  • bacon is nasty! how could u use it in a nice veggie recipe, yuck!

  • Comment removed

  • My husband & I don't particularly care for black beans. I'll bet these burgers would be great with small red or kidney beans as a substitute.

  • This is not supposed to be a vegetarian meal. Doesn't anybody read the entire video description and who posted it before making stupid comments?

  • its veggie bacon from thrive i believe.

  • Have you vegetarians heard of bacon and/or chicken TVP?

  • @MyFreedomChannel fuck meat

  • LOL thats not vegetarian at all. She put bacon it it. GROSS.

  • ruined a perfectly good meal wth swine

  • Gotta say, they have some amazing foods that can sit in your shelf for a very long time, and a good price too.

I'll tell you Natalie, in the event of a level 5 hurricane or a zombie apocalypse, you'll defintely be hearing from me :D

  • i wish i could see what's going on inside the pan

  • this was the worst cooking demonstration ive ever seen i was cringing the whole time. good recipe for flour burgers though.

  • Man! All I can say is whoever roped her in and put the ring on her is one lucky guy! Beautiful AND a great cook!

  • check out my video "black beans forever"

  • what makes u think that vegetarians are gonna use Bacon???

  • This is really new for me, but I'm going to try it.

  • Good idea!

  • Good recipe, thanks!

  • This is a great idea for my friends that are vegetarians. I'll pass this along to them. Thanks!

  • please don't. vegetarians don't eat bacon or chicken.

  • hi... there's bacon in this recipe...

  • What a great way to use your food storage. I always struggle with trying to rotate my food. I'm glad there are recipes out there like this to help me do that.

  • It is such a good idea to mix rice, tvp, and regular meat. It would be good with sloppy joes too!

  • I've never heard of this before. It looks good. I'll try it out.

  • hmmm...interesting. I'll try it out.

  • I only use black beans with rice, I have never heard of it used this way. I'll have to try it.

  • looks yummy.

  • These looks good, I will have to try them. I love black beans.

  • Love the kitchen. I like having another use for black beans.

  • Sounds good, but a little too much spicey stuff for me!

  • Yeah, the camera angle on this makes it really hard to see. I can't really tell what it's supposed to look like. But the recipe sounds good, and the final product looks good.

  • This recipe looks amazing! Thanks Natalie!

  • The camera angles needs some work, hard to actually see what this looks like

  • Yum! Looks good.

  • Yum...good idea.

  • looks fun to make. I like seeing how to fix the goopy problem. :)

  • I really like the way that Natalie is comfortable enough on camera to use her hands and do things that you would normally do at home in your own kitchen, it makes all of this really look doable.

Also I really like this recipe it's very healthy with alot of protein.

I have a question as well could you use brown rice in the place of white rice in this recipe?

  • Thanks so much for cutting me some slack Teardrop, as many others have done!. These things are tricky to do on camera, especially when you encounter problems like rice being too wet! Love the way you worded it up there, turning my sticky situation into a compliment, very generous of you!

In response to your question, yes, you absolutely can use brown rice and I have done that before and they are excellent. The recipe, from Prudenced Pennywise, was originally created using brown rice.

    Thanks!

  • I'll try the recipe, thanks. I would have liked to see down inside the pan while cooking.

  • Looks tasty!

  • The entire video would have been greatly improved if you had shown INSIDE the pan! Otherwise the recipe sounds great.

  • Those look very good, I love beans and sometimes when there is no extra for meat I always have beans on hand, I will definately have to try this one.

  • The black Bean and rice burger looks great but with bacon (fished out) and chicken stock, it 's more meat - less than vegetarian . I'm going to try it both ways . I have both vegi-saurs and meata-saurs at my house .

  • Definitely looks like something worth trying. Thanks.

  • I love making a roux! What a great thing to show and use for food storage!

  • Interesting...

  • where do you get your jewelery?

  • Haha, thanks for all of your comments and qustions Hstro10.

I get it all over, borrow it, Target, Nordstrom Rack, Etsy but much of it is from shoppes Australia since that is where I live right now.

