  • f-20 is the best plane!!

  • Before terminating the program of the new aircraft, Northrop presented in March 1986 to the Mexican Air Force (FAM) a proposal for the operation of 18 F-20 Tigersharks or more F-5E / F. For Northrop was important to have a Mexican request that in addition to some others like Bahrain could start production of the plane, one can assume that the same type madeoffers to Brazil and Chile, although more inclined FAM F-5E before they closed the production line.

  • @TheMFC2012dos - What were the disadvantages of the F-20?

  • @ALB437 able to supercruise, that mean goes supersonic without afterburner

  • @PatriciaCookFind1

The F-20 has no trouble firing the antique

semiactive Sparrow with its APG-67 radar.

  • I was just thinking; why doesn't the US make a really light and cheap single engine fighter that it can mass produce and/or sell to less developed countries. So I looked it up and found this, now I am sad...

  • @PirateMcSandwich - Like the Gripen?

  • @ALB437 No, the Gripen's price per unit is too high. I was thinking of a price lower than that of an F-16.

  • @PirateMcSandwich - For which countries? What do you think about the Mitsubishi F-2A 43?

  • @Irishlad23ni Yes indeed it performed well, the russians pittied the F-5 against i think the MiG 21 and it won all the way. The russians got the F-5 when the communist took over the entire country of Vietnam.

  • @GianI - Why was the MiG 21 better?

  • Chuck Yeagar was a test pilot for the f20 program and said it was the best fighter he ever flew-

  • @edzick917 - So an error to stop the production?

  • @moahoah they did win the war! They just lost it politically why doesn't anyone understand this?

  • I love the F-5/20. For me, its one of the most attractive looking planes ever made. Just seems to me like the Americans hated it from day one. If I recall, its performance in Nam was absolutly fantastic and I bet the F-20 would have maintained that very same level of excellence right through to modern times. Its a bloody shame they wouldnt let it fly, dam politcians.

  • @Irishlad23ni - What were the considerations of the politicians?

  • our thunder gives great resemblance to tigher shark.. lol.

  • The Pentagon apparently didn't allow Taiwan to buy 100 of the F-20s, because it would have outmaneuvered the F-16 in a dogfight. The F-20 is also a much smaller aircraft than the F-16, and thus would have been more difficult to acquire and shoot down with guns in a turning dogfight, and presents with a smaller radar signature, an advantage in BVR missile engagements.
  • @ThamMalaysia but you see, we have F-15's, and were American so your point is invalid

  • @TheCMAFX

"We're (not "were", a common grammatical mistake made

by many English-speaking natives) American" - that

automatically places you at an extremely biased angle.

And F-15s would still have trouble with its APG-63 or 70

acquiring and then tracking the little F-20 - that's the

    whole point.

  • @ThamMalaysia I jacked off before commentating, my ' key is a little sticky, and I do go to a Military School, so i am aware of many of our air forces capabilities, and i am telling you right now, there is no airforce that can hang with us

  • A very cost effective and efficient aircraft, like the Saab Gripen. Unfortunately, like Gripin today, it didn't compete well because of various political reasons and a rather limited payload that cut down on its versatility. F-16s and F-18s are simply more adaptable and have a better established support infrastructure. It's like buying a car that has few available dealerships.

  • does US airforce has a plan to rebuild or re-back this kind of aircraft and make it a new design and more advance just like other aircraft like hornet and raptor?

  • @6digit no the original F-5 was designed as a throw away aircraft and an export to NATO nations because their aircraft were crap.

  • Reagan came into office and mandated Northrop not to sell this overseas as it would compete with F-16 and other sales to 'allies'. In reality it was cheaper and performed virtually better than the F-16 but 'was not built to Air Force specifications'. A very political move, and the death of a great combat platform.

  • this is one of the best fighter plane that was scrapped because of rejection friom air force and navy favoring f-16. too bad but f-16 is a tough competition.

  • @vsn119 the Navy didn't favor the F-16. The F-16 and F-18 competed for an Air Force contract and the F-16 one. The F-18 was picked up by the Navy to replace aging F-4's since it had 2 engines and a very low stall speed, perfect for carriers.

  • F-20 is the most beautiful air fighter.

  • @jaime0 F-16 was actually not a competitor, as this aircraft had better performance

and was less expensive than the 16. Reagan's revised foreign policy did not want this in the hands of 'allies', and wanted the F-16 to be our primary export aircraft. All political.

  • A88!!

  • Era un grandissimo aereo da combattimento! Meritava molto di più!

  • Si lo hubiesen producudo aún seria un caza muy valido.

