Bad video, just bad.. What about testing a violin at the violin-builder and searching one out for the sounds of the high/low notes? And what about searching for a proper bow?
I dreamed to play a violen since I was10 years old, but I don't have a chance. Now that I learn that you started when you were 37 I am happy because it means it is not yet late. Thanks. I will start soon.
@fatimajoe why would it ever be too late to play an instrument? I don't see why it would! saying it's too late to learn an instrument is like saying it's too late to learn how to drive. you don't have to learn, but it's always good to know how to do it :). hopefully you enjoy learning, and playing violin :)
I've been playing violin for almost ten years, but am only 13. I use advanced techniques and practice hours a day (Though, about 30 minutes of that time is put into 3 octave scales, and their variations.) Up until this point, I haven't had a full sized violin. I'm extremely short with stubby fingers and arms, so I haven't been big enough until now. The horrid sound quality is no longer acceptable. With the amount of experience I have, what price range should I go for? (Money is no problem.)
@MatanuskaMafia if your a beginner dont buy an older violin. ull be looking at thousands and as a beginner you dont need these characteristics. As a starter pick in the range of 1 to 2k. And try them out first. choose the one that sounds the best in ur range. For me looks arnt important if the sound is good. its jst a bonus.
@swiftslip1 ya? 2000 dollars for a violin isnt even considered good. This is because in this price range the violins are usually factory made "Chinese most of the time" and they sound boxy. But dont get me wrong you can deff get a hand made violin for 2000 dollars that sounds amazing. Its just very rare.
@swiftslip1 I don't think most beginners could tell a $200 screech from a $2000 screech. For $200-$300 a beginner should be able to get a decent Romanian instrument that will serve well for a few years until he decides to either move up or quit the violin. Not everyone likes playing an instrument as much as they thought they would, and a $2000 dust catcher is a poor investment.

Yikes! The violin goes on the left shoulder actually. Not the Right. I suspect perhaps you are not really a violinist?

In my shop I ask students to not be biased against new or old instruments,
just choose the violin that is best for you.
As for the price question,... violins take about 2 months to hand make.
2 Months of wages is a lot of money, not to mention the cost of quality tone wood.... so $2000 is actually not much for a real violin.

what should a beginner look for as far as physical defects in a chosen violin, and also sound quality (besides older = better).