    Thanks for asking!

    -Natalie

  • Looks messy and oh so yummy!

  • This looks like a great recipe for black beans! I love beans and especially black beans. I also love all the flavors that are in the patty.

  • My kids don't like beans, but they might actually eat this.

  • I grew up on a farm! So I like meat! But, this makes me think of my options!

  • Thanks Natalie, the Southwest version you showed looks fantastic. They look much tastier than the ones from the store. (Maybe tilt the dishes a bit more so the camera (we) can see what's inside.) :)

  • What a fabulous way to use rice and beans. We eat these all the time but I have never thought of them in the form of a burger. I am definitely going to be making these.

  • Living in the Southwest...those are some of our favorite flavors....looking forward to trying them.

  • Looks good, can't wait to try it. It would be helpful if we could see inside the bowl while she's mixing so you could see the consistency and also see while it's cooking in the pan.

  • That looks really good! I'd like to try it without the cheese! Thanks for the idea!

  • Yummy!

  • as for the vegetarian thing:

The chef probably should have mentioned it, but the bacon is totally optional! When you have a special dietary need, you just have to adapt things as needed and experiment to find what works best for you. Also, pretty sure the THRIVE Bouillon for the chicken stock is vegetable-based, making it cool for vegetarians. And you'd only have to admit the egg if you were vegan or a lacto-vegetarian, so once again - it just depends. You've gotta roll with it.

  • I had a black bean burger years ago that I just LOVED. I haven't had one since but have wanted to see if I could find a recipe to make my own...this seems like it will be exactly what I have been looking for. Can't wait to try it!

  • I would have never thought to make a patty out of rice and beans. I will have to try it. I am not a vegetarian, so I will have to try. Thanks for sharing.

  • I would have omitted the flour, the bacon and the egg. - The patties are not really vegetarian with meat in them. Drain the beans and rice. Process the beans and rice in a food processor and then add the other ingredients. The pattys will be wonderful - The other ingredients seemed great.

  • Great idea for something different using rice and beans.

  • I love black bean burgers! Thanks for this video so I can make them myself. Though I must point out it isn't really vegetarian if you cook it with bacon, chicken stock, and bullion!! Just sayin'.

  • Sounds tasty, but bacon isn't usually included in vegetarian recipes.

  • This looks so easy and yummy too! Great idea.

  • I was looking for a good black bean burger recipe. This is great that I can do it with food storage.

  • I enjoyed the idea. Now, if I can just get my picky eaters to give it a try. Any tips for that?

  • This does look good. I'm not a fan of vegetarian food but I will try this recipe.

  • Awesome, those look yummy!

  • You might want to use clear glass bowls so we can see the items.

  • Great video! Thanks!

  • I love black beans and rice. I just might try theseburgers but I may have to leave out some of the Hot stuff.

  • Nice - I really appreciate a semi-vegetarian recipe every once-in-awhile. Love the addition of cumin to the recipe ; )

  • Yum! I need to order more from thrive!

  • Is it still considered vegetarian if you cook the beans with bacon?

  • No, it wouldn't be vegetarian in that case. But you can easily omit the bacon and still have a great dish that in that case WOULD be vegetarian!

Thanks for the comment, great question.

  • I love rice and beans and it;s nice to know that SHelf Reliance carries these two foodstuffs.

  • YUM! I'd like to see what's in the bowl and pan as its made

  • Looked too wet at the start but just right when done. Sounds really good. I'd like to see what's in the bowl or pan one in a while.

  • Thanks Lala! Yes, we're working on our camera angles, actually we're working on everything! We're all really new at this but are trying hard to learn and improve with each video. I agree, the camera angles in this one leave a lot to be desired!

And yes, the rice was FAR too wet. The rice had been made but was given too much water, but I didn't realize until I was already filming the video and it was too late. The good news is that if you make your rice properly it won't be too wet for you!

  • Will have to try this. Love Thrive!

  • Looks good. Please let us see what is in your bowl or pan once in a while.