  • Abolutely one of the most beautiful fighters ever built! Though I prefer the f5 when it comes to appearance

  • it looks alot like a Ferrari at some angles

  • I cry for the Philippines and for Northrop. F-20 only looks older, but its a low cost plane, and its easy to build. Why didn't the Philippines get a few. Other countries would have followed suit.

  • I Wish we'll have all our F-5's operational for once again (Philippine Air Force)

  • Yup. Chuck was full of praise for the F-20. You would think the opinion of the greatest pilot of all time would count. Nope. Sure wish we'd produced it. Very high-value, high return investment.

  • F20 is an upgraded F5. The F5 used two ICBM engines, and the F20 a single GE (I think) Chuck Yager flew the F20 as a test pilot, in comp. with the F16. GD F16 won.

The Talon T-38 is an F5 without guns and a rounded nose and intakes, the NASA guys fly these as personal jets, usually white, you'll see them trailing the shuttle when it lands. Still a nice looking bird.

  • Correction. The F-20 won the fly off by nearly every objective metric. The F-16 got the order. Not the same thing...

  • Politics......shame. F20 is a sleek looking bird, matt black with red pin stripe...just killer. The F5 is still one of my favorites (I have plenty:) My friend and I are going to build a Nieuport 17C.1. should be fun to build, and maybe some new tech for safety. I'll post as we get going.

  • The T-38 is a military trainer not only NASA uses them

  • nice fighter jet, it's like the f-16, small but very capable

  • è uma pena pois um avião muito bom.

  • yeah, 22250, is right about the music, need better..is like a porn fron the '70's

  • the f-20 was desighned as an export fighter. chiefly for taiwan who wanted 200. the u.s. at the time restricted sales to taiwan so that deal fell through. the f-20 was in many ways comparable to the f-16 and considerably less expensive. but the design was based on (at the time) a 25 year old airframe, most nations decide to go with a more modern design, the f-16, or they continued to buy the less capable but still effective f-5e, which stayed in production until 1979. have i bored you yet?

  • Several other country's were seriously loking at the F-20 (Jordan almost placed an order). From what I understand some of the smaller NATO nations (like Norway) took a close look at the F-20 as well but decided they would benefit more from using the F-16. Not just on a capability level but also because they could utilise the USAFE supply network to obtain parts for a common airframe. This also effected Mirage F.1 and F-17 Cobra sales to NATO.

  • Can someone please tell me the name of this song?

  • Discovery Great Planes End Credits

  • @jbcanada77 the song is shit I know that.

  • Y does the F-20 carry a gunpod as shown in 1.30? I tot they have their own internal gun

  • Yes, two 20mm actually. But gunpods are often jused on aircrafts with internal canons to make them more capable to perform CAS and simmilar missions :)

  • It's a shame. They could've sold some of these if they didn't market it against the F-16.

  • can some one tell me if some other country like mexico can buy the desing to produce the f-20 again

  • Had Northrop known it was going to compete against the F-16, it would have designed a much bigger airframe, more powerful engine, and with more sophistication regarding to weapons and avionics. I have no doubt this new version would have been attractive the USAF and given LM a run for their money. Politics is the true killer in the end though...Damn I wish this jet was flying, I would have loved to see how the plane would have evolved to meet with the times..

  • The F-20 is the coolest jet fighter in the world, in my opinion.

Watching the oldschool Area 88 anime movies made it even more epic to me.

  • northrop always has problems marketing its planes the F-20 is nothing they couldn't sell the achingly pretty YF_23 black widow. The F-20 was offered to Taiwan but the US govt blocked the deal supposedly at the urging of general dynamics which made the F-16 back then.

  • Nice video of a great jet, but wish they did'nt use a background music that sounds like something from an early 1980's VHS porno flick.

  • very nice this F-5G resp F-20. Would be interesting to see it next to the F-5E and F-18

then it is with his parts exact between this 2

  • F-20 was too far ahead of it's time.... and it is. With today electronics and engines it would have been the best "dogfight" jet in the world

  • chuk yagger has one for him self

  • Great vid, love that thing. Anyone knows the name of the song by the way?

  • This is my favorate jet.Like small jets. Not to but the others down.

  • I like this one and the f16 alot. But they are taking the f-16 out of service :(

  • No, they are removing the F-15. The F-16 will be in for a while.

  • Does anyone know where this video was shot?

  • This is just the ultimate bird. Thats how a jet should look like. The perfect design.

  • The story of this plane, can be a movie.

Comedy, drama, agony, it s all there.

Much better than the opponent f16.

The test pilots loved this plane.

The promoting campaingh begun in Greece

and airforces all around the world were

    excited.

