Thank you for the wonderful montage & this tune. I agree, the 70's Diana was her peak (visually & vocally), not only that , but everyone looked so bright, shiny & happy (younger Michael J., Quncy, Tony Bennett, etc.). It's also so good to see Diana's first hubby & the young kids (Rhonda & Tracy), good testament to Lady Di's best gift (being a good mother).
Makes me smile , just to look at this & hear this song (which I took so personally at the time... lol, proves 'it get's better').
PS- this is a different mix than the one originally released on the "Diana Ross" album. On that mix there's an instrumental break around 2:35, whereas this has a vocal section which introduces the "today I fell in love" refrain, and a quicker fadeout. This mix actually made its first album appearance on Diana's Greatest Hits that was released at the end of 1976.
No doubt this song would've (at the very least) reached the Top 40 on the pop chart, had fate not intervened. The album came out in February, and "Love Hangover" was the track everyone was buzzing about. When Motown opted to release this as a single instead, ABC issued The 5th Dimension's cover of "Love Hangover". Motown quickly edited Diana's version for a single and rush-released it, killing "I Thought it Took a Little Time", which at that time was still climbing the chart. It stopped at #47.
OMG!!! This video that you put together is toooooo gorgeous. I never seen this pictures of her before and the seventies and eighties were the time fo her. She was too beautiful andI wish I looked half as good as she did.
Yes, I agree that she definitely falls in the top three. She is my favorite of all time. She ranks right up there with her beloved friend MJ and Stevie W. One of the reasons why I am in agreement with you is because there is really no artist that has the mass apeal to reach just about every popular genre in music like her. She captures POP, R&B, Adult Comtemporary, House, (CLUB & Dance), Blues, and Jazz audienes with her long repoitore of hits and sounds that she provides. Yes!
this song is SOOOOOOO sweet! i love it. Berry Gordy did a workshop of a musical of the Motown catalog and this was included and I loved whenever we rehearsed it. These pics of Diana are the best tho. Thanks so much! Pls take a moment to check out my channel, and if u like, subscribe or add me :-) If u really like, grab the free downloads of my music and join my list at reverbnationdotcom forward slash kiamuze!!! @musiclover77able Yep...look in the list on the right...it's there...listed only by the title of the song...but you can see the pic of Marilyn and Billy. Good version...different form Diana's...which makes it easy for me to NOT choose a favorite. I LURVE them both.
What a nice video...the pics are wonderful. I always did love Diana's chic way of dressing...and LOVED her hair circa Lady Sings the Blues and Mahogany.
@musiclover77able Also, Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr. did a really good cover on their third album Marilyn & Billy. It's actually posted here on YT.
This is very underrated song from Diana. Her voice is magnificent and the song has such an unusual structure, so full of peaks and valleys. Pure magic.
@njezan1 , Underrated? Wasn't it a top 40 hit. I think it reached number 32 actually?? But I guess you're right. It was underrated. It has always been one of my favorite songs. Should have been in the top 20 at least.
@njezan1 The reason why it only reached #47 on the pop charts is that the Fifth Dimension decided to release their version of LOVE HANGOVER while this single was out. Motown quickly killed this single and rush-released Diana's version of LOVE HANGOVER instead. And the rest is history.
Thanks for this valuable information. I didn't have a clue. But I love this song much more than "Love Hangover". The reason is that "I Thought...." is more Motown, a very classy record, wheras "Love Hangover" is more a disco song, although a pretty good one.
@soulsistah100, Miss D probably has the best collection of B side songs ever. There are a lot of songs that never make it to the top 40 or top 20 that should. It's sad.
This has always been one of my favorite Diana songs. Her phrasing on this song is simply unbelievable. Don't worry about the haters .... all legends have them. With every unpleasant story they make up, the legend grows. Diana is so classy, she just ignores it and lets her work stand on its own. And what great work it is!
