The best thing the automotive market has experienced is the removal of this subpar "sports' car from the market. I actually feel sorry for the few that I see driving one. Makes me assume how stupid and ignorant they were when purchasing a solstice.
Maybe you should feel sorry for yourself because your clueless. Name me another car that came out that year that had 290hp and 340lb feet of torque avaliable with a factory upgrade option, all while weighing under 3000 lbs. The car has perfect 50/50 weight distribution and has won the T2 class at scca several times. You are really clueless and must know nothing about sports cars or cars in general. Provide some backup after spewing non-sense.
Hey Dan, how do you think this GM engine stacks up against Hyundai's upcoming 2.0T four cylinder turbocharged engine (274 hp & 269 lb-ft of torque) for the Sonata? I hear that engine is supposed to get as much as 34 mpg highway.
Is GM planning on using this engine in any of their divisions still?
@nicedreams666 , You, little man, need to drive a few more cars, and I don't mean that american made junk. I'm sure you've never even driven a high performance Japanese sports car such as a Corolla XRS, or Civic Si, so before you go spouting off about those boat anchor american V8s, you need to gain a few years experience in life. Also, when I wrote, "Corolla XRS was just as fast, without the Toyota reliability", I mean the Cum-ara as not have the Toyota reliability. All Toyotas are reliable.
@Tophairybutt I've seen several of your comments, and I really think you need to drive a few more cars before offering your opinion. For one, a Corolla is no where near as fast as this, not even the XRS. And another thing, on the Camaro SS vid, you said that a "Corolla XRS was just as fast, without the toyota reliablity." Are you kidding me? Do you even know just how reliable GM LS engines are?
The Stage II GMPP tune does increase it to 22psi direct injection, creating 290hp and 340 ft lbs torque for $650 dealer installed. It's also a learning tune, so adding a low restriction cat back will get you in the 300's for hp. This setup will handle the 1/4 mile in the 12's on street radials. That's fast!
If you get the dealer installed ECU reflash to up the boost and a new manifold-air-pressure sensor. you can get quite a lot more speed, my friends can get to 60 in 5.6 ish depending on the launch. the ECU reprogramming makes the torque curve flatter than a pool table.
290 HP 325 lb/f with the added options all for about a grand
Yeah I mean it's quick compared to all the economy cars on the road, but when you bring it into the class of roadsters, pony cars and etc; this is not as fast as it should be.
Actually, I scratch my comment. The car IS fast. It's a quick 4 banger and even compared this launch vid to the V6 Camaro. It beats the Camaro. Plus the mileage is great in the Solstice.
@WretchedDrake Actually the car makes the v6 camarao feel stupid slow. Its night and day. The solstice is 850 lbs lighter and full torque comes on at only 2000 rpm. From a launch a solstice gxp feels like a dump truck hit you from behind and a v6 camaro feels and is about as quick as a v6 camry
@g4ebguy , well at the time i made that comment i was driving an E320, but my current CLK550 absolutely demolishes this thing so maybe it's not so fast lol
@g4ebguy Um yeah it only has a better power to weight ratio then a porsche boxter, perfect 50/50 weight distribution, near 1g handling with decent tires and winning the t2 scca championship, its the cefinition of a sports car.
@Tireburner7 , your comments on the handling of this car are totally irrelevant considering my comments were made on an [acceleration] video. (FYI: you dont need to be a sports car to have impressive acceleration).
I know this car is obviously a definitive sports car, and I wouldnt dare compare a grand tourer to it in regards to handling prowess and track performance. Different cars for different purposes. Good thing about acceleration is any type of car can go fast in a straight line
Where exactly does you clk demolish this thing? With a factory option this car puts out clost to 350 lb feet of torque at 2000rpm, all while weighing only 2900 lbs, thats like putting an extra 6-7 into the solstice to make it equal in weight to a clk550. Throw in close to 1g handling with decent pair or tires, 50/50 weight distribution, the solstice runs with much quicker cars that a clk550. the clk550 is a nice tourer but dont compare it to a sports car that won the scca t2 class.
@Tireburner7 , it's pretty obvious where exactly my 550 demolishes this thing. In case you havent noticed, this is a 0-60 acceleration video; not a circuit track lap trial. This car is clearly not that quick. Im finding road test data confirming 1/4 mile times in the upper 13s- lower 14s. CLK550's are about a full second quicker. I looked into that factory turbo you mentioned, and while 340 ft-lb is excellent, 290 hp isnt. Even weighing only 2900 lbs it wont be enough to pull well in the top end
Finally had a chance to drag a clk550. Beautifull exhaust note. Easily took him to 70, one and a half car legnth ahead. 70-90 he cought up and would have walked me from 90-top speed. -(tireburner7 other account)
@medicalrecordsinc , wow im shocked you held on to a clk550 for that long. Did your Solstice GXP have that factory turbo option you had mentioned? Not surprised he would have walked you at triple digit speeds. The hp output in the top end is just not a fair comparison b/t these two cars.
wow 16 pounds of boost stock thats high for a stock car. I have not seen any solstice coupes on the road at all. I used to see tones of the convertables to but not any more same thing goes for the sky. its like no one drives them any more.
Yeah these new 2.0l turbos are legit. I have the same engine in my hhr ss and I peak 17lbs of boost and hold 13-14, so average would be about 15psi. Almost zero turbo lag too! I've done 0-60 in 5.58 seconds and its bone stock!