Next day the price of f16 was 12mil.

3mil less. The f20 couldnt follow this marketing. We all know how much the falcon

costed the day when f20, shut down its programm.

  • if we looked from the design point of view yea the F-20 was and is a mature design compare to the F-16 ,but again the lobbyist in a congress in favour of General Dynamics that time which making it sucks!

  • Oh Hell Yeah.Looks Kind Of Like Area 88.

  • Cory is a dumb, she is the reason why nawala yung pagkakataon.

  • I watch this video it makes me want to puke not because of the f-20. But because of the f22andf35. These are great planes but they cost so much to build. Hey dumb fucks lets defend our country with 150 planes. That is probably all we the tax payers can afford at this time. Until the goverment passes it,s laws to take more of your pay checks.

  • I with you there. Utterly idiotic to base our air superiority on a handful of super expensive, super exotic fighters. We can't even afford to lose any to accidents which are pilots, being human, are bound to have.

  • It would have been a good aircraft in service had it been given a chance. I agree it was ahead of its time and it actually presented a middle ground for the countries seeking advanced capabilities of an aircraft in a not so prohibitive cost... I certainly hope the Philippine Air Force had em instead of the F-5A.. Had it been so, we would have added FORCE instead of more AIR in our air force...wahahahaha

  • Taiwan wanted to purchase several hundred f-20's but the U.S. denied the request. even though based on a 20 year old ( at the time) platform the f-20 was a superb aircraft. though the f-20 lacked some of the sophistication of the f-16 and f-18 it was faster and could outmaneuver the f-16 and the f-18. it's a shame the project was cancelled. the f-20 would have been an excellent cost effective alternative for countries with a need for a low cost effective fighter.

  • that's why I hate politics!

  • i wish the f-22 had all around thrust vectoring like the mig-29

  • if it did it wouldn't have nearly the stealth capability it has now.

  • F-18 hornets is the superb jetfighter of all version of F series.

  • i think the new f 35s will be better. but thats just my opinion

  • f-22 is the best duh. The best carrier based jetfigher will be the f-35. Yeah the f-18 may be superb but the f-5 and f-20 are beautiful.

  • The F-18 was created from the YF-17, which McDonnell Douglas STOLE from Northrop. ;-)

F-20 was too far ahead of it's time and Northrop didn't have enough Lobbyists at the time. The F-16 "beat it out", for Christ sake! ha!

  • I have a problem with the phrase f-16 better than f-20. If i am reading things right they still use the f5 tiger2 for combat simulations and it holds its own. Maybe even against the f16. If that is the case the first phrase does not make any sense.

  • They might be comparable in some aspects of performance, but the F-16 is at least slightly better at dogfighting. The largest difference is that the F-16 has longer range and versatility. The F-5 and F-20 are for shorter range, defensive deployment.

  • F-20 Before to Fc-1

  • cool vid too bad no one bought the F-20 sence it was ready for servece nearly 20 years ago

  • I think the F-20 would have been an affordable but effective fighter for the Air Force, but the F-16 really is better. If I personally could choose one to be my sportscar, I'd take the F-20, but for real combat I'd want the F-16.

  • agreed the F-16 has a greater paylaod only the Cs and above

  • the Germans did buy quite a few F-20s

  • no onlt 3 where built

  • The Germans have been using F-5s

  • (or dutch, swiss, austrians are considered germans maybe in some parts of the world?)

  • I would like to take the f-20 out of the science muesum take out the 404 engine shove a 414 engine in and see what that baby will do flatout. Always dreaming can't help it.

  • you and me both daniel, i wish some millionare would at least restore her to flying condition..

  • This is actually the problem of the F20 series.. Because it's based on the old airframe design of the F-5, It's already really highly strung insofar as an aircraft is concerned, the 414 might be too much for the plane to handle.

It'd be like putting a 454ci Engine in a Mazda Miata.

  • The air frame was redesigned for the f-20 to handle the new power of the 404. The frame was bullit proof compared to most fighter aircraft leading up to it and that was just the f-5 not the f-20.

  • Yes, the design was worked over, however, it did not have as much room for ordnance as the F16 did, due to the extra weight and bulk of the 404 and its fuel requirements.

  • those lucky piolts that did.

  • Brig Gen Yeager likes the F-20 the most.Very forgiving aircraft.

  • this is pakistans j17 or whatever that plane is. they were offerd it in 1986 or so but choose the f-16. this plane was just under built for weapons packages and upgradibility.