Fabulous! Fabulous! Fabulous! Woo Hoo! I've always loved this song, but it's been a long time since I heard it. Sounds even better today. These images of Diana are so beautiful and so incredibly rare. I've been a mega die hard fan for 30 years and I've never seen many of these images before. Excellent Work!
@konumers yes and we fans loved it but its when her haters bagan. they said it was elevator music etc but i always thought it was class, elegant, sophisticated pop/soul and a little jazzy at times. i loved all her work from the 70's. though her albums didn't sell all that well they were consistent with many great songs and hidden treasures...like this one.
Loved this presentation. The photos are wonderful--I've never seen most of them. The song is one of my favorites from my favorite Ross album. Thanks so much!
One of the most beautiful, "shoulda been bigger" singles. I thought it was perfectly timed after the global success of "Theme from "Mahogany" (Do You Know Where You Are Going To?)", this was positioned to duplicate that success. "Love Hangover" would not be ignored surely....how could it. "Love Hangover" was new, new Diana, and new to the music world......but "I Thought it Took a Little Time" would have and should have been a #1 pop record. It topped the AC charts but it was a Pop smash too!
Stunning! The 1970's were definitely, in my opinion, when Diana was at her peak musically. You've captured her beauty and talent perfectly in this gorgeous montage of photos - keep them coming! PS If only her albums Diana 1976, Baby it's me and Ross 1978 would be released on CD it would make many people very happy indeed!
@hev1701 , They don't release them, cause there is no demand for them, or not enough. As I understand it, Diana is a singles artist. Most of her albums were actually flops, but her singles were phenomenally popular and successful
@SpazChat diana albums were not flops......she and donna summer were the biggest selling black females of the 70s........generally 3-5 million..........if they were flops she would not be at well over 100 million worldwide........true all motown artists were singles artists.....as is today..............just my opinion.................i love this video though...........
@AIKAN1974 , I'm thinking that the 100million unit tally mainly came from her singles or 45's as we used to call them back then. As big of a fan as I was of her back then, I still think there was something strange about most of the material that was chosen for her solo career. It's like the producers couldn't decide if she was a pop singer or soul singer. Duh, she was a pop singer and crooner, not a soul singer.
@SpazChat true diana is not a soul singer in the traditional sense.but her baptist gospel/blues roots most definitely qualifies her to do some rhythm & blues..............but as she aged and as i have aged i realized that she can actually sing anything you put it front her her...............guess thats what you call a song stylist......with the exception of a few singles most of her 70s efforts were pretty good...this song should have been a million seller but it was scrapped for love hangover.
@AIKAN1974 , I just said what I said cause there were three tracks released in 2002 on her re-released 1st album, Stoney End, Time and Love, and a 5th Dimension tune. She did a beyond excellent job with those tracks. That was the quintessential Diana Ross. I wish they would have pushed that style for her more. She excelled with ballads and pop, I don't think they should have pretended she was a soul singer like they did at times.
@SpazChat i heard those tracks on here. she did great.in fact. her pop ballad she excelled at. cause she is not a soul crooner.she can have fun on certain tracks but you are absolutely right..even her post motown stuff she gets down on the pop ballads. think about the times. .you didnt really have straight pop Black singers. maybe one or two..like dionne..which is why she never won a grammy...her nominations were alwasy r&b and aretha had that on lock. as they always dump black folks back then.
@AIKAN1974 Your analysis is right on target. Despite not winning a Grammy, the Grammies have quite regularly recognized her star power. She was always at the top of their list for presenters and entertainers. Graciously, she has made many appearances on the Grammies, always boosting the ratings and the excitement.

In my opinion, Diana Ross is the greatest musical entertainer in the history of music.
Listening to her is mesmorizing. When she performed, it seemed effortless for her to do so. Motown was, is the greatest music of all time.

@BlogShag On Billboard it reached only Nr. 47. Till this song only "I'm Still Waiting" and "Sleeping" were lower placed.
It is also underrated in view of a small number of visits on You Tube and generally it is a very rarely played song on oldies stations.
Yet, the song and Diana's singing are magnificent
