@exitre What kind of nonsense you are talking about? The Byzantines oppressed no nation that existed within the borders of the empire. They had one faith the christian faith. The political oppressions were only due to the wars between dynasties. It is the only empire in the human history that lasted for more than 10 centuries. Not even the Chinese lasted for so long. And the Ottoman empire didn't oppress anyone? Think wiser there was a Greek revolution and two Balkan wars against the Turkish.

Thee is an obvius prejudice about Christianity. People who believe that religions offered no good are unable to see that through religions arts and sciences were developed. The only exception was the dark ages in western europe. In Byzantium there were no dark ages. Yew they had problems religius,political etc,but don't modern societies have problems?

@andyzoi Yes, it is called chronological snobbery, where contemporary peoples sneer at their predecessors whilst dismissing the fact that their own civilization has done terrible things. We call much of the Middle Ages before the Renaissance the "Dark Ages," but the 20th century was a fairly dark age as well, with the genocide in secular Turkey, Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union; and concentration camps in the United States. So much for the ideals of our age.

Slavery as an institution reached its zenith under European powers due also in large part to superior technology, thus the Atlantic slave trade is imagined when the word "slavery" is dropped; even though it isn't particular to any society or time.