  • Not "under built" for weapon packages and upgradibility. The F-20's was an evolutionary growth of the F-5/T-38, which had an airframe that dates back to the 1950's and had reached the limits of growth potential with the F-20. The jet's basic airframe just could not be made to accomodate more weapons and equipment without becoming a larger new jet.

  • The Little Plane that Couldn't

  • That jet looks so cool! it would pwn a MIG-29 in seconds :)

  • I´m brazilian, sorry for my english, but cable124 is right. After all, planes have 4 dimensions: height, lenght, wingspam and... politic interests. This aircraft would be wellcome here at that time. Ok F-16 it´s a superior aircraft, but for our needs, F-20 would be a good one.

  • does anyone know why these planes didnt' go into production?

  • The f-5 series was never really implemented in the usaf except for the t-38. The f-5 was for sale outside of the country. By the time the f-20 or f-5g came along the f-16 had filled the slot. I geuss one could say the f-16 was suppose to be the next MAP fighter.

  • Actually, the F-5E did go into production with the USAF. In fact t F-5A Freedom Fighter was used in Vietnam. The Skoshi Tigers used the F-5 in Vietnam and the USN's Fighter Weapons School (a.k.a. TOP GUN) used them as MiG simulators before TOP GUN moved to Nellis.

    KW

  • KW you are right about the skoshi tigers but the planes were given to that country we were supporting. Has for the planes used in topgun they were earmarked for another country but not delivered so we had a surplus of planes that they found a use for in redflag the airforce version of the navy's topgun

  • I am going to get a lot of hell with this remark. The f-20 would spank the f-16, make the f-15 really work for it, and just be a pain in the ass for the rest. Bring on the comments.

  • Yeha, in a WVR fight, F-20 would kick major ass. However in a BVR fight, Tomcat would pwn it from 100 miles away. Phoenix Missiles Baby!!!.

The Tigershark would be hell in an angles fight. Now in an energy fight (using the vertical)it would depend on the pilot. The Hornet would kick it's ass in close though. Ain't nothin' better than a Hornet in slow speed maneuvering except possibly a prop aircraft.

    KW

  • "Ain't nothin' better than a Hornet in slow speed maneuvering except possibly a prop aircraft" really? check out some russian craft like Su-30,27,33etc. or the mig29...

  • the Flanker, Super Flanker, and Fulcrum are good planes. Hell they can pull off 'Pougachev's Cobra' but I believe that at slow speed (i.e. under 130 or so knots) they'll stall and go out of control. The F/A-18 Hornet still has a slight modicum of control at 110 knots, allowing it to do a pirouette while performing a Vertical Reverse.

I have nothing against either the Su-27 Family of Fighters nor the MiG-29 Family of Fighters I just believe the Hornet is a better aircraft.

    KW

  • "The most impressive aspect of the Fulcrum's performance for the American pilots was its low-speed maneuverability. "In a low-speed fight, fighting the Fulcrum is similar to fighting an F-18 Hornet," explained Capt. Mike McCoy of the 510th.

  • "..the Fulcrum has a thrust advantage over the Hornet. An F-18 can really crank its nose around if you get into a slow-speed fight, but it has to lose altitude to regain the energy, which allows us to get on top of them. The MiG has about the same nose authority at slow speeds, but it can regain energy much faster. Plus the MiG pilots have that forty-five-degree cone in front of them into which they can fire an Archer and eat you up."

  • "Below 200 knots, the MiG-29 has incredible nose-pointing capability down to below 100 knots" not trying to fight you. just some info.

  • Man, if we'd had a bunch of T-sharks and dedicated civilian pilots (or those who want to be pilots) on 9/11 then maybe the tragedies of that day may have had different endings.

We need new and upgraded F-20 Tigersharks and more new X-29 FSW's

    KW

  • I agree where can i sign up.

  • why did the USAF pick the F-16? I would have like to see this in combat back then

  • The F-16 was already in service about four years before the F-20 had its maiden flight and the F-16 used basically the same engine as the F-15.

  • oh i see.

  • Also, the F-5 airframe was, by that time, a 30-year-old airframe. It was still good, but the necessity for future upgrades were hampered by its limited improvement space. It would be too difficult to add on additional equpiment like TARPS and LANTIRN.

  • great little jet in some aspects is was better than the F-16

  • As the Russians use to say,"quantity has a quality all its own". Too bad we don't have a mass production attitude like that with some of this stuff.

  • Daniel; Maybe because this IS a cheap porn from '80s lol.

    PS: and I like it.

  • Saw the F20 Tigershark in 1985 in El Toro, California air show! Great plane, great military base... too bad they're both gone. El Toro will now be the biggest park in the U.S.