  • Sounds good. Would like to see the food more in the bowls.

  • Would like a better view it was difficult to see. There seems to be to much liquid. I would smash some or all the beans. I do like the idea but would have to make changes.

  • Thanks for your comment, and I actually might try smashing the beans myself next time I make these! Great idea!

Yes, the rice was far too wet! I didn't notice it had been prepared with more than the required amount of water until after we had started filming. But again, just make your rice properly, unlike us, and you won't have any problems at all.

The flour still does need to be used on the exterior of the burgers, it gives it a nice crust, you just won't need near the amount I needed!

  • ok have a question you say bring it to a boil - do you bring it to a boil and turn it off or let it boil down for a few hours...I am taking it as let it sit by turning it off after the boil but my beans never get soft enough

  • Thanks for the question Mrs! If I understand you correctly you are asking about boiling points during the soaking period. To clarify, when doing the soak, which is the first part, you bring it to a boil and then leave it on the burner for atleast an hour but turn off the heat. Yes.

Then, after draining and refilling with new water, you bring to a boil but keep boiling / heating until beans are cooked through, which takes an additional few hours.

Hope that helps and best of luck!

    Natalie

  • ok now do you have hints on how long to do in a crockpot?

  • They sound really yummy. I think that an overhead view would be helpful. I like to see step by step pictures. The final product looks great.

  • Who would have thought! Black bean and rice burgers. I'm going to hve to try these!

  • These look great. We are always looking for meat alternative dishes. Thank You.

  • Sounds good & looks great BUT not sure how to sell a meatlover family on it! Here's to trying!

  • Thanks for the comment Charly! I bet you'd be surprised! I'm a serious meatlover too.

  • These look yummy I might actually eat beans with this recipe!

  • Wow those look amazingly yummy! I can't believe all the wonderful things you can actually make with your food storage and what a great way to use up all those beans you have sitting around!

  • Can't wait to try something new. I love the fact that I now have another recipe I can use beans in!!

  • Yum. Thanks for the great recipes and easy to follow video!

  • Something new to try with all the beans I have in storage. Looks tasty!!

  • i think i may try this recipe looks very interesting

  • When she started I wondered how the mixture would ever become a burger, but she made it look easy, and gave hints to reduce the moisture so the patties would stick together/ With the cheese, it looks gourmet.

  • I love spicy and I love burgers so this is a keeper!

  • What a great new recipe. I will have to try it.

  • I think this sounds great, will have to make it without spicy stuff though. Also, would really like to see the whole process from a top view looking into the pots and bowls. Thanks

  • re: rebbiedeed

I bet you could use THRIVE eggs to bind the burgers. I haven't tried it myself, but they're made with real eggs and they've worked with other things i've tried even when i thought there was NO WAY they would work. Anyway - worth a shot, at least.

  • Looks like something to try!

  • Could you use the THRIVE Whole eggs to bind the patties?

  • Thanks so much for your question Rebbie!

I wouldn't have thought so, and binding was the only thing I wasn't using the eggs for. Then I tried it with meatloaf and meatballs and it worked! So now I would say yes, give it a try!

    -Natalie

  • Looks yummy! I like how flexible the recipe seems.

I too would have liked to see a different camera angle so we could see the inside of the bowls.

  • I think I would skip the real bacon too, but otherwise I am very excited to try these. I am always looking for ways to feed my kids meatless meals now and again without making them realize the meat is missing!

  • the recipe looks great - I am sure my husband and son will love it. I would have appreciated the camera angle to actually show the food instead of just the side of the pot

  • these look yummy - I am so not a bean person but with learning how to make my food storage more versatile we have been learning how to eat beans in different things - it looks really healthy I may have to try this one

  • Sounds so yummy, think we'll give this recipe a try.

  • They look great! I spend quite a bit buying black bean veggie burgers... I never thought about MAKING them!

  • How is this vegaterian if you add bacon!!!! LOL

  • Just cook it without the Bacon on use the Bacon TVP in place of the Bacon strips.

  • What a kitchen
