I too have done it many times! When I got married, I played a song for my new wife during the ceremony. I taped a piece of paper with the lyrics on the side of my guitar so I could look down and cheat. About half way through the song, I looked down at the words, but the lapel of my jacket was covering part of the paper...Not Good! I had to make up a few words real quick and the only people who knew were my wife and me as she knew how the song was suppose to go. Another duh moment!
How funny! He's probably thinking, "DOH!!!" Dan, wherever you are, don't sweat it! It happens to all us musicians! I know I've done it before, in the middle of music juries, no less! Just skipped a line of music in my flute piece, found a random measure and went on like nothing had happened, even though my accompanist was going, "Where did she go?" We just cracked up laughing later!
Or, like a friend of mine, who was playing a big, huge Mozart piece on her flute when the music stand she was using dumped all her sheet music on the floor! She tried to go on like nothing had happened, play it from memory, but she couldn't. She had to stop and pick it up and she had it in order--so she thought--and started playing again and when she came to the next page, she found, suddenly, that all of her sheet music was placed in random order!
I once heard Dan flub this song, but the last verse--repeated a line twice (and didn't include the one that was first)...wasn't (quite) as obvious as this; he just rolled on more like nothing happened--and few probably even noticed. Also, there's a lyric goof on his "Live" single CD - on Crow. It's pretty minor to all but the "perfectionist listener." Saw some twenty-plus great concerts over the years 75-03 - agree, pretty rare for him. Yes, just made him all the more human.
Every performers nightmare, but loved the way Dan pulled out of it!! He started off just great!!--Wonder what he was thinking to get offtrack, cuz he sure sang this song like a gazillion times!!!LOL!!! Guess he WAS human!!!
He was probably on autopilot--like when you drive to work then wonder how you got there!! LOL!!!!!
OMG! Dan just had a mental pause! It wasn't the first time, and I really doubt it was the last!I loved the way he tempered the situation with humor and moved on. What else can you do?
Very precious moments in time. This is the way I will always remember him, solo with his guitars!
Absolutely priceless....!! His honesty is quite funny and heartwarming to watch, but in his heart (as a true perfectionist) you could see at the end, I don't think he was best pleased with himself. Bless him...
Love this! The lyric mishap makes this such a precious clip. So funny....and his humor and charm so endearing. Thanks for sharing this, Tim. And I extend my sincere thanks to the fan who captured this show. Great camera work - just Dan and his guitar.

She tried to keep playing and her accompanist was like, "WTH???" She started cracking up laughing and they had to start over!

Aww, poor Dan!! I feel for him, he gets all fidgety on his chair, trying to remember the words!!
Doesn't matter to me, he can just sit there and smile and strum, with his long hair blowing in the wind, and I'm happy.

Haven't we all had one of those moments! How funny! But leave it to Dan to handle it in his inimitable way! Lord, how I miss him! Thank you, Tim.