yea I have seen a saturn sky up close. the turbo in them is so small so I guess it does not take much to make them spin. the hhr ss is a nice little truck to they look mean in the SS trim.
Yeah they are tiny but efficient! I agree I hated, and I mean hated the hhr until the day I bought my SS. I didn't even know the SS existed until I saw the one I bought. Crazy Chevy!
next time can you record above the dashboard too, to see how fast you really are going? would be sweet! just do it on some country road or something if you're worried
Camera placement can be a real trick. Keeping the undisclosed location undisclosed is paramount ... at least until we can luck into that abandoned airstrip ... :)
yah right bro. My friend has a 2000 Si with headers, hi flo cats, catback exhaust, tcai... has the works.
We have raced over 15 times in my 2003 toyota tacoma 3.4L headers exhaust tcai and I BURN HIM. The only race he has beat me is when we went past 90. SOrry bro, this car will smoke the Si. LOL.
these engines are what america should have been making a long time ago. instead we got regurgitated garbage from the 70s for the last 30 some years because bonehead ceos are trying to milk ancient technology for every penny.
Ford is going to have 3 electric vehicles by 2012, and they are already putting "ecoboost" engines into vehicles which are direct injection twin trubo v6s, currently they only have a 3.5l ecoboost which puts out 355-365 hp, but they will have smaller 1.4l i4 ecoboost engines in the future.
The reason way the Camaro, Mustang, and Challenger are so heavy is because they are all based off of four-door sedans. The Corvette has it's own platform.
And the mustang is based off of what 4 door sedan? The mustang isn't really that heavy, lighter than alot of sedans and that is why it is fast with it's small engine.
Pontiac's website rates the Solstice GXP at 5.5 seconds 0-60, but it's unclear whether that's for just for the manual. If I had enough time (on a closed course!) to work on my launch, I'd get closer to that.
While the automatic was a disappointment from a driver's perspective, it did quite well in our fuel economy testing.
If you ask me, Americans have it all wrong, the cars are way too big and heavy. Power, maybe but you don't need power to go fast, you need lightness and agility. There is a UK based car that has a 2.0 litre engine and does 0-60 in 2.88 seconds and when driven sensibly, 40 MPG. Don't get me wrong, there are cars here that do 80 to 100 MPG (my old car did 82.2 MPG!) but they don't specialize in speed! Another thing American cars tend to lack is economy. What are the economy figures for this car?
What UK car hits those crazy (2.88 0-60/40 MPG) numbers? The closest thing I can think of is the Toyota-engined Lotus Elise ... super fun (and light) car, but hardly practical. :) I've driven one, if ever so briefly. It was a blast!
I don't have the fuel economy numbers for the Solstice GXP at hand, but I can tell you that it's far under-rated for the highway segment when driven with a light foot. This engine is much more European than anything else in the lineup.
Yeah the Caterham R500 superlight, like Lotus. Often light powerful cars are also economical as they're so light they need so little power to get them going. There are Lotus' that do 0-60 in 4 seconds and still 50 MPG. Diesels tend to get superb economy ratings here although small petrol turbocharged engines are becoming more popular (hence economy/performance) In America though they test for N0X not C02 like in Europe, but diesels should emit a lot less either way otherwise there's no point!
what 2.0 liter turbo engine is that? cuz whatever it is, its not factory. And its pointless to argue a modded engine against a stock one.
And the ZR1 weighs only 3200lbs 638bhp supercharged V8...0-60 in 3.4 secs...and still gets 24mpg! BMW's hardly get 25mpg tops, same for most benz's and most jap performance cars.
The reason cars like the Camaro, mustang and Challenger are so heavy is b/c they have the muscle car heritage...huge torquie engine, heavy body, straight line beasts.
FWIW, the BMW diesels do quite well when it comes to both fuel economy and performance. The 335d I tested is rated at 6.0 seconds 0-60. I was able to wring highway mileage in the mid-40s out of it. Remarkable engine.
sorry but you are incorrect once again. This car, in 5th gear, doing 60 mph can get around around 40 if driven to save fuel. What mass produced car in in the U.K, that you can use everyday, has a trunk and is a real car (not a kit car) and cost around 24 USD now?
Some one from GM was quoted as saying that their drivers could easily achieve 5.2 seconds for the manual, but they wanted journalist to be able to easily achieve the advertised 5.5 seconds. The auto can do it in 5.2 in anyones hands. The car is faster than the 0-60 suggest becuase 3 shifts must be made to get to sixty, so each gear pulls like a freight train.
he's talkin about the EVO FQ400 or 500. Those egines use a very high boost level and considerably high compression for a force inducted engine too. But it also get less gas milage than the new CTS-V and costs just as much lol. Id say get the CTS-V and have the luxury and performance of a supercharged LS9 V8 rather than a laggy 4 cylinder that wont reach boost till 3000rpm
Yep! This engine is too good to let go. It'll end up in a bunch of places, I reckon. The buzz is that Fisker will be using it as a generator in the Karma ... not sure why they'd need a turbo for that. =)
It's too small for the Camaro, but it might be nifty for the Cruze or the Spark. Would've been fun to have it in the Astra ...
yeah I heard that rumor alsoI think on an autoblog podcast, and was also perplexed as to the need of a turbo for a 'range extender' type situation. I think a small four popper sans turbo would suffice!!

