They did know the fusion dance at that point. Goku suggested they use it to beat super buu because there was no other way(inside of buu) and vegeta replies stating he would never do that dance. Then he does his usual criticize goku of not being a warrior and yadaya. He would have had to know it though in order to be able to say its a stupid dance.

Really wouldnt NEED fusion. They would just need to bring gohan or gotenks down and then kid buu would be killed easily. Still good video.

kabitokai goes down and brings them from Earth to Kai planet or Goku goes down and gets gohan, goten, and trunks and goes back before vegeta is killed. Both have the ability to go out and retrieve gohan or gotenks. Thats what goku wanted but vegeta wanted the human race to fend for itself.
