I was there when it hit. I arrived to help my friend off the island. They called me a storm chaser., I got my friend off the island and had a Hurricane Party at a local Motel bar in Jacksonville. Woke up in sleeping bags next to a grocery store with The Red Cross giving us breakfast. powerful Hurricane to me and my friend. By the way my friends beach cottage I had stayed the night earlier with was completely destroyed!
That is great footage - as a Canadian who regularly visits Topsail Island and lived there for 7 months in 2002, we all dread the next Fran or Floyd, thank god there has not been a bad storm since those two....
Wow! I can't believe you guys stayed for that one. Amazing video! Didn't they evacuate the island? We were there when Floyd hit in '99. The entire island was evacuated, but we came back, all the way from Virginia, the day after it happened. At the time. we were allowed back on designated parts of the beach. The shells were crazy!! People getting leaf bags full of them.
@katydid26 A few people stayed on the island; one being the surfer guy and his dog you see in the eye of the hurricane. I personally was given a police escort out onto the island to film the storm for a historical record.
I believe they "moved" the pier house when they rebuilt the pier after Hurricane Fran finished if off later in 1996. Do a google search for surf city ocean pier for a picture of new pier. Bertha had a large eye:
