Yeah everything is really swell. But when people start talking about diesel backup generators, and having them fail...it is AMAZING to me how stupid this system is. Caveman technology. Like a chimpanzee flying an airplane.
uranium-graphite (Chernobyl) - when coolant is lost chain-reaction grows & becomes unstable - positive void coefficient.
light water vs heavy water is simplistically dealing with slowing neutrons but to maintain a reaction,so heavy water does not have as much of a "starving effect" to keep a reaction going.
a lightwater reactor cannot produce a Chernobyl affect, Chernobyl was a graphite moderator and Japans well most of the worlds is light water. so when Chernobyl overheated and from VERY poor design, NO containment, the graphite caught fire and vented out and contaminated the surrounding areas. A Moderator is what keeps the reaction going, preventing from shut down so to speak. In lightwater, the effect is steam vented, this is what is happening in Japan, steam venting from the heated fuel.

well now there is a 3rd explosion if it damaged the containment at the bottom, that is not good which is designed to hold the melted fuel.

oops I forgot to add that our reactors, light & heavy water create a negative void coefficient meaning when coolant is lost the reaction shuts down.
