Open G can be that (D G D G B D) tuning. I play that way in this song, although I am likely a semi-tone lower.
I now play the song (G G D G B D). If you play it that way you'll notice how true it is when you move the notes up the neck with the 6th string playing open G and the note on the 5th moving up the neck.
If you drop the 1st string down to a B it sounds truer to the recording.
Well done bro, I fingered this one out when I was first learning to play. I loved the song so much that It was literally one of the first five songs that I ever learned. This old hippie showed me the tuning but not the song, he told me that I had to feel it and he was right, I did. I was pissed that he didn't just teach me the chords but if he had then I would have learned nothing. Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach him how to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.
Very welcome to have a listen to AirwavesJoxfields Vegetable (Elephant ) Man with Joxfields tribute-to-David-Gilmour's-ca-1971-playing guitar at 1.59. If you make a visit; hope you enjoy it! Cheers!
Ok so your ideo has been a blessing. I just need a little help with that bridge.. Cn you tell me the notes you are playing to achieve this? I've tried to pick it out but I'm missing something.
@mfwilli you're right it's a superb version that has the difficult to define essence but he really does capture it. Loved the version of The Kinks 'Big Sky' too done by the same artist.
Thank you... I really enjoyed your version. The guitar was damn near note for note and th vocals were ver nice. You kept it simple yet made it your own. As Floydian, I thank you or the show. My 10 year old is going to love this.
This is an awesome post on YouTube. This is the best cover of this song that I have ever seen in my life. You take no shortcuts and deliver this song in a manner that gives me goosebumps! The presentation, the acoustics and the action displayed with the guitar have certainly inspired me to at least try and duplicate your work. You make it look easy and I know for a fact that it is not. What untapped talent? Thank you so much! -Chris
I have to say after years of procrastinating to learn guitar your playing in this song has inspired me to try to learn this song. Your other songs are indeed excellent. We seem to have the same musical tastes" the gunners dream" and "south hamptom docks" were the other song i always wanted to learn. Thank you so much for being so talented and inspiring people to play. Btw this is the first comment I have ever made on youtube. Never felt like anything was worth it.
For Those interested in the correct tuning - A quote from Roger Waters: "What's interesting about it, for me, is that it's interesting musically: (hums riff). Funnily enough, that was a tuning that Syd showed me. It's a really beautiful open G tuning, for anybody who wants to tune their guitar: G-G-D-G-B-B."
I do essentially the same thing, but my voice is lower so open C instead of G. The figure you play B-C-D-E-F#-G has a dominant feel in your version, with low G underneath, tonic in open C.
Well done! I have a question about how you play the intro after you strum the open G to start the whole song. It looks like you play a note with your middle finger on the 2nd string. Do you play two notes on that string before going to the 5th? Sorry if too confusing but I'm trying to get this song down pat and watching your video has been a big help, thanks.
If you are taking about after the harmonic strum on the 12th fret, the climb up is the 2 fingers on the 5th and 3rd string 4,5,7,9,11,12 frets. Others play it differently likely the same notes but an octave higher. Both correct I think, however I'm in G flat.
Really nice. By the way, what kind of mic are you using? I have a shitty webcam and the mic sucks. I'm wondering if I plug in a separate mic, will it over ride the webcam mic.
Thanks. I'm using the mic from the camera, mono, nothing else. The camera is a Casio Exilim 8.1 Mega pixels. I paid $250 last year for it. I move it around to get the best balance of voice and guitar. If the singing is low, like "Have a drink on me", I have the camera mounted on a tripod with bendable legs I can wrap around the neck of the guitar. I cut the video with Avidemux software which is freeware.
Thanks. It's a Washburn, with 6 strings amputated. "Meddle" is a great album. I eventually want to learn "San Tropez". Don't know if that'll work out. Maybe "Echoes"!
glad to hear i cover of the greatest band ever

If there's an offer out there by the good people at Campbells let me know.
Your profile would suggest that you need a lot of instructions on what should come naturally.
If you ever have both hands free pick up a guitar and tune back if you want to learn.
