The flying Mercedes at Le Mans brought the almost immediate cancellation of the CLR project as was participation in the ALMS series. Mercedes blamed the humps at Le Mans, which were lowered later. Later on Mercedes claimed that a miscalculation during aerodynamic development had a role in the crashes as air was literally lifting the car off the ground from the underside.
wasn't it the car in front that Toyota? it's design forced alot of air to the ground, so the Mercedes got that high pressure under the front and well you see what happens.
The governing body of this motorsport (which I feel is spectacular) could implement some guidelines as to the safety regulations...E.G.: they can require all entrants to have certain downforce requirements above 100kms/hr and designs that will keep 'em grounded.
I don't thing the corner was the problem, the small rise allowed for high pressure under the nose, when it couldn't evacuate the high pressure moved under the entire undertray, once pressure seal is broken there's only one result. It seems it should have been a fairly easy fix if it happened more than once. There are ways to evacuate which will not impede the aero Cp
The car Mercedes had before the CLR, the CLK GTR was a brilliant race car, this one was a disaster. You can see why really. They lowered the hump there as well after this accident. Pretty lucky no one was injured.
Great cars those Clr's were: just one flaw: the tendency to go airborbe and flip a dozen times. Mark Webber had suffered the very same accident a few days before. After this one mercedes withdrew the cars form competitions
Not only a few days before, but also during the pre-race warm up... Mercedes had 3 cars at LeMans and 2 started because they withdrew Webber's car before the race
You're an idiot, do some research before you say random crap like this. That was Peter Dumbreck who went for the ride between the Mulsanne and Indianapolis corners and he walked away.
Wow.The flying silver arrows.Mercedes surely had a tough time. The A-class had turned over and flipped in Sweden just a year before and then this at LeMans.
you can check out a video called Mad Car Flips, to see more car flips.
