  • the JMP Mark II is fundamentally a Plexi with a front-end gain knob.....it is still the best guitar tone monster ever made..every Marshall since then has been absolute dogshit in comparison.......Mesa?.....fuck that shit!!....My JMP MK2's all tested at 165 wattsRMS!!!!..unfortunately i sold them off back in the late 80's to a couple of lucky bastards for $400 each because i was moving out of L.A. and needed rid of them

  • noice!!!

  • I just got an amp exafctly like this ('79 JMP2203) to mod, but I ain't gonna change it anymore... it's such a MONSTER the way it is!!!! !!!

  • Awesome I'm picking up a 73' 100W JMP in the next few weeks with a 71' Cab, I like the tone better than you're amp but it is still good. How loud was your volume at?

  • This must just kill people at gigs. What a fucken amp

  • Get rid of the OCD and play it stock. I'd like to hear the amp on its own :)

  • Sounds awesome!! JEEZ!

  • Nothing's better than a Gibson straight into a Marshall.

  • I have a 1977 Marshall JMP Master Model Mark II 100 watt head (and a 4 X12 cabinet that I dropped in 4 Celestion green backs into).

I bought the JMP brand new in 1977 and still have it today. Over the years I have modified a few things. To make a long story short, I have tube biased the amp for Groove Tube El34's , Sylvania 6L6's, Sovtek 5881's (currently using), and now I want to go back to the original 6550's. - They have the best BOTTOM end monster sound that I really love for that model.

  • @seldco I've had 10 JMP heads and the best tone I ever got was with my 1979 50 watt with 6550's in it. into a Marshall 300 watt 4x12. It also had an extra preamp tube installed to boost the input signal but I tell you what....massive and tight bottom end with sweet and screaming solos. The heavy 79 Les Paul Custom with a JB pick up helped a lot too. I still have the amp but van Halen made me sell my guitar. : (

  • two questions: 1 Is this the 50 or 100 w head? 2 do you say this head would be the best in comparison to the orange dual terror for zepp and acdc. the hard rock stuff. I got a mesa dual recto for metal for my band, but i also love classic hard rock, so this or dual terror?

  • @ripcliffburtonrip The dual terror sounded great in my bedroom, but at a gig you couldnt hear it over the drummer: no cut thru the mix. A jmp will blow the drummer OFF the stage!

  • I have the same amp sound killer

  • damn man, im not even that much a fan of heavy stuff but i feel like i could drop d a guitar and chug on that thing all day. that is one fine sounding piece of valve art

  • thats so much like jimmy pages tone in the middle sounds soooo awsome shoulda played black dog here 5/5

  • I have the same amp, and More LOVE THEM ALL, Very Cool Licks and If thats an LP , Extremely nice Tone , Thanks for Sharing!!!

  • Too bad the audio quality is so crappy. But it's still obvious that this is one kickass sounding amp.

  • My stepdad unfortunately had just passed away and he left me this amp (along with ALOT of guitars) and I was curious how it would sound. I been wanting a Marshall amp for the longest time and been playing with a crappy 60W Peavy forever. I cant wait to plug in my new amp and play. Finally Crazy Train will sound right lol.

Any tips on how to recreate the Rhoads sound with this amp? I already have all the pedals (MXR Distortion+, etc.)

  • Comment removed

  • For the most part Randy's amp was modified with cascaded preamp channels. These had it stock, hence the one channel high and low input instead of individual channels.

  • so my JMP already has the cascade? I am assuming it does, I have no clue what year it is, I just know its a JMP MKII Master Volume head.

  • I don't know all the heads. If it has 2 inputs (high and low) it's cascaded, meaning it has both sides of V1 set up in series. If it has 4 inputs, 2 high and 2 low for 2 channels, then it has the 2 channels in parallel, one using each side of the first preamp tube.

  • Yeah my amp is exactly like this amp, 2 inputs, high and low. So its cascaded already? Sweet!

  • turn vollume to around 5, bass on 0. distortion+ and a 10 band EQ

  • I actually turned my volume (preamp) to 6 or 6.5 and the bass to 2, treble to 7, mids to 5.5 and the presence to 5 to match the 1959RR manual settings and it sounds pretty freakin close. Nice Suicide Solution type tone. No clue what to set my Distortion Plus to, but my MXR 10 band I set to heavy mid boost.

  • no likey

  • who careys

  • great tone, it's nice to hear that Marshall sound with some low end for once

  • i love that the tone in this clip is controversial :)

It's not modded! Its just awesome

  • well you're using an ocd... how much gain is the gain on on the ocd?

  • it was less than half. if i recall correctly i had all knobs at 11:00

  • oh thanx for responding

  • hey there. its me here. yeah, the amp is stock. If you look at the details you'll read that i was using an OCD to boost. There is no way the JMP has this much gain stock. However, the JMP works so well with the OCD that the gain and volume levels just nudge it to sound amazing. The 2 together is a match like no other.

