't go well with the HoMM style.

@axkaan HoMM 1-4 wasn't done by 3DO, they were done (and created) by New World Computing, 3DO was just the publisher (except for HoMM 1 which 3DO hadn't bought NWC yet). If you want to place blame on why NWC doesn't exist anymore than point your finger at 3DO.
I seriously think HOMM 3 is the best in the series. The new ones are made to look like Warcraft. 3DO should have kept on going and not trade with Ubisoft. I still have the HOMM 3 Expansion Pack with all three chapters and its the only game I ever play.
Yeah 3 is my favorite but 5 is actually really good. There are some things (initiative system, atb bar, indicator of number of kills, movement grids for opponents etc.) that don't add more content, but make the game so much more convenient. Heroes 4 is not so horrible either tbh. It is horrible the first 15 minutes, but if you stay a while it actually becomes really enjoyable. I love the hero and unit system there, as well as the growth system
The crappy art direction and the absence of town visualisation prove, without even looking at the rest, that they didn't give a damn about the universe and roleplay aspect of the game, as well as the respect of the series. And then, there's still the story, that looks very weak. Plus, the simplified gameplay.
It really looks like they spent the same ammount of time, money and interest on heroes 6 that you would spend on a $10 steam game. This is garbage, I'll just listen to the OST on youtube.

By this degradation they mean that all races will be at war for only one resource, and this resource will be rare. It's all fucked up. Why just they don't make something about "special" resources for strongest creatures but stay true with traditional homm resource system? At least that's make sense...
@mrdeathamore As for the lower the resources types, these are the reasons I've found by Ubisoft.
1) It brings more strategy to the game. This might not seem obvious at first glance, but in old Heroes games each faction had a specific resource to take care of and actually did not care much about the other players' mines. Now that every faction is looking for the same resource, possessing mines will be much more strategic as you’ll be preventing opponents from taking a crucial resource.
@mrdeathamore 2) Games with a lot of resources are more management games than strategy games. If you look at Starcraft 2 they have 2 resources. Games such as Settlers VII (7 resources) or Civilization V (32 resources!!) have many as they focus more on management.
3) It's much easier for map makers! You don’t need to put in different resources (or all of them) according to which factions other players might choose.
Is this a good change? I don't know, we'll see, but I find it interesting.

HoMM 3. The day i first played it, i never wanted anything else than it. Best game in history. This new one looks exactly like 5 graphic-wise but seems to have some new features? HoMM 3 looked amazing cause of good old 2D =)
Every heroes fan considers 3 to be the greatest one, with heroes 4 only merit being; having heroes in battle. So if you just combine those 2 and update it up here and there, you'd have magic on your hands. Who they keep making this game for now, I don't know.

@OAitchison I like this series purely for the 4th game. I played HOMM2 for a short while a long time ago (about 1998) and I liked the concept. I didn't play 3 at all. I tried the 4th game and it took me a long, long time to learn and get into the atmosphere, but I still love it and have played it for hours. There came a point when I'd figured out how to win every time and I became bored, but it took a long time to get there. I think Heroes 5 was nowhere near as good as 4. I have still to play 3.

If you want to play HOMM3, you can always create your own maps or randomise them. Heroes V and VI have their own qualities, and if you're not satisfied with the changes, go back to HOMM3 and keep quiet.

I hope they bring back the Devil in Heroes VI. They kept the Angel, why not the the Devil? Also, they need to make lots of neutral creatures. So far, HOMM 3 still hold the record for having the most neutral creatures.

People, stop whining about "ohhh I want new Heroes 3 with new graphics etc"... Is there any reason to make second 3rd Heroes if they already exists? Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge homm3 fan for ten fuckin' years and I love this game, but new one is also good. If you haven't played it yet for any reason, just download the demo and play. You will not be dissapointed (of course if you are not too conservative)

@mrdeathamore dude please keep your opinion for yourself. Ubisoft made a crap out of heroes... Why would we need Heroes 5 and 6? They are both epic failures. Starting from squared battleground and ending with all the rest. I agree heroes 3 should been remade just as kings bounty was remade as kings bounty - the legend armored princess crossworlds. You want to see real nice battleground and animations? Play kings bounty i mentioned here. Then tell us what you thing of Heroes 5 and 6.

@qaerkyr Agreed. Battlegrounds looks like shit, but this is not the main aspect of the Heroes which we love. I mean, when you play chess you care about how chess-board looks like? I don't. Same here. Yes, last games of the series looks like they was made for children, but it's still a strategy, where you play with your head, not hands. It's not like nowadays shooters or other staff - it's still better. But nobody won't remade Heroes 3, of course if NWC wouldn't get the rights to the series back.

