Andy wasn't singing to an old girlfriend. She was an out-of-town relative of a close friend of Aunt Bee's.She had a fight with her boyfriend & was staying with them for a week .
You know when I was a young kid we used to sit out on my grandparent's front yard after a big dinner, close to dusk and play/pick a song just like this.Sometimes as a kid I used to get bored just sitting there doing what I saw as nothing. Now as an adult almost forty living a fast paced life I spend a lot of time wishing I could go back to doing that!
Dose ayone know if AndyGrffith ever put his version on one of his albums? I like both versions a lot. I only wish J. D. sumner athe stamps pr the Oak Ridge Boys didthi song. Iould like to hear The oaks do it now in a slow and deeper voice.
@TheRWBProductions yeah not his girlfriend but not really his cousin either, just a friend. Aunt Bea says earlier they are 'like' cousins because herself and the girls mother were so close.
He use to teach music class and setup the music system that is still in effect today in I believe Georgia. Could you imagine being in those music classes. man it must of been something.
Of course the Dillards' version is beautiful but this is simply another take on it. Where theirs was intense and full of spirit, this one is slower, more thoughtful--Charlene was singing as a younger generation, Andy seems to sing it from the point of view of someone older and wiser and full of sorrow. Majestic. I'm proud he's in my family.
Does anyone know of any bands or artists who've recorded this song in this style, or something similarly downtempo? I've found plenty of recorded versions of this song, but they all seem to mimic the Darlings'/Dillards' version, and are much faster than this.
@splinteredlight There are many different versions of this available on iTunes store. You might like Uncle Earl and Sugarcane Jane's versions. Personally, I like The Ball Sisters Band version.
I have always loved the episodes when Andy sings and plays guitar. His singing voice has a very natural, sincere quality. TAGS is my favorite tv show of all time.
i agree (and i LOVE andy's voice), but when i first heard it when charlene darling sang it, it stayed with me...what a 'haunting', but beautiful song. you just can't get enough of it!

This isn't an old girlfriend of Andy's it's a distant friend, who once again Helen is jealous of.

This is from Season 5 episode 24 "Guest in the House" and I find it so very haunting. I wish he had sung the whole song.

i like the darlings version as well as andy's. andy's take on this song is a first cousin of ernie ford's version of wayfaring stranger.

The Darlings version is good, but this one is particularly haunting...

He is not singing to an old girl friend. She is "like a cousin" but not actually family. She's an old family friend.

He seems like he's hamming it up after I just listened to the Darling's version of it.

one of the best episodes...mainly because this song played throughout. I actually like the whistling better than the Darlings playing it.