We need clean diesels ...

The Caterham's a hoot. Would never pass crash testing, tho.
GM's 2.0L turbo is a screaming little engine ... about the same HP as the Ford Duratec in the Caterham, but with loads more torque.
Put that engine into an aerodynamic & light weight roller with the right transmission and it could easily see 40 MPG (US) highway.

what 2.0 liter turbo engine is that? cuz whatever it is, its not factory.

Remarkable engine.

i was talking about gas engines, not desiels. obviously desiels are gonna get better than 25mpg.

Of course! :)

and there still slow
the mustung engine in parts looks like it build out of stone

sorry but you are incorrect once again. This car, in 5th gear, doing 60 mph can get around around 40 if driven to save fuel. What mass produced car in in the U.K, that you can use everyday, has a trunk and is a real car (not a kit car) and cost around 24 USD now?

Hundreds: Ford Focus 1.6 Diesel 65 MPG
VW Passat/Golf/Bora etc TDI 55 MPG Fiat Bravo 2.0 Multijet does 0-60 in 8 secs and 65 MPG. New Volvo C30 E-drive does 83 MPG!
There are economical cars from all manufactures that can do between 50 and 80 MPG.

Really? What Japanese mass produced 2.0 makes 500 hp?
Tireburner7 2 years ago
EVO and 0-60 in 3.5 secs
D41H4T5U 2 years ago
he's talkin about the EVO FQ400 or 500. Those egines use a very high boost level and considerably high compression for a force inducted engine too. But it also get less gas milage than the new CTS-V and costs just as much lol. Id say get the CTS-V and have the luxury and performance of a supercharged LS9 V8 rather than a laggy 4 cylinder that wont reach boost till 3000rpm

not 2.0 litr does 500 bhp unless you tune it up
i bet you 1.4 does 0-60 in 7.8
i bet you going tell me its got 300 bhp next
cranding 2 years ago
EVO FQ has 500 BHP as does the old Cossworths from the 90's, 500 BHP from a 2.0 litre.
My car only has 135 BHP but there are people who have tuned them close to 300 BHP, FROM A 1.4 LITRE!

The Nissan Skyline GTR makes at least 400HP and I think its a 2.0L.

due to saturn and pontiacs situation, and the cobalt ss w/ same mill, I hope this will live on in the Cruze' :(

Would've been fun to have it in the Astra ...
mpgomatic 2 years ago
yeah I heard that rumor alsoI think on an autoblog podcast, and was also perplexed as to the need of a turbo for a 'range extender' type situation. I think a small four popper sans turbo would suffice!!

Saturn has this same car rebadged the "Sky". I love the shifting and the engine didn't show an ounce of struggling! Awesome car!