Some of the coolest features were in your own town, where you could clearly see a development in the city, and it felt like your own. When an enemy came to capture it, you stood by your main town to the death. It seems some of the fun of creating your own town has perished by over-development, as well as moving adventuring forth in the adventure which in most cases were a Random map. They should COPY HOMM3 and just enhance graphics. HOMM3 was genious, and I still play it.

@texasSsplit I fully agree to it, but do you really want to play again and again the same system? In my opininon the HoMM 3 was the best part, but only making graphics better wouldn't help. More creatures, items, heroes, spells, and larger maps or even the world domination system would be awesome. Plus i think larger battlefields and more like heroes 5 would be better. I dislike just one thing. The recreate the same system each time making worse. They should upgrade HoMM 3.

I've actually played the Beta. I thought the game was actually very good. They may have made adjustments that might alienate long time fans of the series. But this seems like a solid strategy game for sure. I am looking forward to the next Beta Phase (8/16) and the Release (9/8).
This game deserves to be judged on its own terms. Lets cut it out with the "OMG HOMM3 roxxers!" and the "OMG 4 resorces" comments.

I liked heroes 4, it's map editor was more precise than the 3's and the campaigns were interesting. I think it's greatest fail (beside of the lack of upgradeable dwellings) is that the heroes could become a one person army (especially in the campaigns).

Looks great, but I wish when you enter a town it goes full screen. There's a whole atmosphere in all the heroes games when you enter a town, for instance, the rampart in heroes III, its full screen and there's pleasant music and fantastic scenery. This heroes game has murdered that aspect.

@axkaan HoMM 1-4 wasn't done by 3DO, they were done (and created) by New World Computing, 3DO was just the publisher (except for HoMM 1 which 3DO hadn't bought NWC yet). If you want to place blame on why NWC doesn't exist anymore than point your finger at 3DO.

I seriously think HOMM 3 is the best in the series. The new ones are made to look like Warcraft. 3DO should have kept on going and not trade with Ubisoft. I still have the HOMM 3 Expansion Pack with all three chapters and its the only game I ever play.

Yeah 3 is my favorite but 5 is actually really good. There are some things (initiative system, atb bar, indicator of number of kills, movement grids for opponents etc.) that don't add more content, but make the game so much more convenient. Heroes 4 is not so horrible either tbh. It is horrible the first 15 minutes, but if you stay a while it actually becomes really enjoyable. I love the hero and unit system there, as well as the growth system

The crappy art direction and the absence of town visualisation prove, without even looking at the rest, that they didn't give a damn about the universe and roleplay aspect of the game, as well as the respect of the series. And then, there's still the story, that looks very weak. Plus, the simplified gameplay.
It really looks like they spent the same ammount of time, money and interest on heroes 6 that you would spend on a $10 steam game. This is garbage, I'll just listen to the OST on youtube.

By this degradation they mean that all races will be at war for only one resource, and this resource will be rare. It's all fucked up. Why just they don't make something about "special" resources for strongest creatures but stay true with traditional homm resource system? At least that's make sense...

@mrdeathamore As for the lower the resources types, these are the reasons I've found by Ubisoft.
1) It brings more strategy to the game. This might not seem obvious at first glance, but in old Heroes games each faction had a specific resource to take care of and actually did not care much about the other players' mines. Now that every faction is looking for the same resource, possessing mines will be much more strategic as you’ll be preventing opponents from taking a crucial resource.

@mrdeathamore 2) Games with a lot of resources are more management games than strategy games. If you look at Starcraft 2 they have 2 resources. Games such as Settlers VII (7 resources) or Civilization V (32 resources!!) have many as they focus more on management.
3) It's much easier for map makers! You don’t need to put in different resources (or all of them) according to which factions other players might choose.
Is this a good change? I don't know, we'll see, but I find it interesting.

To be honest, I'm just one of that kind of HoMM fans that playing this game more than a half of the whole life, and it's hard to see that franchise which I love becoming more about business than the art. I'm pretty sure that new one will be popular and even will be favorite for some new audience, but none of the newest games of the series won't give that kind of emotions which were given by the first three games.

@OAitchison I like this series purely for the 4th game. I played HOMM2 for a short while a long time ago (about 1998) and I liked the concept. I didn't play 3 at all. I tried the 4th game and it took me a long, long time to learn and get into the atmosphere, but I still love it and have played it for hours. There came a point when I'd figured out how to win every time and I became bored, but it took a long time to get there. I think Heroes 5 was nowhere near as good as 4. I have still to play 3.
