  • As long as it was voluntary and didn't hurt too much :-)

I'm considering bow leg correction at the Hospital for Special Surgeries in NYC with Dr. Rozbruch. In the short term it seems terrifying (why did I watch EVERY tibial osteotomy online??) but if it substantially reduces the likelihood of ever requiring knee replacements, and allows me to do things that cause me pain now (running, dance, and even daily long walks), perhaps it's worth it. Was the process as a whole tolerable?

  • @wesleyan97 looking back it really wasn't that bad but obviously as you're going through it everyday sometimes it can get you down but i ended up waiting 4 years for the surgery and after 6 months i now don't have back pain and my walking is a lot better not perfect yet got a little more work but much better. you've just got to think about what it will be like in the future and how you will benefit!! do you get it covered by insurance?? i'm not too sure how it works in the US

  • @rockout2nite Yes, it will be covered by insurance. I'm so glad to hear that you're having a good outcome, one that sounds like it will only improve with time.

  • Why didn't they give you a regional nerve block? This seems unnecessarily barbaric.

  • @wesleyan97 it was my choice, 20mins max of discomfort....no waiting for a nerve block to wear off....not waiting to come round from anesthetic. it really wasn't that bad plus not a huge fan of needles i'd probably have found being given a nerve block more traumatic than having the frame removed!!

  • i had 12 and 6 of them had the small ball in the middle of it i had the dressing gown stuffed in my mouth so no one could hear me outside as i was in the doc office lol

  • @justworldwide I think I had 4, not too sure wasn't really counting lol it wasn't that bad until my consultant started 'tapping' them out. I was the first adult to have it removed in clinic, I wonder if anyone else will have it out in clinic?!?!? I guess I just have to listen out for the screams lol

  • @justworldwide lol well thank god its off it is a experience to live with this and how we all invent ways to adapt to our way of living the downside got 22 holes on my leg (scars)

  • Hello I got my on 7march and i still got'it on my leg,i should have it for at least 4month moore.

  • @Bebopasn good look with it all i hope it all works out!

  • I'm getting mine off in 2 days!!! But I'm actually gonna do it in the OR. I would not be able to handle it in the office. Does it hurt aftwards?

  • @Jenga2520 it's sore, mine ached for a while but eventually my leg got used to not having the frame supporting it. I guess it will be different for everyone but I'm pretty sure it will be sore, after all you are having a load of metal pulled out your leg lol just drug yourself up a bit!

  • @rockout2nite Mine wasn't sore at all on the contrary

  • @Jenga2520 mine was probably only sore after cos I was fully conscious for the removal.

  • @rockout2nite Oh, ok

  • Eleanor, well done, excellent video and thanks for copy which I shall show my other patients, Mr Rohan Rajan

  • I had a check up today and I told my doctor about this video haha I have lengthened my leg by 3cm & am doing another 3cm hoping to get 6 :-) Yeah you should of got the gas & air! Last time I had one of these frames on, my bone healed up and I kept lenghtening & in the end the bone snapped! Hurt like hell and and I had morphine up my nose and everything but the only thing that helped was The gas & air! haha x

  • @joepearcee ouch! i hope everything works out for you in the end!! there's a group on fb that i found really helpful its called 'ilizarov/taylor spatial frame'. i gave my consultant a copy of this video cos he wants to show it to his other patients to try n persuade them to have it removed in clinic,as i was the first person to have it removed in clinic. what hospital are you at??

  • No way did you just sit there and take that! Bravo! I've had three of these (Two Ilizarovs & one Taylor spatial) I have one of these on right now due to olliers disease my left leg is 8cm shorter than my right.. trying to get 5cm but I would never sit there whilst they unscrew it all. That's amazing :-)

  • @joepearcee thanks. The other option was wait till November for a theatre slot, I'd still have it on now if I'd done that and it only took 20mins to remove so it was definitely the best option, although he did say I could have gas and air and then when I turned up he said I didn't need it, I really wanted to try it everyone says its really nice lol

  • I've got one like it but Titanium.

  • @PoshyScouser mine was titanium too, quite a few people have them mine was pretty small though compared to most others

  • That frame looks familiar? :D

  • @PoshyScouser why's that??
