If you follow this guys methods, you'll get lost. Time 2:20 this guy tells you "standing with heels to back of stick, with sun on your back, North is directly in front of you... this is true when you are in the Northern Hemisphere."
That is false, and here is why;
It's all about solar declination and position of the sun. If your LAT is 10 degrees North, and the date is 21 June, solar declination is 23 degrees North, "sun on your back" means you are pointed South.

Its almost like them idiots on youtube that are so excited about and teaching the 3 bandanna water purification technique. There so excited about it, learned it from a book, but since they can't think on there own, they fail to tell the viewers that the system is useless if your going to let the water seep or overflow over the sides, which means you want to pour slowly or the system for water purification is useless.
Learn to think, plan, and surpass books. If your going to Use books then at least think of what there not telling you, or where the info there telling might be wrong, don't follow them blindly. Your doing great in trying to teach people, but since your sun and watch method are both wrong, there not helping. Books fail to tell you watch method is for pm, which means am is reversed like I said.
If it is 6pm, point hour hand at sun, halfway between 6 and 12 then you get 9pm for north, but for AM you go reverse using right half of watch, so if its 7am, point hour hand at sun. Halfway between hour hand and 12 in reverse you get 3:30, which is north.
Thats the problem with learning from a book and not being experianced enough to tell whats right and wrong and also being able to figure stuff out on your own. Books also wrongly explain the watch method. Watch method works fine for pm, but they fail to tell you that if its AM then you have to dissect in the opposite direction. Im using the method where you point the hour hand at the sun. So PM, you dissect the left half of the watch, AM, you dissect the right half, to get north.

DANGER ALERT! This could be misleading. Yes, he did find an east west line, but in the Northern Hemisphere, using this mehod the first mark is WEST. To find NORTH you must stand with the first mark to your LEFT! He is doing it standing with the first mark on his right! He is facing SOUTH! (Though if you ignord the video and simply use the audio. ie sun at your back, it will work. problem is in the video he is facing the sun and facing SOUTH, when he points and speaks of NORTH!

I have one question about using an analog watch to find north. Does it matter which direction (clockwise/counter clockwise) you you go to find south? for example: it's 3 o'clock. That means that south is at about 1:30. But at 7 o'clock, south is at 3:30? It seems to make sense that to find south you need to divide the hour hand position and the 12 o'clock mark in a counter clock direction. Am I right? Or am I a complete noob..

Most that watch this are not military and are not going to be military. Civilian survival isn't going to be about cammo and automatic weapons, it's going to be about bugging out or sitting it out. Always good to practice, plan a "what if" weekend. Spend a weekend using your gear (for either senerio), get practice and see if what you have works they way you think, or walk to the next town with your BOB and see if you can. You will fight as you train, simple maxium.

SAS does don't train SF(Green Beret's). When DELTA was originally formed SAS did help train them t get their feet on the ground. but thats it after that SAS has had nothing to do with any of our special forces. Especially our Vanilla tear 3 forces (Green Beret's and all SEAL teams besides SEAL team 6). But they only helped us start our black ops DELTA Force, our Maritime black Ops DEVGRU(SEAL team 6) have always trained themselves.

Why put your feet on the stick when using the sun and stone method.
Just stick another stick 90 degrees with your first stick and it points North and South. The Sun will be on the Southern side in the Northern Hemisphere, and will be in the Northern side in the Southern Hemisphere.
Why does the minute hand appear to be the line you've used to set your baring on. The hour hand (shorter) shows at about 6:00 a.m./p.m. and the minute hand (longer) is at about quarter after. So why hold the blade of grass up to the minute hand. I could just have it ass backwards. Thanks!
I think he had the stick and sun part backwards. He showed the shadow rom the stick facing one way and then stood against the stick with his back toward the North. On the paper diagram, he did it correctly.
Whilst the stick and stone method works it's so convuluted, and if you have a watch to measure a twenty minute time period you're going to use the hour-hand method any way. Also, you don't need to lay a twig along the watch face, you can just look at it. I fail to see why you're advertising these as "special forces" methods of navigation when they're techniques that any school boy would have learnt by the age of 13!

If you were in capture and made an escape, you has run for a long time but need a break, maybe you can get some food from plants and larves, but are unsure about the direction. I cant see why one of these technices isnt good enough then, but ofc it would be hard to take the time... And it is also possible to look on trees and plants. But its useful to know, then u can do something if you have lost the compass.

The stick shadow method is a ballpark method for getting your bearings. It isn't reliable during early / late hours at far North locations.

DANGER ALERT! This could be misleading. Yes, he did find an east west line, but in the Northern Hemisphere, using this mehod the first mark is WEST. To find NORTH you must stand with the first mark to your LEFT! He is doing it standing with the first mark on his right! He is facing SOUTH! (Though if you ignord the video and simply use the audio. ie sun at your back, it will work. problem is in the video he is facing the sun and facing SOUTH, when he points and speaks of NORTH!

I have one question about using an analog watch to find north. Does it matter which direction (clockwise/counter clockwise) you you go to find south? for example: it's 3 o'clock. That means that south is at about 1:30. But at 7 o'clock, south is at 3:30? It seems to make sense that to find south you need to divide the hour hand position and the 12 o'clock mark in a counter clock direction. Am I right? Or am I a complete noob..

Most that watch this are not military and are not going to be military. Civilian survival isn't going to be about cammo and automatic weapons, it's going to be about bugging out or sitting it out. Always good to practice, plan a "what if" weekend. Spend a weekend using your gear (for either senerio), get practice and see if what you have works they way you think, or walk to the next town with your BOB and see if you can. You will fight as you train, simple maxium.

SAS does don't train SF(Green Beret's). When DELTA was originally formed SAS did help train them t get their feet on the ground. but thats it after that SAS has had nothing to do with any of our special forces. Especially our Vanilla tear 3 forces (Green Beret's and all SEAL teams besides SEAL team 6). But they only helped us start our black ops DELTA Force, our Maritime black Ops DEVGRU(SEAL team 6) have always trained themselves.

Why put your feet on the stick when using the sun and stone method.
Just stick another stick 90 degrees with your first stick and it points North and South. The Sun will be on the Southern side in the Northern Hemisphere, and will be in the Northern side in the Southern Hemisphere.
Or you can draw a 90 angle line.
It is quicker and easier.
From an old Jarhead who has used this method.

Why does the minute hand appear to be the line you've used to set your baring on. The hour hand (shorter) shows at about 6:00 a.m./p.m. and the minute hand (longer) is at about quarter after. So why hold the blade of grass up to the minute hand. I could just have it ass backwards. Thanks!

I think he had the stick and sun part backwards. He showed the shadow rom the stick facing one way and then stood against the stick with his back toward the North. On the paper diagram, he did it correctly.

Whilst the stick and stone method works it's so convuluted, and if you have a watch to measure a twenty minute time period you're going to use the hour-hand method any way. Also, you don't need to lay a twig along the watch face, you can just look at it. I fail to see why you're advertising these as "special forces" methods of navigation when they're techniques that any school boy would have learnt by the age of 13!

Thanks for the comment, this is one of very many survival nav tips included in our DVD, SFAT Getting Back to Civilisation, there are so many ways to check nav when your on the move in a survival situation... and any method not matter how simple is another great tool the more skills you have the better your knowledge, hope and will to survive are massively boosted... the more the better...

If you were in capture and made an escape, you has run for a long time but need a break, maybe you can get some food from plants and larves, but are unsure about the direction. I cant see why one of these technices isnt good enough then, but ofc it would be hard to take the time... And it is also possible to look on trees and plants. But its useful to know, then u can do something if you have lost the compass.
