Why does the suffering of other beings move us so? The struggle of a drowning insect, or the tears of a bereaved mother? Why should we care, since it's 'not us'?

I feel that it's because someplace, sometime, in this long wandering of Samsara, we have been that drowning insect, we have been that grieving mother; and so our hearts are no stranger to the pain we see around us, and vibrate in understanding sympathy.

Evolution has selected this over shoot altruistic behavior in us and that is why we feel pain when we see a drowning insect or being. Also, from that we have been taught to put ourselves in the situation of another suffering being and wonder how we would feel in such a situation.

Being moved with attachment to other beings is good practice but the ultimate goal is to let go of all attachment at this point in time to eliminate suffering at this point in time.

Buddhism is not trying to answer y we are here (you can make up what ever reason you see fit). It answers the ultimate question of suffering (feeling of unsatisfactoriness caused by the continuous pursuit of happiness in vain) here and now (4 noble truths). Other questions like, is there a creator, is there a soul, or is the universe finite, are not relevant. So you can be a Muslim and still practice the elimination of suffering here and now.