  • I do believe the f-16 before it even flew had the cotract signed. The f-20 never stood a chance no matter how it did. The fucking airforce was sick and tired of listening to how good the f-5 is. Never trust a bunch of assholes in a meeting room.

  • I liked the looks of the f-5 first time i saw a picture of one. Really like the f-20. Heartbreaker that it never went into production. On another note the music on this promotion video reminds me of cheap porn from the 80,s haha.

  • f 20's suck!!!!!

  • wow that was a good comment,,, NOT

  • Would make a good homeland security weapon. Low cost easy maintenance, rugged, reliable, stable. Just what we need in todays economy. I wonder how many could be made for the cost of one f-22? Still like the raptor beautiful peice of modern technology that we can not afford pretty sad isn't it.

  • All of you keep comparing the F-20 and the F-22 and they are like apples and oranges! While I love the Tigershark the Raptor is designed for different needs in mind: range, lethality, and stealth, something the Tigershark can't provide.

  • damn fine little jet

  • This plane is whaat my little country needed. Too bad it never came to be. Less down time, quick turn around. I guess the new saab is prettymuch the new f20, but its rough going as well.

  • F-16, F-14, AND F-22 are the best. Thats my opinion though...

  • The thing was just as good as a f-16, cost less and it was VERY STUPID not to produce it. The two that crashed were not due to polit error. The planes were too good for the pilots to fly. They were unprepared for the awesomeness and got overwhelmed.

  • The F-20 could carry medium range missiles too, do your research.

  • Even as a prototype, the F-20 was documented to be superior to the F-16 by most objective metrics. That is simply fact. It was and remains, one of the great failures of the US weapons selection and procurement system. Not that the F-16 isn't a great design; it is. But the F-20 was something very special that was truly killed by politics. Sad.

  • Umm yeah...I did. You are correct. Silly me. Canada could have bought 200 of these to supplement it's 80 f-18's. The thing worked, and it was not costly.

  • Too bad it could only carry two sidewinders. Anybody with a medium range air to air missile would own it.

  • It's common sense,..even though the F20 never made it past the prototype phases, those 3 F-20s were coparable to F-16 blocks OF THE TIME. Had the F20 program been allowed to roll into production, than no-doubt today's F-20 would have gone through several variants and improvements to keep it competetive to the F-16(or anything else in the sky.) To compare a prototype F-20 of 1986 to an F-16 block already in service proves nothing.

  • Beautiful!

  • F-20,F-5,T-38....MY FAVORITE JET...beautiful !

  • Do your research, the F-20 is more ergonomic than the F-16 of its time and she's sexy the way she is ;)

  • Too bad the F-20 did'nt have a F-16 style cockpit and a V-type tail/Twin rudders, it would made for a more sexy airplane.

  • Iran has built something along those lines. The Saeghah. They say it's better than a Hornet.

Personally I think the Saeghah looks like an F-5 with twin-canted tails (i.e.nowhere near as beautiful as the Tiger II or Tigershark)

    KW

  • Very good! Thank you! Chuck Yeager really liked this plane. Heard something about the F-20 beating the pants off of the F-14, 15, and 16 during a literal 'cold start' test. Anybody know anything about that?

  • The F-20 was never meant to compete with the F-16 under the FX program, but it was comparable or superior to early F-16 blocks nonetheless and vastly superior to the F-5E/F. The F-20's design and ergonomics has influenced the design of the AIDC Ching Kuo, Saab Gripen, and China's own JF-17.

  • No, politics killed the F-20 Tigershark. Many countries interested in the plane from Taiwan to Sweden ended up developing their own local jets after the U.S. gov. rejected their bids for the plane and instead offered them the F-16 at a similiar price. This move by Texas lobbyists in Congress ensured that production of the F-16 would continue for a longer run and also created more spare parts for the USAF.

  • Probably didn't help that 2 of the 3 prototypes crashed. Speaking of which, I know one was determined as pilot error, but did they ever figure out the cause of the other?

  • Both cases we're due to pilot error.

  • Did they get out OK?

  • g-lock NOT pilot error.

  • g-lock not pilot error

  • Many countries that operated the original twin engine F5 were satisfied with their lot. It has a quite reliable technology. So, there was not enough interest in this newer F20 single engine version. The F-16 was superior and favored by the larger customers. That killed the F20.

  • A really bad decision on the USAF high command's part not to have that machine built in series. Such a cool plane.

  • Two crashed during demonstrations and the other now resides in a California museum, still looking beautiful.

  • nice video!!! what happened whith the prototypes?

  • F-20 Tigershark videos are so rare, thanks for posting this!
