  • When I was younger, I worked on a Norwegian freighter and one of the ports of call was Noumea. By far, the jewel of the South Pacific as I felt that I was in the South Pacific but also in Europe. This was in the late sixties. It was absolutely breath taking sailing in from Fuji.

  • Another lovely & fascinating corner of the French-speaking world. Quite little known, with a low tourist profile.

  • enrique05's incorrect. The Melanesians are New Caledonia's natives. The French are the colonists. The island could be Kanak if that independence referendum or something comes through in 2014.

  • I am from Florida, and have lived in Hawaii. What a beautiful looking place, is Noumea!

  • Finally with Wallis & Futuna and Polynesians, the country became the multi cultural mix that represents best the local community. 40, 45% kanaks a little less Europeans and the rest are the minorities. Many have been mixed with sometimes nearly 8 different bloods origins (métis)

  • Thank you for your explaination in the history of New Caledonia. It has been enlighting.

  • it's my pleasure

  • @crankycross lol enlighting.

  • Ok it's too long... Then people from Reunion indian Ocean & Fr Carribean Islands Martinique & Guadeloupe (Fr. departments) arrive with India immigrants + people from NZ, Australia, Germans, Deutsch, swiss, italian, spanish, Portugese, polish... t be cont'd

  • With the rise of the NICKEL MINES, Asian people were "imported" from Vietnam (I'm one of their descendants), Indonesia (Java), Japan and also Chinese, but most Chinese came from Tahiti and other French Polynesian islands. to b cont'd

  • From 1864, French government built isolation prisons for criminals from their land and colonies they sent there far from their land + political exile for mostly Algerian tribes chiefs (Kabyles etc...) Those were the first non-kanaks in NC, then many waves of French from several French regions went there for a new life (Alsace, Bretagne etc...). to b cont'd

  • Hi there, cool to see people interested in NC and origins of people there. I'm from there and I'm gonna try hard to give you the closest right answer. Originally, before James Cook discovered it in 1774, NC was populated by "kanaks" (melanesians, micronesia is a close region but different, just like polynesia). The French took possesion of this land 1853. to b cont'd

  • Its also ALGERIAN because FRANCE deported poor Algerians to languish in prison for over 33 years

  • This video was intended to show my view of a beautiful part of the world as a destination to my friends, family (and the world through U tube)in my very short stay in Noumea as a tourist.

It is not entended to be a political 'sounding board' for the rights & wrongs in the South Pacific area. If you want to discuss regional politics please find other channels or forums to vent your opinions, as this is not the place to do so.

    Thank You

  • did u hear the main question man ?? who is the indignous people!!! kanak "melanasian" so fuck off with that arab shit

  • Whether they are Polynesians or Melanesians, they all belong to the South Pacific islanders. Meaning under the term the South Pacific region. Same goes to Micronesians who are within the South Pacific region. Now it is clear.

  • What is the real identity of New Caledonia? It is the French or the Polynesians?

  • From my seven hours in Noumea I would have to say the answer is FRENCH. New Caledonians speak French, drive French cars and use Pacific Francs, yet see had to travel half an hour on a bus to see polynesian culture.

  • wtf wat u mean polynesian!!!! its melanisian!! u fool . yea its french but the polinesians are imigrants !!!!

  • Thankyou for putting me straight on the matter.

  • are you crazy? THe French imprisoned thousands there and sent them to die in the isle of pines
