Ive but a 4.3 as well and all I did was strap the engine to limit vibrations, and those headbolts are throw aways, anytime you take the heads off you have to replace them, sounds good, look at my s-10 clip and check out the sound and throttle response there
actualy gm used to make a series of big 60degree v6s in the 2ton and up truck series. smallest one was 305 then went to 351 403 and up the 478. and had a 612 v8 and a 7oo+ v12. these are where the old gmc blowers used to come off of are these motors
Tim you read into the comment way to far,i know how large it is,it was a general statement of it being alittle v6,as in its not a v8.I dont own any obnoxious pick em up trucks.
not bad for a little v6? whats little about this motor. if your talking just in terms of six cylinders this is one of the largest available. or is anything smaller than the 454 in your obnoxious pick-em-up truck considered small?
How much power are you getting out of this setup? Thinking about building a race engine with one of these. The vortec heads on a 4.3 are same valves and what not as the 5.7 vortec? right? Along with the 64cc chambers.
madtownmadman: actually they do share the same bore and stroke dimensions, but the crank is not a common pin crank like a 350 is. the connecting rod is different. It takes either a special crank to use a traditional 350 rod and piston combo or using one of the odd fire crankshafts from earlier chevy's.
this is all i did to my 4.3 9:5.1 compression using silvalite hyperutectic pistons,260 hr comp cam. comp roller rockers and springs as well. edelbrock performer 4.3 intake manifold,gibson headers,aluminum pulleys. I also bought a tbi spacer but have not put it on yet. bored .40 over too. I have noticed a big diff in engine performance. FAST at least alot more than it was. I have not dynoed yet but i think im geting arround 270hp give or take a few compared the the 180 hp it was.
@weewoodeal I think they are ok. I just hated the stock manifolds with donut gaskets that always blow out.I got the stainless and they are doing just fine. I i dont think im getting 270hp like i originaly though. Its probably more like 230-250 hp but still have not dynoed. Also i have encountered a slight head leak on both heads. I m not messn with it until i find another truck to swap motor in though,
@weewoodeal If your going to buy headers buy Gibson shorties you wont regret it trust me. They have a built in donut gasket and mine havent leaked anywhere yet. Deffinetly worth the money.
@monsterman27 >----> I have a 96' S-10 Super Sport with the 4.3 Vortec motor. and i've souped it up some. One thing that you should install is an MSD ingintion system like I did. It added 8 horsepower and 12 pounds of torque on the dyno. It even got rid of the annoying dead spot in from idle to 3,000. The 0-60, and 1/4 mile times have also picked up by about 1 full second(GTech Pro Meter). So here's my MSD setup > The Blaster 2 coil, The 6AL2(Digital) Ignition Box, and MSD's 8.5 MM Plug Wres.
@extremedrivr i did use msd ignition and 8.5mm wires..But having issues with motor now. I reused my old headbolts in rebuild and i guess your not supposed too because they stretch so now i have slight head gasket leaks. Also on my rebuild i used Napa replacement motor mounts and i think they are out of spec. I think they are shorter than they were supposed to be or something. Ive had a vibraton since the rebuild and on my passenger side my header is touching the damn frame.
A 4.3 is quite literally a 350 minus two cylinders. They share the same 4" bore, and 3.48" stroke. They also have the same 5.7" connecting rod. Being that the aftermarket for the 4.3 is limited, as compared to the 350, I would think that the easiest way to get that much compression, would be to use some pistons for a 350. Be it flat tops, dome, or whatever would be necessary. 11:1 is a lot of comp. and 4.3's only have about 9:1 compression.
nah that aint bad, i was gana do that to my first chevy s10 i had, was gana put a 4.3 v6 and have a 4bbl on it with a comp cam, but decided to put a 305, stroked 327 in instead, but thats the first time i ever heard a 4.3 run with a 4bbl

@TimPelke182 I believe its the second biggest 6 cylinder made the past 30+ yrs only to Fords 4.9 300I6 bigger then Fords 3.4 and 3.9 V8.

@watso64 >----> Technically! The 4.3 Chevy V-6 is bigger because its a 350 Chevy V-8 minus 2 cylinders.

sounds good. What kind of cam is that?

that doesnt sound too bad. I upped my compression to 9.5:1 worried i would have to by the more expensive gas

Did you use 350 pistons to get 11:1 compression? How much did you have to mill the heads? It still runs on pump gas? Nice setup.

what do you mean by "350 pistons"?
