It cracks me up that this idea that Mike Nelson is an ultra-conservative gets taken seriously. So seriously that there are actually people arguing about it. The claim that Mike Nelson is a conservative comes from an interview he did, quotes from which are on his wikipedia page. If you read the whole interview Nelson is obviously joking about being very Christian and being a hardcore Republican. They make very few political jokes but when they do they are always making fun of conservatives.

@moskalsam read Mike's interview with the Lincoln Heights Literary Society Issue 7 - Summer 2005 He is clearly not joking about being christian. He says "almost every career and life decision I make depends upon it." when taking about his faith and that his wife "works with youth groups and churches as her profession". Oh and he also endorsed Bush during the interview. Rifftraxs make fun of whoever would get the best laugh. It doesn't matter what side and that's why I love them.

@Cruzman3609 Given that the RiffTrax guys are mostly conservative and support those kind of things, my guess is that they do it because Ron Paul's devotees are too thick to get the joke and that makes it even funnier. Not that you're a prime example of what's so funny about Ron Paul followers or anything... I would never imply that. I know better than to joke about Ron Paul.

Mike Nelson is the only conservative member of Rifftrax and he was the only conservative member out of all of the MST3k people-and even HE made jokes about  Bob Dornan sucking. They rarely did political jokes on the show ( probably out of respect for Mikes opinions) but when they did make them they were mostly at the expense of conservatives like Dornan Anne Coulter, Bush etc. I'm glad they don't make many political jokes because you can alienate half your viewers that way.

@trapadoored I disagree that Mike was the only conservative member. The mst3k crew was very politically diverse, with Frank being very liberal and Mike being very conservative, and the other people falling between them. Both Kevin and Bill have expressed conservative ideas, so I wouldn't feel comfortable labeling them as "liberals" if that's not how they feel.

But I do agree with you that it's a good thing that politics rarely factors into RiffTrax. I don't go to RiffTrax for political insight.

I don't know where you heard Bill and Kevin being conservative, but if it was joke on Rifftrax or mst there is a good chance they are merely performing the joke and didn't write it themselves. I have read things that Kevin has said that are extremely liberal sounding. Particularly when he is writing about the aforementioned Bob Dornan in the episode guide book. As for Bill, I guess I just assumed someone who likes "the Clash" as much as he says he does would have to be a liberal. ;)

I was a very left leaning guy as a youngster ( now I just stay out of political debating altogether) and I remember being very bummed to find out Mike was conservative. But I came to respect the fact that he doesn't involve it in his comedy. There's an interview clip on here somewhere where a guy tries to get him to make fun of Bush-but instead of voicing an opinion or getting mad, or firing back Mike just says he "keeps his politics close to his vest"