  • Hey if it's not too much hassle what are your settings on both the amp and the ocd? I have the same amp and an ocd and cant seem to get mine to sound like this. Also is this one equipped with EL34's or 6550's

  • Hey, i'm glad you like the tone (assuming that you do). Yeah, i had the eq levels on 12:00, gain would be at around 1:00 and the master would have been around 2. It was really low volume. The ocd was set to about 10:30 on all dials. It was likely set to LP but thats from memory. I generally play in the LP mode.

this amp has the EL34's in it. My cab had V30's and CL80's in it and i was playing an SG RI with Classic 57's.

  • @bisaillion I know the post is two years old, but I agree and need to ad that the OCD works even better as a clean boost with the JMP. Try JMP gain around 1-2 o'clock and OCD volume full and gain on 0. Amazing to my ears! ;)

  • Yeah, I think this amp is modded, 1979 JMP's usually don't have this much gain. Take the chassis out and look at the gain stage compared to stock. Sounds great.

  • of course it has gain he is using an ocd pedal when i sold it too him there was NO mods what so ever so maybe he did something after but i dont think he did he was all about keeping it stock

  • Hey there, im the guy he got the amp off of, the original logo was gone when i bought it so i got the closest one i could find with the intentions of finding an original, all i can say is good luck, but yes the amp has never been modded not by me and i had it for years.

  • any mods man? what are your settings on the amp?

  • are there any mods on this thing or are you using a distortion pedal or what?

  • I love these so much.I must buy one! Forget the jcm series the JMP"s rule!

  • Dude I have a 50w JMP 2204 for sale, the same as this one, from 1979, no mods in great condition. Let me know if your interested - I'm from Gwent (UK) so if you live anywhere near you can come up and check it out. I'm asking for £500 obo.

    Cheers.

  • Ignore that now, the amp has SOLD!!!!! :)

  • Could you say the dimensions of your amphead? Would it fit to a 1922 type cab?

  • This sounds very much like my amp. I have a 50w 2204 from 1979!!!

  • nice sound BUT. the logo is not correct for the year you state. JMP heads use a 9" logo, not the 6 yours has. I wonder if that amp box isn't original. Why would that amp have an incorrect logo? Why would you put an older logo on a near classic amp? You would have to drill new pin holes for the logo.

I'm thinking this amp is heaviily modded too.

    I have a 78 JMP 2203. The look isn't consistent here.

  • You're right ;) The logo isn't original.

You can't see it on this video but on the headshell there is the outline of the 9" logo. it must have fallen off. I really want to do some work restoring the cosmetics of the head.

Other than that, it's completely stock.

  • This is a lot better than that cheap Line 6 crap or Crate. Marshall, Mesa or Ampeg is what you need!

  • you can say that again

  • i have the same head! I'm selling it cause i need Hiwatt or Orange! Mine is 50w master volume, made in 1979!

  • DON"T DO IT....the 2204 JMP 50w is a KILLER amp!!!

  • what is a good practice tube amp?

  • i think the line 6 amps sound HORRIBLE!!! they are really nasty and not well articulated, if you want a good practice tube amp get a tiny terror!!! you can get them for 400 used and get a little 1x12 cab and you have a sick practice amp that you can out over a 2x12 or 4x12 and gig with good luck

  • For a practice amp, you can never go wrong with a good 'ol Epiphone Valve Junior. Even the new Fender Champ models sound great.

  • I'd take a marshall jtm 30 loaded with 6l6s any day over a tiny terror lol. YOu ever try the night train by vox? That little thing has balls.

  • is that a 1960b?

  • I love that tone, I found a 1978 JMP MKII master volume 100 watt for sale.

Do you know if that would be a 2203 too, like yours?

    thanks

  • yes it would be just like his, they're amazing amps, just before marshall started being idiots and screwing with digital stuff.

  • great playing, man! that amp kicks ass!

  • nice tone man! is that a master volume model? the 2203 is the 100 watt right? btw good playin too,

  • yep, it's a 100w MV, I have the same amp

  • Nice tone man!

  • Sounds good mate. Can I ask what the volume and preamp were set at?

  • i like your pentatonic style

  • thanks, its more based on the blues scale though. Normall i play a combination of aeolian, ionian and blues scale (which is the penta but with an additional note between the 3rd and the 4th). Its not quite penta, but i like to play simply.

  • hey, thanks for the comments. I'll post another one as soon as i can but that might be a little while still.

Funny how you call it VH noodling, i've never really listened to him. I've been more of a Slash/Angus Young player.

I'm playing a Gibson 61'RI (gibson 57's) and a Fulltone OCD. Thats it

  • he only says it cos of the tone mate. (not meant ofensivly :D)

  • Marshalls rule! Nice tone man. What pick ups,Pedals? Thanks, E

  • MORE clips!!! I want to hear some Van Halen noodling

  • Great amp! Could you play it without effects in another video??? I suggest you something by AC/DC ;)
