  • Andy wasn't singing to an old girlfriend. She was an out-of-town relative of a close friend of Aunt Bee's.She had a fight with her boyfriend & was staying with them for a week .

  • Its too bad there arent mainstream shows like this anymore, What a beautiful song.

  • This isn't an old girlfriend of Andy's it's a distant friend, who once again Helen is jealous of.

  • Any one know where i can find guitar tabs for this version of the song

  • Buetiful. I love all versions of this song.

  • oh how I wish he would've sang this whole song

  • You know when I was a young kid we used to sit out on my grandparent's front yard after a big dinner, close to dusk and play/pick a song just like this.Sometimes as a kid I used to get bored just sitting there doing what I saw as nothing. Now as an adult almost forty living a fast paced life I spend a lot of time wishing I could go back to doing that!

  • It just dont get no better than this! I just wish Andy would have sang all the verses! But I know TV has time limits.

  • Was he really thinking about charlene at this time?

  • It is humanly impossible to dislike this.

  • Dose ayone know if AndyGrffith ever put his version on one of his albums? I like both versions a lot. I only wish J. D. sumner athe stamps pr the Oak Ridge Boys didthi song. Iould like to hear The oaks do it now in a slow and deeper voice.

  • she was not an old girlfriend, just a family friend!

  • @TheRWBProductions yeah not his girlfriend but not really his cousin either, just a friend. Aunt Bea says earlier they are 'like' cousins because herself and the girls mother were so close.

  • Hey, does anyone know where I can get the audio version of charlene singing this song? Charlene from the Darlings

  • Let's face it, Andy Griffith was hot.

  • good actress..her face during that song ...:'(

  • He use to teach music class and setup the music system that is still in effect today in I believe Georgia. Could you imagine being in those music classes. man it must of been something.

  • What episode is this from??

  • Beautiful, glad to have this and the Darlings version in my favorites.

  • Just had to have it in my playlist....check the one with the Darlings, the lead singer will send chills up and down your spine for sure......

  • This is from Season 5 episode 24 "Guest in the House" and I find it so very haunting. I wish he had sung the whole song.

  • i like the darlings version as well as andy's. andy's take on this song is a first cousin of ernie ford's version of wayfaring stranger.

  • This song makes me want to cry and smile at the same time....

  • ANdy has such a pretty whistle!!!

  • This song is so much more haunting when its slow

  • Of course the Dillards' version is beautiful but this is simply another take on it. Where theirs was intense and full of spirit, this one is slower, more thoughtful--Charlene was singing as a younger generation, Andy seems to sing it from the point of view of someone older and wiser and full of sorrow. Majestic. I'm proud he's in my family.

  • I like the version that is literally by the Dillards, it is amazing.

  • The Darlings version is good, but this one is particularly haunting...

  • He is not singing to an old girl friend. She is "like a cousin" but not actually family. She's an old family friend.

  • He seems like he's hamming it up after I just listened to the Darling's version of it.

  • Thank goodness for reruns...and you tube.

  • Loved it when the Dillards did the song on the show. So beautiful.

  • Does anyone know of any bands or artists who've recorded this song in this style, or something similarly downtempo? I've found plenty of recorded versions of this song, but they all seem to mimic the Darlings'/Dillards' version, and are much faster than this.

  • @splinteredlight There are many different versions of this available on iTunes store. You might like Uncle Earl and Sugarcane Jane's versions. Personally, I like The Ball Sisters Band version.

  • I much prefer Charlene Darling and the Darlings' version of it.

  • @msymsed mee too its the best version i ever heard

  • @msymsed same here

  • I have always loved the episodes when Andy sings and plays guitar. His singing voice has a very natural, sincere quality. TAGS is my favorite tv show of all time.

  • anyone have the tabs or somethin 4 this?

  • I don't even remember hearing Andy sing this. Just Charlene. I love it when he whistles!

  • @gingercady007 me neither

  • one of the best episodes...mainly because this song played throughout. I actually like the whistling better than the Darlings playing it.

  • He did a good job on this but i think Aunt Bea got after him for it later on. She thought he was leading that girl on.

  • What a beautiful and memorable tune.

  • Oh and I forgot, that is not an old girlfriend, it is just aunt bee's friend that lives far away

  • I wish I could whistle that good!

  • great song he goes a wonderful job but dang it i still like the darling version better

  • i agree (and i LOVE andy's voice), but when i first heard it when charlene darling sang it, it stayed with me...what a 'haunting', but beautiful song. you just can't get enough of it!

  • What a beautiful, haunting rendition of this song.

  • He has such a rich voice...love this!

And his whistling is good too...:P

  • @lotsandlotsofbubbles just great

  • Just wonderful

  • great quality!! thanx for uploading
